1 Representantes de todas as tribos de Israel vieram ter com David a Hebrom, oferecer-lhe a garantia da sua lealdade: "Somos do mesmo sangue que tu", disseram. 2 "Mesmo quando Saul era o rei, tu eras o nosso verdadeiro chefe. Foi a ti que o Senhor disse: ‘Serás o pastor do meu povo de Israel. Serás o seu rei.’ " 3 Então David fez uma aliança diante do Senhor com os anciãos de Israel ali em Hebrom e eles consagraram-no rei de Israel.

4,5 David era rei de Judá havia 7 anos e meio, desde a idade de 30 anos. Governou durante 33 anos em Jerusalém como soberano tanto de Israel como de Judá. Ao todo o seu reinado foi de 40 anos.

6 David decidiu levar as suas tropas até Jerusalém para combater os jebuseus que ali viviam. "Nunca entrarás aqui", tinham-lhe dito. "Até os nossos cegos e coxos poderiam enfrentar-te!" Porque pensavam que estavam muito seguros. 7 No entanto, David e os seus homens derrotaram-nos e capturaram a fortaleza de Sião, agora chamada Cidade de David.

8 Quando a mensagem insultuosa dos defensores da cidade chegou ao conhecimento de David, este dissera aos soldados: "Subam através do túnel de abastecimento de água à cidade e destruam esses tais cegos e coxos que eu aborreço." E esta é a origem do ditado "Nem cego nem coxo entrará aqui!" 9 David estabeleceu-se na fortaleza de Sião; por isso, passou a chamar-se Cidade de David. Começando no velho bairro da cidade chamado Milo, empreendeu uma série de construções, do norte em direção ao centro da cidade. 10 David tornou-se cada vez mais famoso e poderoso, porque o Senhor, o Deus dos exércitos, estava com ele.

11 O rei Hirão, de Tiro, enviou mensageiros a David e muita madeira de cedro, carpinteiros e pedreiros para a construção de um palácio para David. 12 David deu-se conta da razão por que o Senhor o tinha feito rei e tinha tornado o seu reino tão prestigiado: por amor ao seu povo.

13 Após se ter mudado de Hebrom para Jerusalém, David teve outras mulheres e concubinas, de quem teve muitos filhos e filhas. 14 São estes os que lhe nasceram em Jerusalém: Samua, Sobabe, Natã, Salomão, 15 Ibar, Elisua, Nefegue, Jafia, 16 Elisama, Eliada e Elifelete.

17 Quando os filisteus ouviram que David tinha sido consagrado rei de Israel, mobilizaram as suas forças e saíram para o capturar; ao tomar conhecimento, David refugiou-se na fortaleza. 18 Os filisteus chegaram e espalharam-se pelo vale de Refaim. 19 David perguntou ao Senhor: "Deverei sair e lutar contra eles? Entregá-los-ás nas minhas mãos?" E o Senhor respondeu: "Sim, podes avançar, porque hei de entregá-los."

20 David atacou-os em Baal-Perazim e derrotou-os. E exclamou: "O Senhor abriu uma brecha como num dique para derrubar os meus inimigos diante de mim!" Por isso, chamou àquele lugar Baal-Perazim (Senhor das brechas). 21 Por essa altura, David e as suas tropas confiscaram muitos ídolos que os filisteus tinham abandonado.

22 Os filisteus tornaram a tomar posições de luta contra os israelitas e espalharam-se pelo vale de Refaim. 23 Quando David voltou a perguntar ao Senhor o que devia fazer, foi esta a resposta: "Desta vez não os ataques de frente. Vai por detrás e aparece-lhes por entre as amoreiras. 24 Quando ouvires um barulho como de gente marchando por de cima das copas das amoreiras, então ataca! Pois esse será o sinal de que o Senhor irá à tua frente e destruirá o exército dos filisteus." 25 David fez segundo as instruções dadas pelo Senhor e destruiu os filisteus desde Geba a Gezer.

1 Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. 2 Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel. 3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel.

4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. 5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.

6 And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in hither.*5.6 thinking…: or, saying David shall not, etc 7 Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David. 8 And David said on that day, Whosoever getteth up to the gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind, that are hated of David’s soul, he shall be chief and captain. 11 And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons: and they built David an house.*5.11 masons: Heb. hewers of the stone of the wall 12 And David perceived that the LORD had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel’s sake.

13 And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron: and there were yet sons and daughters born to David. 14 And these be the names of those that were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shammua, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, 15 Ibhar also, and Elishua, and Nepheg, and Japhia, 16 And Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphalet.

17 But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold. 18 The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. 19 And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand. 20 And David came to Baal-perazim, and David smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baal-perazim.*5.20 Baal-perazim: that is, the plain of breaches 21 And there they left their images, and David and his men burned them.*5.21 burned…: or, took them away

22 And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. 23 And when David enquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees. 24 And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines. 25 And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer.*5.25 Geba: also called, Gibeon
