1 Um dia, o grupo dos profetas veio ter com Eliseu: "Como estás a ver, as nossas habitações são muito acanhadas. 2 Achas que podemos ir até ao Jordão e construir ali melhores alojamentos?" Ele retorquiu: "Podem ir."

3 "Por favor, vem connosco", pediu-lhe um deles. Eliseu respondeu: "Pois sim."

4 Quando chegaram ao Jordão, começaram a cortar madeira. 5 A certa altura, o ferro de um machado caiu ao rio. "Oh! Senhor!", exclamou ele. "Era emprestado!"

6 "Onde foi que ele caiu?", perguntou o homem de Deus. O jovem mostrou-lhe o sítio; Eliseu cortou um pedaço de madeira e lançou-o à água; o ferro do machado veio ao de cima e ficou a flutuar! 7 "Vai apanhá-lo", disse-lhe o profeta. E assim o recuperou.

8 Numa altura em que o rei de Aram estava em guerra contra Israel, aquele rei disse aos seus chefes militares: "Vamos mobilizar as nossas tropas." E deu-lhes indicações quanto ao processo e ao local de concentração.

9 Imediatamente Eliseu avisou o rei de Israel: "Não te aproximes de tal sítio, porque os arameus estão a planear mobilizar ali o seu exército!" 10 O rei mandou um estafeta espiar se era assim como Eliseu dizia; e era verdade. Isto aconteceu não só uma vez, mas em várias ocasiões. O homem de Deus salvou dessa forma o rei, repetidas vezes, dum desastre militar.

11 O soberano arameu estava atónito. Chamou os seus chefes militares e perguntou-lhes: "Quem é que nos anda a trair? Quem é que faz saber ao rei de Israel os nossos planos?"

12 "Não somos nós, senhor", respondeu um deles. "É o profeta Eliseu que comunica ao rei de Israel até aquilo que dizes na intimidade do teu quarto!"

13 "Vão já ver onde é que ele se encontra para que envie soldados que o tragam cá!", exclamou o rei. E vieram dizer-lhe: "Eliseu está em Dotã." 14 Então, uma noite, o rei de Aram enviou um grande exército, com muitos carros e cavalos, cercar a povoação.

15 Quando, no dia seguinte, o criado do homem de Deus se levantou de manhã cedo e saiu de casa, havia tropas, cavalos e carros por toda a parte. "Ai, meu senhor, que vamos fazer agora?", gritou ele para Eliseu.

16 "Não tenhas medo, porque os que estão connosco são muito mais numerosos do que todos eles juntos!" 17 Eliseu fez então a seguinte oração: "Senhor, abre-lhe os olhos para que veja!" E o Senhor abriu os olhos do moço, que pôde ver cavalos e carros de fogo por todo o lado na montanha.

18 Quando o exército arameu avançou sobre eles, Eliseu orou: "Senhor, peço-te que os cegues." E assim aconteceu. 19 Eliseu foi ao encontro deles: "Vieram pelo caminho errado; não é esta a povoação que vos interessa. Venham comigo e levar-vos-ei ao homem que procuram." E conduziu-os a Samaria.

20 Assim que chegaram, Eliseu orou de novo: "Senhor, abre-lhes os olhos para que vejam." O Senhor assim fez e os soldados constataram que estavam em Samaria, a capital de Israel!

21 O rei de Israel, ao vê-los, gritou para Eliseu: "Senhor, mato-os? Mato-os?"

22 Eliseu respondeu: "De maneira nenhuma! Iríamos matar prisioneiros de guerra? Dá-lhes de comer e beber e manda-os embora." 23 O rei preparou-lhes uma grande festa e depois deixou-os ir ter com o seu rei. Depois disso, os comandos arameus suspenderam as investidas na terra de Israel.

