1 Quando Salomão terminou a construção do templo do Senhor, do palácio real e de tudo quanto se propusera fazer, 2 o Senhor apareceu-lhe uma segunda vez, a primeira tinha sido em Gibeão, 3 e disse-lhe:

"Ouvi a tua oração. Santifiquei este templo que construíste e nele coloquei o meu nome para sempre. Vigiarei sobre ele e o meu coração ali estará constantemente. 4 Quanto a ti mesmo, se andares perante mim como o teu pai David, em honestidade e integridade de coração, se respeitares os meus mandamentos e guardares a minha palavra como te ordenei, 5 farei com que os teus descendentes sejam reis de Israel para sempre, tal como prometi a David, teu pai, quando lhe disse: ‘Não te faltará descendente para reinar sobre o trono de Israel.’

6 Contudo, se tu ou os teus filhos se afastarem de mim, se deixarem de seguir as leis e mandamentos que vos dei, para servirem e adorarem outros deuses, 7 então arrancarei o povo de Israel da sua terra, da terra que lhes dei. Tirá-lo-ei deste templo, que santifiquei por causa do meu nome, e afastá-lo-ei da minha vista. Israel tornar-se-á motivo de desprezo e de escárnio para todas as nações, uma desgraça que toda a gente receia que venha a acontecer-lhes. 8 Este templo ficará num montão de ruínas e qualquer pessoa que por aqui passar ficará espantada e abanará a cabeça dizendo: ‘Porque é que o Senhor fez tais coisas a esta terra e a este templo?’ 9 E a resposta será: ‘Porque este povo abandonou o Senhor, seu Deus, que tirou da terra do Egito os seus antepassados, e agora adora outros deuses. Foi por essa razão que o Senhor trouxe sobre ele este grande mal.’ "

10 Tinham-se passado 20 anos desde que Salomão se tornara rei e os seus grandes projetos de construção, como o templo e o palácio real, estavam concretizados. 11 O soberano deu vinte cidades da Galileia ao rei Hirão de Tiro em pagamento de toda a madeira de cedro e de faia e de todo o ouro que este lhe tinha fornecido para as referidas construções. 12 Hirão deslocou-se desde Tiro para visitar as cidades e não ficou nada contente com elas. 13 "Que negócio é este, meu irmão?", perguntou ele. "Estas povoações não passam de montes de areia seca!" Por isso, ainda hoje são conhecidas por Terra de Cabul (sem valor). 14 É que Hirão tinha enviado a Salomão 4000 quilos de ouro.

15 Salomão tinha imposto o trabalho obrigatório para construir o templo, o seu palácio, a fortaleza de Milo, a muralha de Jerusalém e as cidades de Hazor, Megido e Gezer. 16 Esta última, a cidade de Gezer, tinha sido conquistada e incendiada pelo rei do Egito que matou toda a sua população de cananeus; mais tarde deu-a em dote à sua filha, quando ela se casou com Salomão. 17 Assim, Salomão reconstruiu Gezer, ao mesmo tempo que povoações como Bete-Horom de Baixo, 18 Baalate e Tadmor, a cidade do deserto. 19 Construiu igualmente povoações para depósito de abastecimentos e outras onde os seus carros de combate e os cavalos eram guardados. Construiu tudo quanto desejou em Jerusalém, no Líbano e por todo o seu reino.

20 O povo recrutado para tributo de trabalho obrigatório foi o que sobreviveu dos países conquistados: amorreus, hititas, perizeus, heveus e jebuseus, gente que não era do povo de Israel. 21 Porque o povo de Israel não tinha sido capaz de os expulsar completamente, quando da conquista da terra de Israel, e por isso se mantem ainda hoje a prática de obrigar o tributo de trabalho obrigatório. 22 Salomão não recrutou nenhum israelita para esta obra; estes foram chamados como soldados, oficiais do exército, comandantes de companhias de carros de combate e de cavalaria. 23 Além disso, havia 550 homens de Israel com a função de fiscais dos trabalhos.

