1 Então Jesus saiu dali e foi para a região da Judéia e para o outro lado do Jordão. Novamente uma multidão veio a ele e, segundo o seu costume, ele a ensinava.2 Alguns fariseus aproximaram-se dele para pô-lo à prova, perguntando: "É permitido ao homem divorciar-se de sua mulher? "3 "O que Moisés lhes ordenou? ", perguntou ele.4 Eles disseram: "Moisés permitiu que o homem desse uma certidão de divórcio e a mandasse embora".5 Respondeu Jesus: "Moisés escreveu essa lei por causa da dureza de coração de vocês.6 Mas no princípio da criação Deus ‘os fez homem e mulher’.7 ‘Por esta razão, o homem deixará pai e mãe e se unirá à sua mulher,8 e os dois se tornarão uma só carne’. Assim, eles já não são dois, mas sim uma só carne.9 Portanto, o que Deus uniu, ninguém o separe".10 Quando estava em casa novamente, os discípulos interrogaram Jesus sobre o mesmo assunto.11 Ele respondeu: "Todo aquele que se divorciar de sua mulher e se casar com outra mulher, estará cometendo adultério contra ela.12 E se ela se divorciar de seu marido e se casar com outro homem, estará cometendo adultério".13 Alguns traziam crianças a Jesus para que ele tocasse nelas, mas os discípulos os repreendiam.14 Quando Jesus viu isso, ficou indignado e lhes disse: "Deixem vir a mim as crianças, não as impeçam; pois o Reino de Deus pertence aos que são semelhantes a elas.15 Digo-lhes a verdade: Quem não receber o Reino de Deus como uma criança, nunca entrará nele".16 Em seguida, tomou as crianças nos braços, impôs-lhes as mãos e as abençoou.17 Quando Jesus ia saindo, um homem correu em sua direção, pôs-se de joelhos diante dele e lhe perguntou: "Bom mestre, que farei para herdar a vida eterna? "18 Respondeu-lhe Jesus: "Por que você me chama bom? Ninguém é bom, a não ser um, que é Deus.19 Você conhece os mandamentos: ‘não matarás, não adulterarás, não furtarás, não darás falso testemunho, não enganarás ninguém, honra teu pai e tua mãe’".20 E ele declarou: "Mestre, a tudo isso tenho obedecido desde a minha adolescência".21 Jesus olhou para ele e o amou. "Falta-lhe uma coisa", disse ele. "Vá, venda tudo o que você possui e dê o dinheiro aos pobres, e você terá um tesouro no céu. Depois, venha e siga-me".22 Diante disso ele ficou abatido e afastou-se triste, porque tinha muitas riquezas.23 Jesus olhou ao redor e disse aos seus discípulos: "Como é difícil aos ricos entrar no Reino de Deus! "24 Os discípulos ficaram admirados com essas palavras. Mas Jesus repetiu: "Filhos, como é difícil entrar no Reino de Deus!25 É mais fácil passar um camelo pelo fundo de uma agulha do que um rico entrar no Reino de Deus".26 Os discípulos ficaram perplexos, e perguntavam uns aos outros: "Neste caso, quem pode ser salvo? "27 Jesus olhou para eles e respondeu: "Para o homem é impossível, mas para Deus não; todas as coisas são possíveis para Deus".28 Então Pedro começou a dizer-lhe: "Nós deixamos tudo para seguir-te".29 Respondeu Jesus: "Digo-lhes a verdade: Ninguém que tenha deixado casa, irmãos, irmãs, mãe, pai, filhos, ou campos, por causa de mim e do evangelho,30 deixará de receber cem vezes mais já no tempo presente casas, irmãos, irmãs, mães, filhos e campos, e com eles perseguição; e, na era futura, a vida eterna.31 Contudo, muitos primeiros serão últimos, e os últimos serão primeiros".32 Eles estavam subindo para Jerusalém, e Jesus ia à frente. Os discípulos estavam admirados, enquanto os que o seguiam estavam com medo. Novamente ele chamou à parte os Doze e lhes disse o que haveria de lhe acontecer:33 "Estamos subindo para Jerusalém e o Filho do homem será entregue aos chefes dos sacerdotes e aos mestres da lei. Eles o condenarão à morte e o entregarão aos gentios,34 que zombarão dele, cuspirão nele, o açoitarão e o matarão. Três dias depois ele ressuscitará".35 Nisso Tiago e João, filhos de Zebedeu, aproximaram-se dele e disseram: "Mestre, queremos que nos faças o que vamos te pedir".36 "O que vocês querem que eu lhes faça? ", perguntou ele.37 Eles responderam: "Permite que, na tua glória, nos assentemos um à tua direita e o outro à tua esquerda".38 Disse-lhes Jesus: "Vocês não sabem o que estão