1 Se por estarmos em Cristo, nós temos alguma motivação, alguma exortação de amor, alguma comunhão no Espírito, alguma profunda afeição e compaixão,2 completem a minha alegria, tendo o mesmo modo de pensar, o mesmo amor, um só espírito e uma só atitude.3 Nada façam por ambição egoísta ou por vaidade, mas humildemente considerem os outros superiores a si mesmos.4 Cada um cuide, não somente dos seus interesses, mas também dos interesses dos outros.5 Seja a atitude de vocês a mesma de Cristo Jesus,6 que, embora sendo Deus, não considerou que o ser igual a Deus era algo a que devia apegar-se;7 mas esvaziou-se a si mesmo, vindo a ser servo, tornando-se semelhante aos homens.8 E, sendo encontrado em forma humana, humilhou-se a si mesmo e foi obediente até à morte, e morte de cruz!9 Por isso Deus o exaltou à mais alta posição e lhe deu o nome que está acima de todo nome,10 para que ao nome de Jesus se dobre todo joelho, no céu, na terra e debaixo da terra,11 e toda língua confesse que Jesus Cristo é o Senhor, para a glória de Deus Pai.12 Assim, meus amados, como sempre vocês obedeceram, não apenas em minha presença, porém muito mais agora na minha ausência, ponham em ação a salvação de vocês com temor e tremor,13 pois é Deus quem efetua em vocês tanto o querer quanto o realizar, de acordo com a boa vontade dele.14 Façam tudo sem queixas nem discussões,15 para que venham a tornar-se puros e irrepreensíveis, filhos de Deus inculpáveis no meio de uma geração corrompida e depravada, na qual vocês brilham como estrelas no universo,16 retendo firmemente a palavra da vida. Assim, no dia de Cristo eu me orgulharei de não ter corrido nem me esforçado inutilmente.17 Contudo, mesmo que eu esteja sendo derramado como oferta de bebida sobre o serviço que provém da fé que vocês têm, o sacrifício que oferecem a Deus, estou alegre e me regozijo com todos vocês.18 Estejam vocês também alegres, e regozijem-se comigo.19 Espero no Senhor Jesus enviar-lhes Timóteo brevemente, para que eu também me sinta animado quando receber notícias de vocês.20 Não tenho ninguém como ele, que tenha interesse sincero pelo bem-estar de vocês,21 pois todos buscam os seus próprios interesses e não os de Jesus Cristo.22 Mas vocês sabem que Timóteo foi aprovado, porque serviu comigo no trabalho do evangelho como um filho ao lado de seu pai.23 Portanto, é ele quem espero enviar, tão logo me certifique da minha situação,24 confiando no Senhor que em breve também poderei ir.25 Contudo, penso que será necessário enviar-lhes de volta Epafrodito, meu irmão, cooperador e companheiro de lutas, mensageiro que vocês enviaram para atender às minhas necessidades.26 Pois ele tem saudade de todos vocês e está angustiado porque ficaram sabendo que ele esteve doente.27 De fato, ficou doente e quase morreu. Mas Deus teve misericórdia dele, e não somente dele, mas também de mim, para que eu não tivesse tristeza sobre tristeza.28 Por isso, logo o enviarei, para que, quando o virem novamente, fiquem alegres e eu tenha menos tristeza.29 E peço que vocês o recebam no Senhor com grande alegria e honrem a homens como este,30 porque ele quase morreu por amor à causa de Cristo, arriscando a vida para suprir a ajuda que vocês não me podiam dar.

1 If then I can appeal to you as the followers of Christ, if there is any persuasive power in love and any common sharing of the Spirit, or if you have any tender-heartedness and compassion, make my joy complete by being of one mind,2 united by mutual love, with harmony of feeling giving your minds to one and the same object.3 Do nothing in a spirit of factiousness or of vainglory, but, with true humility, let every one regard the rest as being of more account than himself;4 each fixing his attention, not simply on his own interests, but on those of others also.5 Let the same disposition be in you which was in Christ Jesus.6 Although from the beginning He had the nature of God He did not reckon His equality with God a treasure to be tightly grasped.7 Nay, He stripped Himself of His glory, and took on Him the nature of a bondservant by becoming a man like other men.8 And being recognized as truly human, He humbled Himself and even stooped to die; yes, to die on a cross.9 It is in consequence of this that God has also so highly exalted Him, and has conferred on Him the Name which is supreme above every other,10 in order that in the Name of JESUS every knee should bow, of beings in Heaven, of those on the earth, and of those in the underworld,11 and that every tongue should confess that JESUS CHRIST is LORD, to the glory of God the Father.12 Therefore, my dearly-loved friends, as I have always found you obedient, labour earnestly with fear and trembling –not merely as though I were present with you, but much more now since I am absent from you– labour earnestly, I say, to make sure of your own salvation.13 For it is God Himself whose power creates within you the desire to do His gracious will and also brings about the accomplishment of the desire.14 Be ever on your guard against a grudging and contentious spirit,15 so that you may always prove yourselves to be blameless and spotless–irreproachable children of God in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as heavenly lights in the world,16 holding out to them a Message of Life. It will then be my glory on the day of Christ that I did not run my race in vain nor toil in vain.17 Nay, even if my life is to be poured as a libation upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I rejoice, and I congratulate you all.18 And I bid you also share my gladness, and congratulate me.19 But, if the Lord permits it, I hope before long to send Timothy to you, that I, in turn, may be cheered by getting news of you.20 For I have no one likeminded with him, who will cherish a genuine care for you.21 Everybody concerns himself about his own interests, not about those of Jesus Christ.22 But you know Timothy's approved worth–how, like a child working with his father, he has served with me in furtherance of the Good News.23 So it is he that I hope to send as soon as ever I see how things go with me;24 but trusting, as I do, in the Lord, I believe that I shall myself also come to you before long.25 Yet I deem it important to send Epaphroditus to you now–he is my brother and comrade both in labour and in arms, and is your messenger who has ministered to my needs.26 I send him because he is longing to see you all and is distressed at your having heard of his illness.27 For it is true that he has been ill, and was apparently at the point of death; but God had pity on him, and not only on him, but also on me, to save me from having sorrow upon sorrow.28 I am therefore all the more eager to send him, in the hope that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have the less sorrow.29 Receive him therefore with heartfelt Christian joy, and hold in honour men like him;30 because it was for the sake of Christ's work that he came so near death, hazarding, as he did, his very life in endeavouring to make good any deficiency that there might be in your gifts to me.
