1 Ouçam-me, vocês, gordas vacas de Basã que vivem na Samaria, vocês, mulheres que encorajam os maridos a roubar os pobres e a esmagar os explorados, vocês que nunca estão satisfeitas e que dizem aos maridos que querem beber mais e mais! 2 O Senhor Deus jurou pela sua santidade: "Eis que virá o tempo em que vos porão ganchos nos narizes e vos levarão como gado; o último será igualmente levado com anzóis! 3 Serão expulsos das vossas belas casas e lançados fora pelas fendas das paredes destruídas, na direção de Hermon." É o Senhor quem o diz.

4 "Venham então e continuem a fazer sacrifícios aos ídolos, em Betel e em Gilgal. Continuem a desobedecer que os vossos pecados se vão amontoando. Sacrifiquem cada manhã e tragam os dízimos duas vezes por semana. 5 Prossigam nos ritos de louvor e deem ofertas voluntárias. Hão de sentir-se orgulhosos e falarão de tudo isso por toda a parte, diz o Senhor Deus.

6 Fiz-vos passar fome, diz o Senhor Deus, mas não serviu de nada; nem mesmo assim se converteram a mim. 7 Arruinei as vossas culturas, retendo as chuvas três meses antes das colheitas. Fiz chover numa cidade e não na outra. Enquanto um campo recebeu chuva, o outro ficou seco e as culturas morreram. 8 Gentes de duas ou três cidades seriam capazes de fazer uma longa caminhada para obter uma gota de água, indo àquela onde tinha chovido, mas chegando lá não encontrarão nenhuma de sobra. Pois nem mesmo assim se convertem, diz o Senhor.

9 Mandei-vos o míldio e outras doenças às vossas vinhas e às vossas culturas agrícolas; os gafanhotos comeram as figueiras e as oliveiras. E nem mesmo assim se voltaram para mim, diz o Senhor.

10 Mandei-vos pragas, como as do Egito, há muito tempo. Matei os vossos mancebos na guerra e deixei que levassem os vossos cavalos. O mau cheiro dos mortos era terrível. E mesmo assim recusaram converter-se.

11 Destruí algumas das vossas cidades, como tinha feito com Sodoma e com Gomorra; os que escaparam eram como pedaços de madeira meio queimados, tirados dum fogo. E mesmo assim não voltaram para mim, diz o Senhor.

12 Por isso, trarei todos esses males de que vos tenho falado. Prepara-te, pois, para te encontrares com o teu Deus, ó Israel!"

13 Foi ele quem formou as montanhas e fez os ventos; ele conhece todos os vossos pensamentos; faz da manhã trevas e esmaga as montanhas debaixo dos seus pés. Senhor, o Deus dos exércitos, é o seu nome.
