1 Josias anunciou que a Páscoa para o Senhor seria celebrada no dia 14 do primeiro mês*35.1 Mês de Abibe ou Nisan. Entre a lua nova do mês de março e o mês de abril. em Jerusalém; o cordeiro pascal seria morto no final desse dia. 2 Restabeleceu as funções dos sacerdotes, instigando-os a retomar o serviço no templo. 3 Emitiu também a seguinte ordem aos levitas que se tinham consagrado e que se dedicavam ao ensino em Israel: "Visto que a arca está definitivamente depositada no templo que Salomão mandou construir, e sendo que não precisam mais de a carregar aos ombros, apliquem o vosso tempo ao serviço do Senhor, vosso Deus, junto do seu povo. 4 Distribuam-se conforme os turnos de atividade em que estavam organizados os vossos antecessores, tal como foram agrupados por David, rei de Israel, e pelo seu filho Salomão. 5 Cada turno dará assistência particular a um clã do povo que venha trazer as suas oferendas ao templo. 6 Matem o cordeiro pascal e santifiquem-se; preparem-se para dar assistência ao povo que se apresentar; sigam todas as instruções do Senhor, dadas através de Moisés."

7 O rei contribuiu com 30 000 cordeiros e cabritos, para as ofertas de celebração da Páscoa, e ainda com 3000 bois. 8 Os governantes fizeram também contribuições voluntárias aos sacerdotes e aos levitas. Hilquias, Zacarias e Jeiel, os supervisores do templo, deram aos sacerdotes 2600 ovelhas e cabritos e 300 bois, como ofertas de Páscoa. 9 Os líderes levitas, Conanias, Semaías e Netanel, com os seus irmãos Hasabias, Jeiel e Jozabade, deram 5000 cordeiros pascais e 500 bois aos levitas.

10 Quando tudo estava organizado e os sacerdotes se encontravam nos seus lugares, com os levitas formados em turnos de serviço, conforme as instruções reais, 11 os levitas começaram a matar os cordeiros pascais, apresentando o sangue aos sacerdotes, que com ele aspergiam o altar, enquanto outros levitas arrancavam a pele dos animais. 12 Amontoavam seguidamente os corpos dos animais mortos, para que cada tribo apresentasse o seu holocausto ao Senhor, como está escrito na Lei de Moisés; fizeram o mesmo com os bois. 13 Então, de acordo com as instruções da Lei, assaram os cordeiros e cozeram as ofertas sagradas em caldeiras, panelas e sertãs, apressando-se a reparti-las entre o povo, para que comesse. 14 A seguir, os levitas prepararam uma refeição para si e para os sacerdotes, pois tinham estado ocupados desde a manhã até à noite, oferecendo a gordura dos holocaustos.

15 Os cantores, os filhos de Asafe, estavam nos seus lugares, segundo as diretrizes dadas pelo rei David, Asafe, Hemã e Jedutun, o profeta do rei. Os porteiros encontravam-se nas entradas do templo e não tiveram necessidade de abandonar os seus lugares, porque as refeições foram-lhes trazidas pelos outros levitas seus irmãos.

16 Assim se completou toda a cerimónia da Páscoa num só dia; todos os holocaustos foram queimados sobre o altar do Senhor, conforme as ordens de Josias. 17 Os israelitas presentes em Jerusalém participaram nesta celebração da Páscoa, seguida da festa dos pães sem fermento, durante os sete dias posteriores. 18 Não tinha havido, desde os dias do profeta Samuel, uma celebração de Páscoa assim, nem nenhum dos reis de Israel fez uma festividade que envolvesse tantos sacerdotes, levitas, povo de Jerusalém e de todas as partes de Judá e de Israel. 19 Esta Páscoa teve lugar no décimo oitavo ano do reinado de Josias.

20 Algum tempo depois, o rei Neco do Egito levou o seu exército a combater contra os assírios em Carquemis, na margem do rio Eufrates, e Josias declarou-lhe guerra. 21 O rei Neco do Egito enviou-lhe embaixadores com a seguinte mensagem: "Não estou interessado em lutar contigo, ó rei de Judá! O meu intuito é unicamente fazer guerra ao rei da Assíria! Não te metas comigo! Deus disse-me que não me detivesse. Não interfiras com as ordens de Deus, senão serás destruído, pois Deus está do meu lado."

22 Contudo, Josias recusou alterar a sua posição e conduziu o exército à batalha, no vale de Megido. Tirou as roupas reais, para que o inimigo não o reconhecesse; Josias não quis acreditar que a mensagem de Neco era de Deus. 23 Os archeiros inimigos atingiram gravemente o rei Josias. "Tirem-me daqui, do meio da batalha!", clamou ele aos seus ajudantes.

24 Tiraram-no então do carro de combate, levaram-no para outro carro e conduziram-no a Jerusalém, onde acabou por morrer. Foi sepultado no cemitério real. Todo o reino de Judá e a população de Jerusalém choraram a sua morte.

25 Jeremias compôs uma lamentação sobre Josias. Os cantores e cantoras do templo cantaram nas exéquias fúnebres e ainda hoje se cantam as lamentações fúnebres da cerimónia do seu enterro, pois foram incorporadas no Livro da Lamentações.

26 Outros feitos de Josias e as suas louváveis ações, a forma como seguiu o livro da Lei do Senhor, 27 está tudo escrito no Livro dos Reis de Israel e de Judá.

I come not against thee this day, but against the house wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make haste: forbear thee from meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.*35.21 the house…: Heb. the house of my war 22 Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and hearkened not unto the words of Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo. 23 And the archers shot at king Josiah; and the king said to his servants, Have me away; for I am sore wounded.*35.23 wounded: Heb. made sick 24 His servants therefore took him out of that chariot, and put him in the second chariot that he had; and they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died, and was buried in one of the sepulchres of his fathers.
