1 Um dia, a mulher de um membro do grupo dos profetas veio comunicar a Eliseu a morte do marido. "Era um homem que temia ao Senhor", afirmou ela. Ele tivera de pedir emprestado algum dinheiro. Se não o pagasse, o credor viria tomar-lhe os seus dois filhos como escravos.

2 "E que queres tu que eu faça?", perguntou Eliseu. "Diz-me lá, o que tens em casa?" "Nada! Tudo o que tenho é um jarro com azeite", respondeu-lhe.

3 "Então vai pedir emprestadas muitas vasilhas aos teus vizinhos. 4 Volta para casa, fecha-te lá, com os teus filhos, e começa a encher todos esses recipientes, pondo-os de lado à medida que estiverem cheios."

5 Ela assim fez. Os filhos iam-lhe trazendo vasilhas; ela ia-as enchendo, uma após outra. 6 Em breve todos os recipientes ficaram cheios. "Tragam mais vasilhas", disse aos filhos. "Já não há mais!", responderam. E nessa altura o azeite parou.

7 Quando foi contar ao homem de Deus o que tinha acontecido, ele respondeu-lhe: "Agora vai vender o azeite e paga a dívida e ainda te ficará bastante dinheiro para viveres com os teus filhos."

8 Um dia, Eliseu foi para Sunem. Uma mulher rica que ali vivia convidou-o para tomar uma refeição. A partir de então, sempre que por ali passava, parava para comer. 9 A mulher disse ao marido: "Tenho a certeza de que este homem que aqui vem de tempos a tempos é um santo homem de Deus. 10 Vamos preparar-lhe um quarto no sótão. Podemos lá pôr uma cama, uma mesa, uma cadeira e um candeeiro; ficará assim com um lugar certo para repousar sempre que por aqui passar."

11 Uma vez, o profeta estava a descansar no quarto. 12 E disse para o seu criado Geazi: "Diz à mulher que preciso de lhe falar." Quando ela apareceu, 13 pediu de novo a Geazi: "Explica-lhe que apreciamos muito a sua hospitalidade e pergunta-lhe o que podemos fazer em seu favor. Quererá ela, por exemplo, que apresente qualquer assunto junto do rei ou do comandante do exército?" Ela respondeu: "Não preciso de nada. Eu vivo bem, no meio da minha gente."

14 "O que poderíamos fazer por ela?", perguntou Eliseu de novo a Geazi, mais tarde. Por fim, este sugeriu: "Eles não têm filhos e o marido já é um homem idoso."

15 "Chama-a lá outra vez." Quando ela veio, o profeta disse-lhe, enquanto ela esperava à entrada do quarto: 16 "No ano que vem, na altura própria, terás um filho!" Ela exclamou: "Ó homem de Deus, peço-te que não me mintas dessa maneira!" 17 O certo é que isso aconteceu. A mulher em breve concebeu e teve depois um bebé, um rapaz, tal como Eliseu lhe prometera.

18 Um dia, quando o seu filho já era crescido, decidiu sair de casa para ir ter com o pai que se encontrava a trabalhar junto dos ceifeiros. 19 A certa altura, começou a queixar-se de fortes dores de cabeça: "Ai, a minha cabeça! Ai, a minha cabeça!", gritava ele. O pai disse a um dos servos: "Leva-o à mãe, que está em casa."

20 A mãe pô-lo sobre os joelhos e consolava-o, mas por volta do meio-dia acabou por falecer. 21 A mulher levou-o para cima, para o quarto do homem de Deus, deitou-o na cama e fechou a porta. 22 Depois, enviou um recado ao marido: "Manda um dos criados e um jumento; tenho de ir chamar o homem de Deus e voltar."

23 "Porque precisas de ir hoje? Não é a festa da lua nova, nem dia de descanso." Ela insistiu: "É muito importante que vá."

24 Albardou o jumento e disse para o criado: "Depressa! Não abrandes a marcha, a menos que eu to diga."

25 Quando já estavam próximos do monte Carmelo, Eliseu viu-a à distância e disse para Geazi: "Vem aí aquela mulher de Sunem. 26 Corre ao seu encontro e pergunta-lhe o que é que se passa. Pergunta-lhe se o marido e o filho estão bem." Quando este a encontrou, ela respondeu a Geazi: "Tudo vai bem."

27 No entanto, quando chegou junto de Eliseu, no monte, prostrou-se com o rosto no chão e agarrou-se aos seus pés. Geazi aproximou-se para tentar afastá-la, mas o homem de Deus disse-lhe: "Deixa-a em paz; a sua alma está carregada de amargura e o Senhor não me disse o que se passa."

