1 Simão Pedro, servo e apóstolo de Jesus Cristo, àqueles que, mediante a justiça de nosso Deus e Salvador Jesus Cristo, receberam conosco uma fé igualmente valiosa:2 Graça e paz lhes sejam multiplicadas, pelo pleno conhecimento de Deus e de Jesus, o nosso Senhor.3 Seu divino poder nos deu todas as coisas de que necessitamos para a vida e para a piedade, por meio do pleno conhecimento daquele que nos chamou para a sua própria glória e virtude.4 Por intermédio destas ele nos deu as suas grandiosas e preciosas promessas, para que por elas vocês se tornassem participantes da natureza divina e fugissem da corrupção que há no mundo, causada pela cobiça.5 Por isso mesmo, empenhem-se para acrescentar à sua fé a virtude; à virtude o conhecimento;6 ao conhecimento o domínio próprio; ao domínio próprio a perseverança; à perseverança a piedade;7 à piedade a fraternidade; e à fraternidade o amor.8 Porque, se essas qualidades existirem e estiverem crescendo em suas vidas, elas impedirão que vocês, no pleno conhecimento de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, sejam inoperantes e improdutivos.9 Todavia, se alguém não as tem, está cego, só vê o que está perto, esquecendo-se da purificação dos seus antigos pecados.10 Portanto, irmãos, empenhem-se ainda mais para consolidar o chamado e a eleição de vocês, pois se agirem dessa forma, jamais tropeçarão,11 e assim vocês estarão ricamente providos quando entrarem no Reino eterno de nosso Senhor e Salvador Jesus Cristo.12 Por isso, sempre terei o cuidado de lembrar-lhes estas coisas, se bem que vocês já as sabem e estão solidamente firmados na verdade que receberam.13 Considero importante, enquanto estiver no tabernáculo deste corpo, despertar a memória de vocês,14 porque sei que em breve deixarei este tabernáculo, como o nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo já me revelou.15 Eu me empenharei para que, também depois da minha partida, vocês sejam sempre capazes de lembrar-se destas coisas.16 De fato, não seguimos fábulas engenhosamente inventadas, quando lhes falamos a respeito do poder e da vinda de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo; pelo contrário, nós fomos testemunhas oculares da sua majestade.17 Ele recebeu honra e glória da parte de Deus Pai, quando da suprema glória lhe foi dirigida a voz que disse: "Este é o meu filho amado, em quem me agrado".18 Nós mesmos ouvimos essa voz vinda do céu, quando estávamos com ele no monte santo.19 Assim, temos ainda mais firme a palavra dos profetas, e vocês farão bem se a ela prestarem atenção, como a uma candeia que brilha em lugar escuro, até que o dia clareie e a estrela da alva nasça em seus corações.20 Antes de mais nada, saibam que nenhuma profecia da Escritura provém de interpretação pessoal,21 pois jamais a profecia teve origem na vontade humana, mas homens falaram da parte de Deus, impelidos pelo Espírito Santo.

1 Simon Peter, a bondservant and Apostle of Jesus Christ: To those to whom there has been allotted the same precious faith as that which is ours through the righteousness of our God and of our Saviour Jesus Christ.2 May more and more grace and peace be granted to you in a full knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,3 seeing that His divine power has given us all things that are needful for life and godliness, through our knowledge of Him who has appealed to us by His own glorious perfections.4 It is by means of these that He has granted us His precious and wondrous promises, in order that through them you may, one and all, become sharers in the very nature of God, having completely escaped the corruption which exists in the world through earthly cravings.5 But for this very reason –adding, on your part, all earnestness– along with your faith, manifest also a noble character: along with a noble character, knowledge;6 along with knowledge, self-control; along with self-control, power of endurance;7 along with power of endurance, godliness; along with godliness, brotherly affection; and along with brotherly affection, love.8 If these things exist in you, and continually increase, they prevent your being either idle or unfruitful in advancing towards a full knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.9 For the man in whom they are lacking is blind and cannot see distant objects, in that he has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his old sins.10 For this reason, brethren, be all the more in earnest to make sure that God has called you and chosen you; for it is certain that so long as you practise these things, you will never stumble.11 And so a triumphant admission into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ will be freely granted to you.12 For this reason I shall always persist in reminding you of these things, although you know them and are stedfast believers in truth which you already possess.13 But I think it right, so long as I remain in the body, my present dwelling-place, to arouse you by such reminders.14 For I know that the time for me to lay aside my body is now rapidly drawing near, even as our Lord Jesus Christ has revealed to me.15 So on every possible occasion I will also do my best to enable you to recall these things after my departure.16 For when we made known to you the power and Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, we were not eagerly following cleverly devised legends, but we had been eye-witnesses of His majesty.17 He received honour and glory from God the Father, and out of the wondrous glory words such as these were spoken to Him, »This is My dearly-loved Son, in whom I take delight.«18 And we ourselves heard these words come from Heaven, when we were with Him on the holy mountain.19 And in the written word of prophecy we have something more permanent; to which you do well to pay attention –as to a lamp shining in a dimly-lighted place– until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.20 But, above all, remember that no prophecy in Scripture will be found to have come from the prophet's own prompting;21 for never did any prophecy come by human will, but men sent by God spoke as they were impelled by the Holy Spirit.
