1 Certo dia, Sansão estava em Timna e viu uma moça do povo filisteu. 2 Quando voltou para casa, disse a seu pai e a sua mãe: "Vi uma moça filisteia em Timna. Quero me casar com ela. Consigam aquela moça para mim".

3 Seu pai e sua mãe se opuseram: "Não há uma moça sequer em nossa tribo ou entre todo o nosso povo com quem você possa se casar? Por que tem de procurar uma esposa entre os filisteus pagãos?".

Mas Sansão disse a seu pai: "Consiga a moça para mim. É ela que eu quero". 4 Seus pais não sabiam que o Senhor estava agindo no meio disso tudo, para criar uma oportunidade de agir contra os filisteus que, na época, dominavam Israel.

5 Quando Sansão e seus pais estavam descendo a Timna, de repente um jovem leão atacou Sansão perto dos vinhedos de Timna. 6 Naquele momento, o Espírito do Senhor veio sobre Sansão com tamanho poder que ele rasgou o animal pelas mandíbulas usando as próprias mãos, com a mesma facilidade que se despedaça um cabrito. Contudo, não contou a seus pais o que havia acontecido. 7 Quando chegou a Timna, conversou com a moça e se agradou muito dela.

8 Algum tempo depois, quando voltou a Timna para o casamento, saiu do caminho para ver o cadáver do leão. Descobriu que um enxame de abelhas havia feito mel dentro da carcaça. 9 Pegou um pouco de mel com as mãos e foi comendo pelo caminho. Também deu um pouco a seu pai e a sua mãe, e eles comeram. Mas Sansão não lhes contou que havia tirado o mel da carcaça do leão.

10 Enquanto seu pai estava em Timna para o casamento, Sansão ofereceu uma festa ali, como era costume entre os noivos. 11 Quando os pais da noiva o viram, escolheram trinta rapazes da cidade para o acompanharem na festa.

12 Sansão lhes disse: "Vou lhes propor um enigma. Se conseguirem decifrá-lo durante estes sete dias de celebração, darei a vocês trinta camisas de linho fino e trinta conjuntos de roupa. 13 Mas, se não conseguirem decifrá-lo, vocês me darão trinta camisas de linho fino e trinta conjuntos de roupa".

"Está bem", concordaram eles. "Proponha seu enigma."

14 Ele disse:

"Do que come veio algo para comer,

do que é forte veio algo doce".

Três dias depois, eles ainda tentavam encontrar a resposta. 15 No quarto dia, disseram à esposa de Sansão: "Convença seu marido a explicar o enigma; caso contrário, queimaremos vivos você e sua família! Você nos convidou à festa só para nos deixar pobres?".

16 Então a esposa de Sansão lhe disse, aos prantos: "Você não me ama! Você me odeia! Propôs um enigma ao meu povo, mas não me contou a resposta!".

Ele respondeu: "Não revelei o enigma nem a meu pai e minha mãe. Por que deveria contá-lo a você?". 17 Ela chorava cada vez que estava com ele, e assim continuou até o último dia da festa. Por fim, de tanto importunar Sansão, no sétimo dia ele lhe contou a resposta. Então ela explicou o enigma aos rapazes.

18 Antes do pôr do sol do sétimo dia, os homens da cidade vieram dar a resposta a Sansão:

"O que é mais doce que o mel?

O que é mais forte que o leão?".

Sansão respondeu: "Se vocês não tivessem arado com minha novilha, não teriam resolvido meu enigma!".

19 Então o Espírito do Senhor veio com poder sobre Sansão. Ele desceu à cidade de Ascalom, matou trinta homens, tomou seus pertences e deu as roupas deles aos homens que haviam resolvido o enigma. Contudo, ficou furioso com o que tinha acontecido e voltou a morar na casa de seus pais. 20 A noiva de Sansão foi dada como esposa ao rapaz que o havia acompanhado na cerimônia.

1 Samson went down to Timnah, and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines. 2 He came up, and told his father and his mother, saying, "I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines. Now therefore get her for me as my wife."

3 Then his father and his mother said to him, "Isn’t there a woman among your brothers’ daughters, or among all my people, that you go to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines?"

Samson said to his father, "Get her for me, for she pleases me well."

4 But his father and his mother didn’t know that it was of Yahweh; for he sought an occasion against the Philistines. Now at that time the Philistines ruled over Israel.

5 Then Samson went down to Timnah with his father and his mother, and came to the vineyards of Timnah; and behold, a young lion roared at him. 6 Yahweh’s Spirit came mightily on him, and he tore him as he would have torn a young goat with his bare hands, but he didn’t tell his father or his mother what he had done. 7 He went down and talked with the woman, and she pleased Samson well. 8 After a while he returned to take her, and he went over to see the carcass of the lion; and behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey. 9 He took it into his hands, and went on, eating as he went. He came to his father and mother and gave to them, and they ate, but he didn’t tell them that he had taken the honey out of the lion’s body. 10 His father went down to the woman; and Samson made a feast there, for the young men used to do so. 11 When they saw him, they brought thirty companions to be with him.

12 Samson said to them, "Let me tell you a riddle now. If you can tell me the answer within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing; 13 but if you can’t tell me the answer, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing."

They said to him, "Tell us your riddle, that we may hear it."

14 He said to them,

"Out of the eater came out food.

Out of the strong came out sweetness."

They couldn’t in three days declare the riddle. 15 On the seventh day, they said to Samson’s wife, "Entice your husband, that he may declare to us the riddle, lest we burn you and your father’s house with fire. Have you called us to impoverish us? Isn’t that so?"

16 Samson’s wife wept before him, and said, "You just hate me, and don’t love me. You’ve told a riddle to the children of my people, and haven’t told it to me."

He said to her, "Behold, I haven’t told my father or my mother, so why should I tell you?"

17 She wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted; and on the seventh day, he told her, because she pressed him severely; and she told the riddle to the children of her people. 18 The men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down, "What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?"

He said to them,

"If you hadn’t plowed with my heifer,

you wouldn’t have found out my riddle."

19 Yahweh’s Spirit came mightily on him, and he went down to Ashkelon and struck thirty men of them. He took their plunder, then gave the changes of clothing to those who declared the riddle. His anger burned, and he went up to his father’s house. 20 But Samson’s wife was given to his companion, who had been his friend.