24 Mais tarde, contudo, o rei Ben-Hadade de Aram mobilizou todo o seu exército e atacou Samaria. 25 Como resultado, houve uma grande fome na cidade. Passado algum tempo, a cabeça dum jumento chegou a custar um quilo de prata e um quarto de litro de esterco de pomba era vendido por uma peça de 60 gramas de prata!

26 Um dia em que o rei de Israel ia andando sobre a muralha da cidade, uma mulher chamou-o: "Ajuda-me, ó rei, meu senhor!"

27 O rei retorquiu: "Se não for o Senhor que te ajude, que poderei fazer por ti? Não tenho nada que te possa dar; nem da eira trigo, nem do lagar vinho. 28 Afinal, de que é que te queixas?" Ela respondeu: "Aqui esta mulher propôs-me que comêssemos num dia o meu filho e no outro o dela. 29 Então cozinhámos o meu filho e comemo-lo. Mas, no dia seguinte, quando lhe disse: ‘Dá cá o teu filho para que o cozinhemos’, ela escondeu-o."

30 Quando o rei ouviu isto, rasgou a roupa que tinha vestida. O povo que ali estava, perto da muralha, reparou que o soberano trazia junto ao corpo roupa interior feita de saco. 31 "Que Deus me tire a mim a vida, se eu não cortar a cabeça a Eliseu hoje mesmo!", exclamou o rei.

32 Eliseu estava reunido em casa com os anciãos de Israel, quando chegou o recado do rei que o convocava. No entanto, antes mesmo que o mensageiro chegasse, Eliseu disse aos anciãos: "Este assassino enviou-me alguém com a intenção de me matar. Quando ele aparecer, fechem-lhe a porta e não o deixem entrar, porque o seu senhor vem, com certeza, atrás dele."

33 Estava Eliseu ainda a dizer estas palavras, quando o mensageiro chegou; e o rei vinha logo atrás dele: "Foi o Senhor quem provocou toda esta miséria em que estamos!" rouquejou o rei. "Por que razão haveria eu de ficar à espera de alguma ajuda da sua parte?"

1 And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha, Behold now, the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us. 2 Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell. And he answered, Go ye. 3 And one said, Be content, I pray thee, and go with thy servants. And he answered, I will go. 4 So he went with them. And when they came to Jordan, they cut down wood. 5 But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowed.*6.5 axe head: Heb. iron 6 And the man of God said, Where fell it? 8 Then the king of Syria warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp.*6.8 camp: or, encamping 9 And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying, Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are come down. 10 And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and saved himself there, not once nor twice. 11 Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel? 12 And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king: but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber.*6.12 None: Heb. 13 And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan. 14 Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about.*6.14 great: Heb. heavy 15 And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?*6.15 the servant: or, the minister 16 And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. 17 And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. 18 And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

19 And Elisha said unto them, This is not the way, neither is this the city: follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek. But he led them to Samaria.*6.19 follow…: Heb. come ye after me 20 And it came to pass, when they were come into Samaria, that Elisha said, LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria. 21 And the king of Israel said unto Elisha, when he saw them, My father, shall I smite them? shall I smite them? 22 And he answered, Thou shalt not smite them: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master. 23 And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.

24 And it came to pass after this, that Ben-hadad king of Syria gathered all his host, and went up, and besieged Samaria. 25 And there was a great famine in Samaria: and, behold, they besieged it, until an ass’s head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a cab of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver. 26 And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, there cried a woman unto him, saying, Help, my lord, O king. 27 And he said, If the LORD do not help thee, whence shall I help thee? out of the barnfloor, or out of the winepress?*6.27 If…: or, Let not the LORD save thee 28 And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy son, that we may eat him to day, and we will eat my son to morrow. 29 So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him: and she hath hid her son.*6.29 next: Heb. other

30 And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he rent his clothes; and he passed by upon the wall, and the people looked, and, behold, he had sackcloth within upon his flesh. 31 Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day. 32 But Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him: but ere the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head? look, when the messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him? 33 And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; what should I wait for the LORD any longer?
