1 Ouvindo a rainha de Sabá toda a fama de Salomão e como o Senhor lhe tinha dado tantas qualidades, resolveu vir apresentar-lhe pessoalmente algumas questões bastante complexas para ver a resposta que daria. 2 Chegou a Jerusalém com uma grande comitiva e muitos camelos carregados de especiarias, ouro e joias, e colocou-lhe as questões que entendeu. 3 Salomão a tudo respondeu; nada se revelou demasiado difícil para ele; deu-lhe sempre a resposta exata. 4 Ela depressa se deu conta de que tudo o que lhe tinham dito, quanto à sua grande sabedoria, era verdadeiro. Pôde igualmente constatar a beleza do seu palácio. 5 Quando viu os ricos pratos que vinham à mesa, o grande número de criados a servir nos seus belos uniformes, os copeiros e os inúmeros holocaustos que oferecia pelo fogo ao Senhor, ficou como que fora de si, de espanto!

6 A rainha disse a Salomão: "O que ouvi no meu país, acerca da tua sabedoria e das belíssimas coisas que aqui há, é tudo verdade. 7 Antes de chegar não podia acreditar, mas agora, eu própria pude verificar tudo isso com os meus próprios olhos. O que me tinham contado não correspondia sequer a metade da realidade! A tua sabedoria e a tua riqueza são, de longe, maiores do que aquilo que tinha ouvido! 8 O teu povo é feliz, o pessoal do teu palácio está satisfeito, e não podia ser de outra forma, se vivem constantemente a ouvir a tua sabedoria! 9 Bendito seja o Senhor, o teu Deus, que te escolheu e te colocou sobre o trono de Israel. O amor do Senhor por Israel é eterno, por isso, lhe deu um rei como tu! E tu ofereces ao teu povo uma governação justa e boa!"

10 Depois deu ao rei um presente de 4000 quilos de ouro e uma enorme quantidade de especiarias e de pedras preciosas. Nunca se viu em Israel tantas e tais especiarias como as que ofereceu a rainha de Sabá a Salomão.

11 Quando os navios do rei Hirão trouxeram a Salomão ouro de Ofir, também carregaram um grande fornecimento de pedras preciosas e madeira de sândalo. 12 A madeira, usou-a o rei para a casa do Senhor e para o palácio real, e para fabricar instrumentos, como harpas e liras para acompanharem os cantores. Nunca antes nem depois se viu tanta quantidade desta bela madeira.

13 Em troca dos presentes recebidos, o rei Salomão ofereceu à rainha de Sabá tudo o que ela lhe pediu, além dos presentes que já tinha planeado ofertar-lhe. Depois disso, regressou à sua terra com o seu séquito e aqueles que a serviam.

14 Todos os anos Salomão recebia 23 toneladas de ouro. 15 Além disso, recebia as taxas e os benefícios dos negócios que fazia com reis da Arábia e com outros territórios daquela região.

16 Salomão mandou fazer, com parte desse ouro, 200 peças de armadura, pesando cada uma 7 quilos. 17 E ainda 300 escudos, tendo mandado pesar para cada um aproximadamente 3,5 quilos de ouro. Conservou-os no Salão da Floresta do Líbano.

18 Também mandou construir um enorme trono de marfim e revesti-lo de ouro puro. 19 Tinha seis degraus e um espaldar com descansos para os braços e um leão de cada lado. 20 Nos degraus havia igualmente dois leões, de cada lado, ao todo doze. Não havia no mundo outro trono tão deslumbrante como aquele.

21 Todas as taças que o rei Salomão usava eram de ouro puro e no Salão da Floresta do Líbano todo o serviço de jantar era feito em ouro. Não se usava prata, porque nesse tempo não tinha muito valor.

22 A frota comercial do rei Salomão e do rei Hirão trazia, de três em três anos, um grande fornecimento de ouro, prata e marfim, e também de macacos e pavões, que chegava aos portos de Israel.

23 Desta forma, o rei Salomão era o mais rico e o mais sábio de todos os reis da Terra. 24 Pessoas de várias terras vinham visitá-lo e ouvir da sua boca a sabedoria que Deus lhe pusera no coração. 25 Traziam-lhe igualmente, todos os anos, presentes em prata e ouro, armas, rico vestuário, especiarias, cavalos e mulas.

26 Organizou uma enorme força militar com 1400 carros de combate e recrutou 12 000 cavaleiros, para formarem uma guarda de proteção às cidades onde ficaram depositados os carros, ainda que alguns tivessem ficado em Jerusalém, sob o controlo direto do rei. 27 Naqueles dias, o rei tornou a prata tão abundante como as pedras em Jerusalém; o cedro também não tinha muito mais valor do que a madeira de uma simples figueira brava de planície. 28 Salomão enviou ao Egito especialistas no comércio de cavalos para comprarem manadas inteiras a preços especiais. 29 Por esse tempo, os carros egípcios eram vendidos por 7 quilos de prata e os cavalos por cerca de 1,7 quilos de prata, e entregues em Jerusalém. Muitos eram posteriormente vendidos a reis hititas e arameus.

14 Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold, 15 Beside that he had of the merchantmen, and of the traffick of the spice merchants, and of all the kings of Arabia, and of the governors of the country.*10.15 governors: or, captains

16 And king Solomon made two hundred targets of beaten gold: six hundred shekels of gold went to one target. 17 And he made three hundred shields of beaten gold; three pound of gold went to one shield: and the king put them in the house of the forest of Lebanon.
