1 O rei de Aram tinha uma grande admiração por Naamã, chefe do seu exército. Porque através de Naamã, o Senhor tinha dado muitas e gloriosas vitórias aos exércitos arameus. Por isso, era considerado um grande herói e muito respeitado. No entanto, era leproso.

2 As tropas de Aram tinham invadido, certa vez, a terra de Israel; entre os cativos que levaram, encontrava-se uma menina que ficou ao serviço da mulher de Naamã. 3 Um dia, a menina disse à sua senhora: "Bem gostaria que o meu senhor fosse ver o profeta na Samaria. Haveria de curá-lo da lepra!"

4 Naamã contou ao rei o que a menina dissera. 5 "Sim, vai lá ver esse profeta", disse-lhe. "Escreverei uma carta para apresentares ao rei de Israel." Naamã partiu, levando consigo 340 quilos de prata, 6000 peças de dinheiro em ouro e 10 mudas de roupa. 6 A carta para o rei de Israel dizia assim: "O homem que é portador desta carta é o meu súbdito Naamã; o que eu pretendo é que trates da cura da sua lepra."

7 Quando o rei de Israel leu a missiva, rasgou a roupa que trazia vestida e disse: "Este homem manda-me um leproso para que eu o cure! Sou eu Deus para poder dar vida ou matar? Ele está é a arranjar uma desculpa para nos invadir de novo."

8 Quando o profeta Eliseu soube do aperto em que o rei se encontrava, mandou-lhe uma mensagem: "Porque é que estás tão preocupado? Manda Naamã vir ter comigo; ele ficará a saber que há um verdadeiro homem de Deus aqui na terra de Israel."

9 Naamã chegou com os seus carros e cavalos em frente da casa de Eliseu. 10 Este enviou-lhe um mensageiro dizer-lhe para ir lavar-se sete vezes no rio Jordão, que ficaria sarado de qualquer vestígio de lepra.

11 No entanto, muito irritado, Naamã resolveu ir-se embora. "Vejam bem!", disse ele. "Sempre pensei que, pelo menos, viria falar comigo, poria a mão sobre as partes leprosas, invocaria o nome do Senhor, seu Deus, e eu ficaria curado! 12 Não são os rios Abana e Farpar, de Damasco, muito melhores do que todos os rios de Israel juntos? Se a questão era lavar-me num rio, poderia muito bem fazê-lo na minha terra e curar-me." E retirou-se indignado.

13 Os seus ajudantes tentaram que reconsiderasse: "Se o profeta te tivesse pedido para fazer uma coisa muito difícil, não a terias feito? Então porque não o fazes, se te disse para te lavares que ficarias curado?" 14 Naamã aceitou descer até ao rio Jordão; mergulhou sete vezes, como Eliseu lhe dissera, e a sua carne ficou como a de um menino; ficou curado.

15 Voltou então com toda a sua comitiva, para ir falar de novo com o homem de Deus, e Naamã disse: "Agora sei que em todo o mundo não há Deus verdadeiro senão em Israel. Peço-te que aceites estes presentes."

16 "Tão certo como vive o Senhor, que não os aceitarei." Naamã insistiu para que os aceitasse e ele recusou firmemente.

17 "Está bem", disse Naamã. "Mas peço-te que me dês terra correspondente a dois carregamentos de mula para levar comigo, porque daqui em diante nunca mais oferecerei holocaustos a outro deus senão ao Senhor. 18 Contudo, que o Senhor me perdoe, quando o meu senhor, o meu rei, entrar no templo do deus Rimom para o adorar e se apoiar no meu braço, que o Senhor me perdoe se eu também me inclinar."

19 "Podes ir em paz", disse-lhe Eliseu. E Naamã partiu.

20 Geazi, o ajudante de Eliseu, disse para consigo: "O meu senhor não devia ter deixado este indivíduo partir sem ter ficado com alguns dos seus presentes. Quem há de ir atrás dele, para ver se ainda apanho alguma coisa, serei eu."

21 Geazi partiu atrás de Naamã. Quando este o viu aproximar-se, saiu do carro e foi ao encontro de Geazi. "Há alguma novidade?" perguntou-lhe.

22 "Não, vai tudo bem", respondeu Geazi. "O meu senhor mandou-me vir ter contigo, porque chegaram dois jovens profetas, das colinas de Efraim, e ele gostaria de lhes dar 34 quilos de prata e duas mudas de roupa."

23 "Tens aqui 68 quilos", respondeu Naamã. Deu-lhe ainda dois fatos caros e pôs o dinheiro em dois sacos, mandando dois servos seus carregarem os presentes, na companhia de Geazi. 24 No entanto, quando chegaram à colina onde Eliseu vivia, Geazi pegou nos presentes e mandou os servos embora. Depois escondeu o dinheiro na sua casa.

25 Ao apresentar-se novamente ao seu senhor, Eliseu perguntou-lhe: "Onde é que estiveste, Geazi?" Respondeu-lhe: "Em sítio nenhum!"

26 "Não estás a ver que o meu pensamento te acompanhou, quando Naamã desceu do carro para vir ao teu encontro? Seria esta situação própria para arranjares dinheiro, roupa, olivais, vinhas, cordeiros, bois e servos? 27 Visto que fizeste tal coisa, a lepra de Naamã ficará sobre ti e sobre os teus filhos, e sobre os teus descendentes para sempre!" Geazi saiu dali leproso, com a pele branca como neve.

8 And it was so, when Elisha the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast thou rent thy clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.

9 So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariot, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha. 10 And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean. 11 But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper.*5.11 I thought: Heb. So he turned and went away in a rage.*5.12 Abana: or, Amana 13 And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean? 14 Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.

15 And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy servant. 16 But he said, As the LORD liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take it; but he refused. 17 And Naaman said, Shall there not then, I pray thee, be given to thy servant two mules’ burden of earth? for thy servant will henceforth offer neither burnt offering nor sacrifice unto other gods, but unto the LORD. 18 In this thing the LORD pardon thy servant, that when my master goeth into the house of Rimmon to worship there, and he leaneth on my hand, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon: when I bow down myself in the house of Rimmon, the LORD pardon thy servant in this thing. 19 And he said unto him, Go in peace. 20 But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master hath spared Naaman this Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought: but, as the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him. 21 So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running after him, he lighted down from the chariot to meet him, and said, Is all well?*5.21 Is…: Heb. Is there peace? 22 And he said, All is well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there be come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of garments. 23 And Naaman said, Be content, take two talents. And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bare them before him. 24 And when he came to the tower, he took them from their hand, and bestowed them in the house: and he let the men go, and they departed.*5.24 tower: or, secret place 25 But he went in, and stood before his master. And Elisha said unto him, Whence comest thou, Gehazi? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants? 27 The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.