28 Depois ela falou: "Foste tu quem me disse que haveria de ter um filho e eu pedi-te que não me enganasses!"

29 Eliseu ordenou a Geazi: "Corre, vai já buscar o meu bordão e parte! Não saúdes a ninguém pelo caminho, nem respondas a ninguém. Chegando lá, põe o bordão sobre o rosto do menino."

30 Mas a mãe disse: "Tão certo como vive o Senhor e vive a tua alma, que não saio daqui enquanto não fores comigo." Então Eliseu acompanhou-a.

31 Geazi partira à frente; chegando lá a casa, pôs o bordão sobre o rosto do menino. Contudo, nada aconteceu; não houve sinal de vida. Por isso, voltou. Encontrando-se com Eliseu, disse-lhe: "A criança ainda está morta."

32 Quando Eliseu chegou, a criança estava efetivamente morta, deitada na cama do profeta. 33 O profeta entrou, fechou a porta atrás de si e orou ao Senhor. 34 Depois deitou-se sobre o corpo do menino, pondo a boca na dele, encostando os olhos aos dele e colando as mãos às da criança. O corpo do menino começou a aquecer de novo. 35 Então desceu e andou pela casa algum tempo; tornando a subir, estendeu-se novamente sobre a criança. Desta vez ela espirrou sete vezes e abriu os olhos.

36 O profeta chamou Geazi: "Diz à mãe que venha cá!" Quando ela apareceu, disse-lhe: "Aqui está o teu filho." 37 Ela prostrou-se aos seus pés. Depois pegou no menino e desceu.

38 Eliseu voltou para Gilgal, mas havia fome na terra. Estava um dia a ensinar os novos profetas, quando disse para Geazi: "Põe a panela grande ao lume e faz um caldo de verduras para estes comerem."

39 Um dos rapazes foi ao campo apanhar alguns legumes e regressou com umas quantas plantas selvagens. Preparou-as, cortou-as e pô-las na panela, sem se dar conta de que não eram comestíveis. 40 Começando a comer, logo exclamaram: "Há veneno neste caldo!"

41 "Tragam-me farinha", disse Eliseu. Lançou-a na panela e acrescentou: "Agora já não há perigo. Podem continuar a comer!" E nada de mal lhes aconteceu.

42 Um dia, um homem de Baal-Salisa trouxe ao homem de Deus, Eliseu, um saco de cereais frescos e vinte pães de cevada feitos das primeiras espigas da sua ceifa. Eliseu mandou a Geazi que com isso alimentasse os jovens profetas.

43 "O quê!", exclamou ele. "Alimentar cem homens só com isto?" Mas Eliseu foi firme: "Dá-lhes isso a comer, porque o Senhor diz que haverá bastante para toda a gente e ainda há de sobejar!" 44 E na verdade, tal como o Senhor dissera, houve suficiente para todos e ainda sobejou.

And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil. 3 Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.*4.3 borrow not…: or, scant not 4 And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full. 5 So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out. 6 And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed. 7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.*4.7 debt: or, creditor

8 And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.*4.8 it fell on a day: Heb. there was a day*4.8 constrained him: Heb. laid hold on him 9 And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually. 10 Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither. 11 And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, and lay there. 12 And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him. 13 And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people. 14 And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old. 15 And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door. 16 And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid.*4.16 season: Heb. set time 17 And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.

18 And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers. 19 And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said to a lad, Carry him to his mother. 20 And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died. 21 And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out. 22 And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again. 23 And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to day? it is neither new moon, nor sabbath. And it came to pass, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold, yonder is that Shunammite: 26 Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well. 27 And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul is vexed within her: and the LORD hath hid it from me, and hath not told me.*4.27 him…: Heb. by his feet*4.27 vexed: Heb. bitter 28 Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me? 29 Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child. 30 And the mother of the child said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her. 31 And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked.*4.31 hearing: Heb. attention 32 And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed. 33 He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the LORD. 34 And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm. 35 Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.*4.35 to and fro: Heb. once hither and once thither 36 And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son. 37 Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out.

38 And Elisha came again to Gilgal: and there was a dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and seethe pottage for the sons of the prophets. 39 And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered thereof wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred them into the pot of pottage: for they knew them not. 40 So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof. 41 But he said, Then bring meal. And he cast it into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot.*4.41 harm: Heb. evil thing

42 And there came a man from Baal-shalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the husk thereof. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may eat.*4.42 the husk…: or, his scrip, or, garment 43 And his servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the LORD, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof. 44 So he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of the LORD.
