1 Quando o Senhor, o seu Deus, tiver destruído as nações cuja terra lhes dá, e quando vocês as expulsarem e ocuparem as cidades e as casas dessas nações,2 separem três cidades de refúgio na parte central da terra que o Senhor, o seu Deus, está dando a vocês para que dela tomem posse.3 Dividam em três partes a terra que o Senhor, o seu Deus, lhe está dando como herança e façam nela acessos, para que aquele que matar alguém possa fugir para lá.4 Este é o caso em que um homem que matar outro poderá fugir para lá para salvar a vida: se matar o seu próximo sem intenção, sem que houvesse inimizade entre eles.5 Por exemplo, se um homem for com o seu amigo cortar lenha na floresta e, ao levantar o machado para derrubar uma árvore, o ferro escapar e atingir o seu amigo e matá-lo, ele poderá fugir para uma daquelas cidades para salvar a vida.6 Do contrário, o vingador da vítima poderia persegui-lo enfurecido e alcançá-lo, caso a distância fosse grande demais, e poderia matá-lo, muito embora este não merecesse morrer, pois não havia inimizade entre ele e o seu próximo.7 É por isso que lhe ordeno que separe três cidades.8 Se o Senhor, o seu Deus, aumentar o seu território, como prometeu sob juramento aos seus antepassados, e lhe der toda a terra que prometeu a eles,9 separem então mais três cidades. Isso acontecerá se vocês obedecerem fielmente a toda esta lei que hoje lhes ordeno: amar o Senhor, o seu Deus, e sempre andar nos seus caminhos.10 Façam isso para que não se derrame sangue inocente na sua terra, a qual o Senhor, o seu Deus, lhes dá por herança, e para que não sejam culpados de derramamento de sangue.11 Mas, se alguém odiar o seu próximo, ficar à espreita dele, atacá-lo e matá-lo, e fugir para uma dessas cidades,12 as autoridades da sua cidade mandarão buscá-lo nas cidade de refúgio, e o entregarão nas mãos do vingador da vítima, para que morra.13 Não tenham piedade dele. Eliminem de Israel a culpa pelo derramamento de sangue inocente, para que tudo lhes vá bem.14 Não mudem os marcos de divisa da propriedade do seu vizinho, que os seus colocaram na herança que receberão na terra que o Senhor, o seu Deus, lhes dá para que dela tomem posse.15 Uma só testemunha não é suficiente para condenar alguém de algum crime ou delito. Qualquer acusação precisa ser confirmada pelo depoimento de duas ou três testemunhas.16 Se uma testemunha falsa quiser acusar um homem de algum crime,17 os dois envolvidos na questão deverão apresentar-se ao Senhor, diante dos sacerdotes e juízes que estiverem exercendo o cargo naquela ocasião.18 Os juízes investigarão o caso e, se ficar provado que a testemunha mentiu e deu falso testemunho contra o seu próximo,19 dêem-lhe a punição que ele planejava para o seu irmão. Eliminem o mal do meio de vocês.20 O restante do povo saberá disso e terá medo, e nunca mais se fará uma coisa dessas entre vocês.21 Não tenham piedade. Exijam vida por vida, olho por olho, dente por dente, mão por mão, pé por pé.

1 When the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;2 Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.3 Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the limits of thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither.4 And this is the case of the slayer, who shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoever killeth his neighbor ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;5 As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbor to hew wood, and his hand maketh a stroke with the ax to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and falleth upon his neighbor, that he dieth: he shall flee to one of these cities, and live:6 Lest the avenger of blood shall pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.7 Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.8 And if the LORD thy God shall enlarge thy limits, as he hath sworn to thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give to thy fathers;9 If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, besides these three:10 That innocent blood may not be shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.11 But if any man shall hate his neighbor, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally, that he dieth, and he shall flee into one of these cities:12 Then the elders of his city shall send and bring him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.13 Thy eye shall not pity him, but thou shall remove the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may be well with thee.14 Thou shalt not remove thy neighbor's landmark, which they of old time have set in thy inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth; at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.16 If a false witness shall rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;17 Then both the men between whom the controversy is shall stand before the LORD, before the priests, and the judges, who shall be in those days;18 And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and behold, if the witness is a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;19 Then shall ye do to him, as he had thought to do to his brother: so shalt thou remove the evil from among you.20 And those who remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.21 And thy eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
