1 Quando Balaão percebeu que o Senhor se agradava de abençoar Israel, não recorreu à adivinhação como antes. Em vez disso, voltou-se em direção ao deserto, 2 onde viu o povo de Israel acampado de acordo com suas tribos. Então o Espírito de Deus veio sobre Balaão, 3 e ele transmitiu a seguinte mensagem:

"Esta é a mensagem de Balaão, filho de Beor,

a mensagem do homem cujos olhos veem com clareza,

4 a mensagem daquele que ouve as palavras de Deus,

que tem uma visão concedida pelo Todo-poderoso,

que se curva com os olhos bem abertos:

5 Como são belas suas tendas, ó Jacó!

Como são lindas suas moradas, ó Israel!

6 Estendem-se diante de mim como palmeiras,*24.6 Ou como um vale.

como jardins à beira do rio.

São como aloés plantados pelo Senhor,

como cedros junto às águas.

7 Águas jorrarão de seus baldes,

e suas sementes serão bem regadas.

Seu rei será maior que Agague,

e seu reino será exaltado.

8 Deus os tirou do Egito;

ele é forte como o boi selvagem.

Devora todas as nações que se opõem a ele;

despedaça seus ossos

e com flechas as atravessa.

9 Como leão, Israel se agacha e se deita;

como a leoa, quem tem coragem de acordá-lo?

Sejam abençoados os que o abençoarem

e amaldiçoados os que o amaldiçoarem".

10 O rei Balaque se enfureceu contra Balaão e, batendo as palmas das mãos, gritou: "Eu o chamei para amaldiçoar meus inimigos; em vez disso, você os abençoou três vezes! 11 Vá embora! Volte para casa! Eu lhe prometi uma grande recompensa, mas o Senhor o impediu de recebê-la!".

12 Balaão disse a Balaque: "Você não se lembra do que expliquei a seus mensageiros? Eu lhes avisei: 13 ‘Mesmo que Balaque me desse seu palácio cheio de prata e ouro, eu não poderia fazer coisa alguma, boa ou má, contra a vontade do Senhor’! Avisei que só poderia falar aquilo que o Senhor dissesse! 14 Agora, volto para meu povo, mas primeiro lhe direi o que esse povo fará ao seu povo no futuro".

15 Balaão transmitiu a seguinte mensagem:

"Esta é a mensagem de Balaão, filho de Beor,

a mensagem do homem cujos olhos veem com clareza,

16 a mensagem daquele que ouve as palavras de Deus,

que possui conhecimento dado pelo Altíssimo,

que tem uma visão concedida pelo Todo-poderoso,

que se curva com os olhos bem abertos:

17 Eu o vejo, mas não agora;

eu o avisto, mas não de perto.

Uma estrela surgirá de Jacó,

um cetro se levantará de Israel.

Esmagará a cabeça*24.17 Conforme o Pentateuco Samaritano; o significado do termo hebraico é incerto. do povo de Moabe

e rachará o crânio dos descendentes de Sete.

18 Tomará posse de Edom

e conquistará seu inimigo, Seir,

enquanto Israel marcha adiante em triunfo.

19 De Jacó surgirá um governante

que destruirá os sobreviventes de Ar".

20 Então Balaão olhou na direção do povo de Amaleque e transmitiu a seguinte mensagem:

"Amaleque era a primeira de todas as nações,

mas seu destino é a destruição!".

21 Em seguida, Balaão olhou na direção dos queneus e transmitiu a seguinte mensagem:

"Sua habitação é segura;

seu ninho está apoiado nas rochas.

22 Os queneus, porém, serão destruídos

quando Assur os levar prisioneiros".

23 Balaão concluiu sua mensagem com estas palavras:

"Ai! Quem pode sobreviver

quando Deus fizer essas coisas?

24 Navios virão do litoral de Chipre,*24.24 Em hebraico, Quitim.

oprimirão Assur e afligirão Héber,

mas eles também serão destruídos".

25 Então Balaão se levantou e voltou para sua terra, e Balaque também seguiu seu caminho.

1 And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he went not, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness.*24.1 to seek…: Heb. to the meeting of 2 And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him. 3 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said:*24.3 whose…: Heb. who had his eyes shut, but now opened 4 He hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open: 5 How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel! 6 As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river’s side, as the trees of lign aloes which the LORD hath planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters. 7 He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted. 8 God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows. 9 He couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who shall stir him up? Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and cursed is he that curseth thee.

10 And Balak’s anger was kindled against Balaam, and he smote his hands together: and Balak said unto Balaam, I called thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast altogether blessed them these three times. 11 Therefore now flee thou to thy place: I thought to promote thee unto great honour; but, lo, the LORD hath kept thee back from honour. 12 And Balaam said unto Balak, Spake I not also to thy messengers which thou sentest unto me, saying, 13 If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of mine own mind; but what the LORD saith, that will I speak? 14 And now, behold, I go unto my people: come therefore, and I will advertise thee what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days.

15 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said: 16 He hath said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open: 17 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.*24.17 smite…: or, smite through the princes of 18 And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly. 19 Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.

Kain*24.22 until…: or, how long shall it be ere Asshur carry thee away captive 23 And he took up his parable, and said, Alas, who shall live when God doeth this! 24 And ships shall come from the coast of Chittim, and shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber, and he also shall perish for ever. 25 And Balaam rose up, and went and returned to his place: and Balak also went his way.