pedindo. Podem vocês beber o cálice que eu estou bebendo ou ser batizados com o batismo com que estou sendo batizado? "39 "Podemos", responderam eles. Jesus lhes disse: "Vocês beberão o cálice que estou bebendo e serão batizados com o batismo com que estou sendo batizado;40 mas o assentar-se à minha direita ou à minha esquerda não cabe a mim conceder. Esses lugares pertencem àqueles para quem foram preparados".41 Quando os outros dez ouviram essas coisas, ficaram indignados com Tiago e João.42 Jesus os chamou e disse: "Vocês sabem que aqueles que são considerados governantes das nações as dominam, e as pessoas importantes exercem poder sobre elas.43 Não será assim entre vocês. Pelo contrário, quem quiser tornar-se importante entre vocês deverá ser servo;44 e quem quiser ser o primeiro deverá ser escravo de todos.45 Pois nem mesmo o Filho do homem veio para ser servido, mas para servir e dar a sua vida em resgate por muitos".46 Então chegaram a Jericó. Quando Jesus e seus discípulos, juntamente com uma grande multidão, estavam saindo da cidade, o filho de Timeu, Bartimeu, que era cego, estava sentado à beira do caminho pedindo esmolas.47 Quando ouviu que era Jesus de Nazaré, começou a gritar: "Jesus, Filho de Davi, tem misericórdia de mim! "48 Muitos o repreendiam para que ficasse quieto, mas ele gritava ainda mais: "Filho de Davi, tem misericórdia de mim! "49 Jesus parou e disse: "Chamem-no". E chamaram o cego: "Ânimo! Levante-se! Ele o está chamando".50 Lançando sua capa para o lado, de um salto, pôs-se de pé e dirigiu-se a Jesus.51 "O que você quer que eu lhe faça? ", perguntou-lhe Jesus. O cego respondeu: "Mestre, eu quero ver! "52 "Vá", disse Jesus, "a sua fé o curou". Imediatamente ele recuperou a visão e seguia a Jesus pelo caminho.

1 Soon on His feet once more, He enters the district of Judaea and crosses the Jordan: again the people flock to Him, and ere long, as was usual with Him, He was teaching them once more.2 Presently a party of Pharisees come to Him with the question–seeking to entrap Him, »May a man divorce his wife?«3 »What rule did Moses lay down for you?« He answered.4 »Moses,« they said, »permitted a man to draw up a written notice of divorce, and to send his wife away.«5 »It was in consideration of your stubborn hearts,« said Jesus, »that Moses enacted this law for you;6 but from the beginning of the creation the rule was, `Male and female did God make them.7 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cling to his wife,8 and the two shall be one'; so that they are two no longer, but `one.'9 What, therefore, God has joined together let not man separate.«10 Indoors the disciples began questioning Jesus again on the same subject.11 He replied, »Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman, commits adultery against the first wife;12 and if a woman puts away her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.«13 One day people were bringing young children to Jesus for Him to touch them, but the disciples interfered.14 Jesus, however, on seeing this, was moved to indignation, and said to them, »Let the little children come to me: do not hinder them; for to those who are childlike the Kingdom of God belongs.15 In solemn truth I tell you that no one who does not receive the Kingdom of God like a little child will by any possibility enter it.«16 Then He took them in His arms and blessed them lovingly, one by one, laying His hands upon them.17 As He went out to resume His journey, there came a man running up to Him, who knelt at His feet and asked, »Good Rabbi, what am I to do in order to inherit the Life of the Ages?«18 »Why do you call me good?« asked Jesus in reply; »there is no one truly good except One–that is, God.19 You know the Commandments–`Do not murder;' `Do not commit adultery;' `Do not steal;' `Do not lie in giving evidence;' `Do not defraud;' `Honour thy father and thy mother.'«20 »Rabbi,« he replied, »all these Commandments I have carefully obeyed from my youth.«21 Then Jesus looked at him and loved him, and said, »One thing is lacking in you: go, sell all you possess and give the proceeds to the poor, and you shall have riches in Heaven; and come and be a follower of mine.