1 O seu filho Jeoacaz foi escolhido pelo povo para ser o novo rei em Jerusalém. 2 Tinha 23 anos quando começou a reinar e reinou durante 3 meses em Jerusalém. 3 Foi deposto pelo rei do Egito, que impôs a Judá um tributo de 3400 quilos de prata e 34 quilos de ouro. 4 O rei do Egito colocou no seu lugar Eliaquim, irmão do rei anterior, mudando-lhe o nome para Joaquim. Entretanto, Jeoacaz foi levado pelo Faraó Neco, como prisioneiro para o Egito.

5 Tinha Joaquim 25 anos quando começou a reinar e reinou 11 anos em Jerusalém. Fez o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor, seu Deus. 6 Nabucodonozor, rei da Babilónia, atacou Jerusalém e levou-o, amarrado com cadeias de bronze para a Babilónia. 7 Nabucodonozor levou também parte das taças de ouro do templo e outros objetos, colocando-os no seu próprio templo na Babilónia.

8 O resto dos acontecimentos da vida de Joaquim, e todas as coisas horríveis que praticou, está registado no Livro dos Reis de Judá. O seu filho Jeconias subiu ao trono em seu lugar.

9 Jeconias tinha 18 anos quando começou a reinar e reinou 3 meses e 10 dias em Jerusalém. Foi um mau reinado aos olhos do Senhor. 10 Na primavera seguinte foi levado para a Babilónia pelo rei Nabucodonozor. Nessa altura, muitos tesouros do templo foram também levados para a Babilónia e Nabucodonozor designou como rei, em seu lugar, o seu parente, Zedequias.

11 Zedequias tinha 21 anos quando se tornou rei e reinou 11 anos em Jerusalém. 12 Fez o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor, seu Deus, tendo recusado dar ouvidos aos conselhos do profeta Jeremias, que lhe transmitia as mensagens do Senhor. 13 Rebelou-se contra Nabucodonozor, apesar de lhe ter jurado lealdade. Zedequias era um homem duro e obstinado, que sempre resistia às ordens do Senhor, o Deus de Israel. 14 Todas as altas personagens da nação, incluindo os sacerdotes principais, prestavam culto aos ídolos das nações vizinhas e poluíam o templo do Senhor em Jerusalém.

15 O Senhor, o Deus dos seus antepassados, enviou-lhes profetas, repetidas vezes, que os avisavam insistentemente, pois tinha compaixão do seu povo e do seu templo. 16 O povo ria-se das mensagens de Deus, desprezava a sua palavra e troçava dos profetas. Até que não foi mais possível conter a ira do Senhor; deixou de ser possível empreender uma reforma do povo.

17 O Senhor trouxe o rei da Babilónia contra ele, que matou os jovens, quando fugiam para dentro do próprio templo, não tendo piedade de ninguém, nem mesmo das moças ou dos velhos; Deus usou o rei da Babilónia para os destruir completamente. 18 Este também levou consigo todos os utensílios do templo, objetos grandes e pequenos, assim como os tesouros da casa de Deus e do palácio real. Tomou também consigo os filhos do rei e os altos dignitários. 19 O seu exército deitou fogo ao templo, derrubou as muralhas de Jerusalém, queimou as casas apalaçadas e destruiu tudo o que havia de precioso no templo. 20 Aos sobreviventes levou-os como escravos para a Babilónia, colocando-os ao seu serviço pessoal e dos seus filhos. Mais tarde, o reino da Babilónia foi vencido pelo rei da Pérsia.

21 Assim se cumpriu a palavra do Senhor, comunicada através de Jeremias, que a terra deveria repousar durante 70 anos, para compensar os anos em que o povo recusou observar os períodos de repouso*36.21 Em Israel, segundo Lv 25.1-7, a terra devia ser deixada em repouso durante um ano, de sete em sete anos, mas esta lei nem sempre foi respeitada. Segundo Lv 26.33-35, se o povo fosse levado para o exílio, devido à sua desobediência, a terra deveria ter um repouso sabático..

22 No primeiro ano do rei Ciro, da Pérsia, cumprindo-se a profecia do Senhor, pronunciada pela boca de Jeremias, o Senhor despertou o espírito deste rei, levando-o a fazer a seguinte proclamação, através de todo o reino, a qual enviou também por escrito.

23 Assim fala Ciro, rei da Pérsia,

Todos os reinos da Terra me foram dados pelo Senhor, o Deus dos céus, que me deu instruções para que lhe construísse um templo em Jerusalém, na terra de Judá. Todos os que são seu povo devem subir, e que o Senhor, o seu Deus, seja com eles!

1 Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and made him king in his father’s stead in Jerusalem. 2 Jehoahaz was twenty and three years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. 3 And the king of Egypt put him down at Jerusalem, and condemned the land in an hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.*36.3 put…: Heb. removed him 4 And the king of Egypt made Eliakim his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem, and turned his name to Jehoiakim. 5 Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God. 6 Against him came up Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and bound him in fetters, to carry him to Babylon.*36.6 fetters: or, chains 7 Nebuchadnezzar also carried of the vessels of the house of the LORD to Babylon, and put them in his temple at Babylon. 8 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and his abominations which he did, and that which was found in him, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah: and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead.*36.8 Jehoiachin: also called, Jeconiah, or, Coniah

9 Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD. 10 And when the year was expired, king Nebuchadnezzar sent, and brought him to Babylon, with the goodly vessels of the house of the LORD, and made Zedekiah his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem.*36.10 when…: Heb. at the return of the year*36.10 goodly…: Heb. vessels of desire*36.10 Zedekiah…: or, Mattaniah, his father’s brother

11 Zedekiah was one and twenty years old when he began to reign, and reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. 12 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God, and humbled not himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the mouth of the LORD. 13 And he also rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God: but he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart from turning unto the LORD God of Israel.

14 Moreover all the chief of the priests, and the people, transgressed very much after all the abominations of the heathen; and polluted the house of the LORD which he had hallowed in Jerusalem. 15 And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place:*36.15 by: Heb. by the hand of*36.15 betimes: that is, continually and carefully 16 But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.*36.16 remedy: Heb. healing 17 Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped for age: he gave them all into his hand. 18 And all the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king, and of his princes; all these he brought to Babylon. 19 And they burnt the house of God, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof. 20 And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia:*36.20 them…: Heb. the remainder from the sword 21 To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.

22 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying, 23 Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.
