1 Digo porém que, enquanto o herdeiro é menor de idade, em nada difere de um escravo, embora seja dono de tudo.2 No entanto, ele está sujeito a guardiães e administradores até o tempo determinado por seu pai.3 Assim também nós, quando éramos menores, estávamos escravizados aos princípios elementares do mundo.4 Mas, quando chegou a plenitude do tempo, Deus enviou seu Filho, nascido de mulher, nascido debaixo da lei,5 a fim de redimir os que estavam sob a lei, para que recebêssemos a adoção de filhos.6 E, porque vocês são filhos, Deus enviou o Espírito de seu Filho aos seus corações, o qual clama: "Aba, Pai".7 Assim, você já não é mais escravo, mas filho; e, por ser filho, Deus também o tornou herdeiro.8 Antes, quando vocês não conheciam a Deus, eram escravos daqueles que, por natureza, não são deuses.9 Mas agora, conhecendo a Deus, ou melhor, sendo por ele conhecidos, como é que estão voltando àqueles mesmos princípios elementares, fracos e sem poder? Querem ser escravizados por eles outra vez?10 Vocês estão observando dias especiais, meses, ocasiões específicas e anos!11 Temo que os meus esforços por vocês tenham sido inúteis.12 Eu lhes suplico, irmãos, que se tornem como eu, pois eu me tornei como vocês. Em nada vocês me ofenderam;13 como sabem, foi por causa de uma doença que lhes preguei o evangelho pela primeira vez.14 Embora a minha doença lhes tenha sido uma provação, vocês não me trataram com desprezo ou desdém; pelo contrário, receberam-me como se eu fosse um anjo de Deus, como o próprio Cristo Jesus.15 Que aconteceu com a alegria de vocês? Tenho certeza que, se fosse possível, vocês teriam arrancado os próprios olhos para dá-los a mim.16 Tornei-me inimigo de vocês por lhes dizer a verdade?17 Os que fazem tanto esforço para agradá-los, não agem bem, mas querem isolá-los a fim de que vocês também mostrem zelo por eles.18 É bom sempre ser zeloso pelo bem, e não apenas quando estou presente.19 Meus filhos, novamente estou sofrendo dores de parto por sua causa, até que Cristo seja formado em vocês.20 Eu gostaria de estar com vocês agora e mudar o meu tom de voz, pois estou perplexo quanto a vocês.21 Digam-me vocês, os que querem estar debaixo da lei: Acaso vocês não ouvem a lei?22 Pois está escrito que Abraão teve dois filhos, um da escrava e outro da livre.23 O filho da escrava nasceu de modo natural, mas o filho da livre nasceu mediante promessa.24 Isso é usado aqui como uma ilustração; estas mulheres representam duas alianças. Uma aliança procede do monte Sinai e gera filhos para a escravidão: esta é Hagar.25 Hagar representa o monte Sinai, na Arábia, e corresponde à atual cidade de Jerusalém, que está escravizada com os seus filhos.26 Mas a Jerusalém do alto é livre, e essa é a nossa mãe.27 Pois está escrito: "Regozije-se, ó estéril, você que nunca teve um filho; grite de alegria, você que nunca esteve em trabalho de parto; porque mais são os filhos da mulher abandonada do que os daquela que tem marido".28 Vocês, irmãos, são filhos da promessa, como Isaque.29 Naquele tempo, o filho nascido de modo natural perseguia o filho nascido segundo o Espírito. O mesmo acontece agora.30 Mas o que diz a Escritura? "Mande embora a escrava e o seu filho, porque o filho da escrava jamais será herdeiro com o filho da livre".31 Portanto, irmãos, não somos filhos da escrava, mas da livre.

1 But I say that so long as the heir is a juvenile, he differs nothing from a slave though he is lord of all;2 but is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed of the father.3 So we also, when we were juveniles, were being made slaves under the rudiments of the world:4 but when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,5 that he might redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.6 And because you{+} are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father.7 So that you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.8 Nevertheless at that time, not knowing God, you{+} served as slaves to those that by nature are no gods:9 but now that you{+} have come to know God, and what's more, to be known by God, how do you{+} turn back again to the weak and beggarly rudiments, to which you{+} desire to serve as slaves over again?10 You{+} observe days, and months, and seasons, and years.11 I am afraid of you{+}, lest by any means I have bestowed labor on you{+} for nothing.12 I urge you{+}, brothers, become as I [am], for I also [have become] as you{+} [are]. You{+} did me no wrong:13 but you{+} know that because of an infirmity of the flesh I preached the good news to you{+} the first time:14 and that which was a trial to you{+} in my flesh you{+} did not despise, nor reject; but you{+} received me as an angel of God, [even] as Christ Jesus.15 Where then is that blessedness of yours? For I bear you{+} witness, that, if possible, you{+} would have plucked out your{+} eyes and given them to me.16 So then have I become your{+} enemy, by telling you{+} the truth?17 They zealously seek you{+} in no good way; no, they desire to shut you{+} out, that you{+} may seek them.18 But it is good to be zealously sought in a good matter at all times, and not only when I am present with you{+}.19 My children, of whom I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you{+}--20 but I could wish to be present with you{+} now, and to change my tone; for I am perplexed about you{+}.21 Tell me, you{+} who desire to be under the law, don't you{+} hear the law?22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman, and one by the free woman.23 Nevertheless the [son] by the slave woman is born after the flesh; but the [son] by the free woman [is born] through promise.24 Which things contain an allegory: for these [women] are two covenants; one from mount Sinai, bearing children to slavery, which is Hagar.25 Now this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia and answers to the Jerusalem that now is: for she works as a slave along with her children.26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is our mother.27 For it is written, Rejoice, you barren that do not bear; Break forth and cry, you who do not travail: For more are the children of the desolate than of her who has the husband.28 Now you{+}, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.29 But as then he who was born after the flesh persecuted him [that was born] after the Spirit, so also it is now.30 Nevertheless what does the Scripture say? Cast out the slave woman and her son: for the son of the slave woman will not inherit with the son of the free woman.31 Therefore, brothers, we are not children of a slave woman, but of the free woman.