«22 At these words his brow darkened, and he went away sad; for he was possessed of great wealth.23 Then looking round on His disciples Jesus said, »With how hard a struggle will the possessors of riches enter the Kingdom of God!«24 The disciples were amazed at His words. Jesus, however, said again, »Children, how hard a struggle is it for those who trust in riches to enter the Kingdom of God!25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God.«26 They were astonished beyond measure, and said to one another, »Who then can be saved?«27 Jesus looking on them said, »With men it is impossible, but not with God; for everything is possible with God.«28 »Remember,« said Peter to Him, »that we forsook everything and have become your followers.«29 »In solemn truth I tell you,« replied Jesus, »that there is no one who has forsaken house or brothers or sisters, or mother or father, or children or lands, for my sake and for the sake of the Good News,30 but will receive a hundred times as much now in this present life –houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, lands– and persecution with them–and in the coming age the Life of the Ages.31 But many who are now first will be last, and the last, first.«32 They were still on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them; they were full of wonder, and some, though they followed, did so with fear. Then, once more calling to Him the Twelve, He began to tell them what was about to happen to Him.33 »See,« He said, »we are going up to Jerusalem, where the Son of Man will be betrayed to the High Priests and the Scribes. They will condemn Him to death, and will hand Him over to the Gentiles;34 they will insult Him in cruel sport, spit on Him, scourge Him, and put Him to death; but on the third day He will rise to life again.«35 Then James and John, the sons of Zabdi, came up to Him and said, »Rabbi, we wish you would grant us whatever request we make of you.«36 »What would you have me do for you?« He asked.37 »Allow us,« they replied, »to sit one at your right hand and the other at your left hand, in your glory.«38 »You know not,« said He, »what you are asking. Are you able to drink out of the cup from which I am to drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am to be baptized?«39 »We are able,« they replied. »Out of the cup,« said Jesus, »from which I am to drink you shall drink, and with the baptism with which I am to be baptized you shall be baptized;40 but as to sitting at my right hand or at my left, that is not mine to give: it will be for those for whom it is reserved.«41 The other ten, hearing of it, were at first highly indignant with James and John.42 Jesus, however, called them to Him and said to them, »You are aware how those who are deemed rulers among the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men make them feel their authority;43 but it is not to be so among you. No, whoever desires to be great among you must be your servant;44 and whoever desires to be first among you must be the bondservant of all.45 For the Son of Man also did not come to be waited upon, but to wait on others, and to give His life as the redemption-price for a multitude of people.«46 They came to Jericho; and as He was leaving that town –Himself and His disciples and a great crowd– Bartimaeus (the son of Timaeus), a blind beggar, was sitting by the way-side.47 Hearing that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out, »Son of David, Jesus, have pity on me.«48 Many angrily told him to leave off shouting; but he only cried out all the louder, »Son of David, have pity on me.«49 Then Jesus stood still. »Call him,« He said. So they called the blind man. »Cheer up,« they said; »rise, he is calling you.«50 The man flung away his outer garment, sprang to his feet, and came to Jesus.51 »What shall I do for you?« said Jesus. »Rabboni,« replied the blind man, »let me recover my sight.«52 »Go,« said Jesus, »your faith has cured you.« Instantly he regained his sight, and followed Him along the road.