24 O soberano fez a filha do Faraó mudar os seus aposentos da Cidade de David, o sector antigo de Jerusalém, para o novo palácio que lhe construíra. Depois mandou construir a fortaleza de Milo.

25 Após a conclusão do templo, Salomão oferecia holocaustos e ofertas de paz três vezes por ano no altar que construíra. Também queimava incenso sobre ele.

26 O soberano tinha também um estaleiro naval em Eziom-Geber, perto de Elote, no mar Vermelho na terra de Edom, onde mandou construir uma armada de navios. 27 O rei Hirão forneceu marinheiros experimentados para acompanharem as tripulações de Salomão. 28 Estas fizeram viagens a Ofir, trazendo 14 toneladas de ouro para o rei Salomão.

1 And it came to pass, when Solomon had finished the building of the house of the LORD, and the king’s house, and all Solomon’s desire which he was pleased to do, 2 That the LORD appeared to Solomon the second time, as he had appeared unto him at Gibeon. 3 And the LORD said unto him, I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made before me: I have hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually. 4 And if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my statutes and my judgments: 5 Then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel. 6 But if ye shall at all turn from following me, ye or your children, and will not keep my commandments and my statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods, and worship them: 7 Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people: 8 And at this house, which is high, every one that passeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss; and they shall say, Why hath the LORD done thus unto this land, and to this house? 9 And they shall answer, Because they forsook the LORD their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have taken hold upon other gods, and have worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath the LORD brought upon them all this evil.

10 And it came to pass at the end of twenty years, when Solomon had built the two houses, the house of the LORD, and the king’s house, 11 (Now Hiram the king of Tyre had furnished Solomon with cedar trees and fir trees, and with gold, according to all his desire,) that then king Solomon gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee. 12 And Hiram came out from Tyre to see the cities which Solomon had given him; and they pleased him not.*9.12 pleased…: Heb. were not right in his eyes 13 And he said, What cities are these which thou hast given me, my brother? And he called them the land of Cabul unto this day.*9.13 Cabul: that is, displeasing, or, dirty 14 And Hiram sent to the king sixscore talents of gold.

15 And this is the reason of the levy which king Solomon raised; for to build the house of the LORD, and his own house, and Millo, and the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and Megiddo, and Gezer. 16 For Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up, and taken Gezer, and burnt it with fire, and slain the Canaanites that dwelt in the city, and given it for a present unto his daughter, Solomon’s wife. 17 And Solomon built Gezer, and Beth-horon the nether, 18 And Baalath, and Tadmor in the wilderness, in the land, 19 And all the cities of store that Solomon had, and cities for his chariots, and cities for his horsemen, and that which Solomon desired to build in Jerusalem, and in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion.*9.19 that which…: Heb. the desire of Solomon which he desired 20 And all the people that were left of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, which were not of the children of Israel, 21 Their children that were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel also were not able utterly to destroy, upon those did Solomon levy a tribute of bondservice unto this day. 22 But of the children of Israel did Solomon make no bondmen: but they were men of war, and his servants, and his princes, and his captains, and rulers of his chariots, and his horsemen. 23 These were the chief of the officers that were over Solomon’s work, five hundred and fifty, which bare rule over the people that wrought in the work.

24 But Pharaoh’s daughter came up out of the city of David unto her house which Solomon had built for her: then did he build Millo.

25 And three times in a year did Solomon offer burnt offerings and peace offerings upon the altar which he built unto the LORD, and he burnt incense upon the altar that was before the LORD. So he finished the house.*9.25 upon the altar that: Heb. upon it, etc

26 And king Solomon made a navy of ships in Ezion-geber, which is beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red sea, in the land of Edom.*9.26 shore: Heb. lip 27 And Hiram sent in the navy his servants, shipmen that had knowledge of the sea, with the servants of Solomon. 28 And they came to Ophir, and fetched from thence gold, four hundred and twenty talents, and brought it to king Solomon.
