1 Portanto, uma vez que estamos rodeados de tão grande multidão de testemunhas, livremo-nos de todo peso que nos torna vagarosos e do pecado que nos atrapalha, e corramos com perseverança a corrida que foi posta diante de nós. 2 Mantenhamos o olhar firme em Jesus, o líder e aperfeiçoador de nossa fé. Por causa da alegria que o esperava, ele suportou a cruz sem se importar com a vergonha. Agora ele está sentado no lugar de honra à direita do trono de Deus. 3 Pensem em toda a hostilidade que ele suportou dos pecadores; desse modo, vocês não ficarão cansados nem desanimados. 4 Afinal, ainda não chegaram a arriscar a vida na luta contra o pecado.

5 Acaso vocês se esqueceram das palavras de ânimo que Deus lhes dirigiu como filhos dele? Ele disse:

"Meu filho, não despreze a disciplina do Senhor;

não desanime quando ele o corrigir.

6 Pois o Senhor disciplina quem ele ama

e castiga todo aquele que aceita como filho".

7 Enquanto suportam essa disciplina de Deus, lembrem-se de que ele os trata como filhos. Quem já ouviu falar de um filho que nunca foi disciplinado pelo pai? 8 Se Deus não os disciplina como faz com todos os seus filhos, significa que vocês não são filhos de verdade, mas ilegítimos. 9 Uma vez que respeitávamos nossos pais terrenos que nos disciplinavam, não devemos nos submeter ainda mais à disciplina do Pai de nosso espírito e, assim, obter vida?

10 Pois nossos pais nos disciplinaram por alguns anos como julgaram melhor, mas a disciplina de Deus é sempre para o nosso bem, a fim de que participemos de sua santidade. 11 Nenhuma disciplina é agradável no momento em que é aplicada; ao contrário, é dolorosa. Mais tarde, porém, produz uma colheita de vida justa e de paz para os que assim são corrigidos.

12 Portanto, revigorem suas mãos cansadas e seus joelhos enfraquecidos. 13 Façam caminhos retos para seus pés a fim de que os mancos não caiam, mas sejam fortalecidos.

14 Esforcem-se para viver em paz com todos e procurem ter uma vida santa, sem a qual ninguém verá o Senhor. 15 Cuidem uns dos outros para que nenhum de vocês deixe de experimentar a graça de Deus. Fiquem atentos para que não brote nenhuma raiz venenosa de amargura que cause perturbação, contaminando muitos. 16 Vigiem para que ninguém seja imoral ou profano, como Esaú, que trocou seus direitos como filho mais velho por uma simples refeição. 17 Como vocês sabem, mais tarde, quando ele quis a bênção do pai, foi rejeitado. Era tarde para que houvesse arrependimento, embora ele tivesse implorado com lágrimas.

18 Vocês não chegaram a um monte que se pode tocar, a um lugar de fogo ardente, escuridão, trevas e vendaval, 19 ao toque da trombeta e à voz tão terrível que aqueles que a ouviram suplicaram que nada mais lhes fosse dito, 20 pois não podiam suportar a ordem que recebiam: "Se até mesmo um animal tocar no monte, deve ser apedrejado". 21 O próprio Moisés ficou tão assustado com o que viu a ponto de dizer: "Fiquei apavorado e tremendo de medo".

22 Vocês, porém, chegaram ao monte Sião, à cidade do Deus vivo, à Jerusalém celestial, aos incontáveis milhares de anjos em alegre reunião, 23 à congregação dos filhos mais velhos, cujos nomes estão escritos no céu, e a Deus, que é juiz de todos, aos espíritos dos justos no céu, agora aperfeiçoados, 24 a Jesus, o mediador da nova aliança, e ao sangue aspergido, que fala de coisas melhores do que falava o sangue de Abel.

25 Tenham cuidado para não se recusarem a ouvir aquele que fala. Porque, se aqueles que se recusaram a ouvir o mensageiro terreno não escaparam, certamente não escaparemos se rejeitarmos aquele que nos fala do céu. 26 Quando Deus falou naquela ocasião, sua voz fez a terra tremer, mas agora ele promete: "Mais uma vez, farei tremer não só a terra, mas também os céus". 27 Isso significa que toda a criação será abalada e removida, de modo que permaneçam apenas as coisas inabaláveis.

28 Uma vez que recebemos um reino inabalável, sejamos gratos e agrademos a Deus adorando-o com reverência e santo temor. 29 Porque nosso Deus é um fogo consumidor.

1 Therefore let’s also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

3 For consider him who has endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, that you don’t grow weary, fainting in your souls. 4 You have not yet resisted to blood, striving against sin. 5 You have forgotten the exhortation which reasons with you as with children,

"My son, don’t take lightly the chastening of the Lord,

nor faint when you are reproved by him;

6 for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines,

and chastises every son whom he receives."

7 It is for discipline that you endure. God deals with you as with children, for what son is there whom his father doesn’t discipline? 8 But if you are without discipline, of which all have been made partakers, then you are illegitimate, and not children. 9 Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days disciplined us as seemed good to them, but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness. 11 All chastening seems for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. 12 Therefore lift up the hands that hang down and the feeble knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.

14 Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man will see the Lord, 15 looking carefully lest there be any man who falls short of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you and many be defiled by it, 16 lest there be any sexually immoral person or profane person, like Esau, who sold his birthright for one meal. 17 For you know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for a change of mind though he sought it diligently with tears.

18 For you have not come to a mountain that might be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness, darkness, storm, 19 the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which those who heard it begged that not one more word should be spoken to them, 20 for they could not stand that which was commanded, "If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned". 21 So fearful was the appearance that Moses said, "I am terrified and trembling."

22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable multitudes of angels, 23 to the festal gathering and assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, 24 to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better than that of Abel.

25 See that you don’t refuse him who speaks. For if they didn’t escape when they refused him who warned on the earth, how much more will we not escape who turn away from him who warns from heaven, 26 whose voice shook the earth then, but now he has promised, saying, "Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heavens." 27 This phrase, "Yet once more" signifies the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain. 28 Therefore, receiving a Kingdom that can’t be shaken, let’s have grace, through which we serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe, 29 for our God is a consuming fire.
