1 O povo de Judá coroou Uzias*26.1 No livro de 2 Reis, este rei é também chamado Azarias., que tinha 16 anos, para suceder a seu pai, Amazias 2 Este reconstruiu a cidade de Elote e reintegrou-a em Judá, após a morte de seu pai. 3 Uzias tinha dezasseis anos quando foi investido rei, e reinou durante 52 anos em Jerusalém. A sua mãe chamava-se Jecolia e era originária de Jerusalém. 4 Conduziu-se com retidão aos olhos do Senhor, imitando o seu pai Amazias naquilo que este tinha feito de bem. 5 Enquanto viveu Zacarias, homem entendido nas visões de Deus, Uzias esforçou-se por fazer o que era reto aos olhos do Senhor. Enquanto o rei buscou a Deus, as coisas correram-lhe bem.

6 Declarou guerra aos filisteus e conquistou a cidade de Gate, derrubando as suas muralhas; fez o mesmo às cidades de Jabné e Asdode. Construiu posteriormente novas povoações, na área de Asdode e noutras partes da Filisteia. 7 Deus ajudou-o, não somente nessas guerras contra os filisteus, mas ainda contra os árabes de Gur-Baal e contra os meunitas. 8 Os amonitas ficaram a pagar-lhe um tributo, e a sua fama espalhou-se até ao Egito, tornando-se muito poderoso.

9 Edificou torres fortificadas em Jerusalém, na porta do Canto, na porta do vale e nos ângulos da muralha. 10 Também construiu fortalezas no Negueve, assim como muitos reservatórios de água, pois tinha grandes rebanhos e gado, tanto nos vales como nas planícies. Era um homem que amava o trabalho agrícola; tinha ao seu serviço fazendeiros e vinhateiros nas montanhas e nas campinas férteis.

11 Reorganizou o exército em regimentos, enviando para os destacamentos militares homens aptos para o combate, segundo o recrutamento ordenado por Jeiel, secretário-geral do exército, e pelo seu assistente Maaseia. O comando militar das suas tropas estava sob as ordens de Hananias. 12 Dentro do exército, 2600 bravos oficiais, todos eles chefes de clãs, tinham responsabilidades de chefia. 13 O número total dos militares alistados era de 307 500 homens, todos cuidadosamente preparados para o combate e dispostos a obedecer às ordens do rei.

14 Uzias equipou o exército com armamento: escudos, lanças, couraças, arcos, e até fundas para arremesso de pedras. 15 Forneceu também capacetes para os soldados. Mandou igualmente construir máquinas de guerra, inventadas por competentes construtores de engenhos, as quais ficaram em Jerusalém. Essas máquinas serviam para atirar flechas e grandes pedras, a partir das torres fortificadas nos cantos da muralha. Ganhou grande fama e tornou-se poderoso, porque o Senhor o ajudou.

16 Depois disso, quando se viu cheio de poder, começou a tornar-se orgulhoso e corrupto. Transgrediu as leis do Senhor, seu Deus, entrando no santuário do templo, o que lhe era absolutamente ilícito, e queimou ele próprio incenso sobre o altar. 17 Azarias, o sumo sacerdote, entrou atrás dele, acompanhado de 80 sacerdotes, todos homens fortes. 18 Ordenou-lhe que saísse dali: "Não é da tua competência, Uzias, queimar incenso perante o Senhor!", declarou-lhe. "Essa é uma função estritamente reservada aos sacerdotes, aos filhos de Aarão, que foram consagrados para esse serviço. Retira-te daqui! Transgrediste contra o Senhor Deus, e o que estás a fazer não é honroso para ti!"

19 Uzias ficou furioso e recusou largar o incensário que segurava na mão. Nessa altura, começou a aparecer-lhe lepra na testa, ali aos olhos de todos os sacerdotes. 20 Estes e Azarias, quando viram aquilo, empurraram-no apressadamente para fora. Ele próprio se apressou a sair dali, pois reconheceu que o Senhor o castigava.

21 Uzias ficou leproso até morrer e foi obrigado a viver isolado, numa casa à parte, excluído do contacto com as pessoas e com o templo. O seu filho Jotão tornou-se regente, gerindo os assuntos da governação do reino e atendendo aos problemas do povo.

22 O resto dos acontecimentos deste reinado, do começo até ao final, foi escrito pelo profeta Isaías, filho de Amós. 23 Quando morreu, Uzias foi sepultado no cemitério real, apesar de estar leproso. O seu filho Jotão ascendeu ao trono.

16 But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense. 17 And Azariah the priest went in after him, and with him fourscore priests of the LORD, that were valiant men: 18 And they withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him, It appertaineth not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the LORD, but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast trespassed; neither shall it be for thine honour from the LORD God. 19 Then Uzziah was wroth, and had a censer in his hand to burn incense: and while he was wroth with the priests, the leprosy even rose up in his forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD, from beside the incense altar. 20 And Azariah the chief priest, and all the priests, looked upon him, and, behold, he was leprous in his forehead, and they thrust him out from thence; yea, himself hasted also to go out, because the LORD had smitten him. 21 And Uzziah the king was a leper unto the day of his death, and dwelt in a several house, being a leper; for he was cut off from the house of the LORD: and Jotham his son was over the king’s house, judging the people of the land.*26.21 several: Heb. free

22 Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah, first and last, did Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, write. 23 So Uzziah slept with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the field of the burial which belonged to the kings; for they said, He is a leper: and Jotham his son reigned in his stead.
