1 Ouçam esta canção que vou cantar, como lamentação sobre o povo de Israel. 2 "A bela nação de Israel jaz alquebrada, esmagada sobre o chão e ninguém a pode levantar. Não há ninguém que a ajude. Deixam-na morrer sozinha."

3 Por isso, diz o Senhor Deus: "A cidade que enviar mil homens à guerra, apenas verá de volta cem. E a outra, dos cem que tiver enviado, apenas verá regressar dez com vida."

4 O Senhor diz ao povo de Israel: "Busquem-me e vivam! 5 Não vão atrás dos ídolos de Betel e de Gilgal, ou de Berseba; o povo de Gilgal será levado em cativeiro, e o de Betel certamente que será desfeito em nada."

6 Procurem o Senhor e vivam! Doutra forma, lançar-se-á como um fogo sobre Israel e consumi-lo-á! Nenhum dos ídolos de Betel poderá impedir tal coisa.

7 Ó gente pervertida! Fazem da justiça uma poção bem amarga que os pobres e oprimidos são obrigados a engolir; honestidade e retidão são ficções sem sentido algum para vocês!

8 Procurem aquele que criou as constelações de Plêiades e Orion; que faz das trevas manhã e do dia noite; que chama as águas dos oceanos e as derrama em chuva sobre a Terra. O seu nome é Senhor. 9 Faz vir súbita e violenta destruição sobre os poderosos, anulando todas as defesas.

10 Como vocês odeiam os juízes retos! Como desprezam os que falam verdade! 11 Pisam com os pés o pobre e roubam-no até ao mais pequeno tostão com as taxas iníquas da usura. É por isso que constroem vivendas luxuosas, construídas com pedras lavradas, que nunca chegarão a habitar; também não beberão o vinho das esplêndidas vinhas que plantaram.

12 Muito graves são os vossos pecados; conheço-os todos muito bem. Vocês são inimigos de tudo o que seja o bem; respiram suborno por toda a parte; recusam fazer justiça aos pobres. 13 Por isso, todo aquele que for sábio guardará silêncio, porque é um tempo muito hostil.

14 Busquem o que é reto, fujam da injustiça e vivam! Nessa altura, o Senhor, o Deus dos exércitos, será verdadeiramente o vosso ajudador, como pretendem que seja. 15 Odeiem o mal e amem o bem! Reformem os vossos tribunais, de forma a que se transformem em verdadeiros palácios de justiça! Talvez ainda o Senhor, o Deus dos exércitos, tenha misericórdia do resto do seu povo.

16 Por essa razão, assim vos diz o Senhor, o Deus dos exércitos: "Haverá choro em todos os caminhos e em todas as ruas. Chamem os lavradores para chorar convosco; mandem vir pranteadores profissionais para também lamentarem. 17 Haverá tristeza e choro em todas as vinhas, porque passarei por elas para as desfazer."

18 Se disserem: "Ah! Se viesse o dia do Senhor! Então Deus nos livraria de todos os nossos inimigos!" Mas não fazem sequer ideia do que desejam. Esse dia do Senhor não será de luz, mas antes de escuridão. 19 Nesse dia, serão como alguém que é perseguido por um leão e que acaba por cair na frente dum urso esfomeado, ou como uma pessoa que está num quarto escuro, procurando a saída, e põe a mão sobre uma serpente. 20 Sim, esse dia do Senhor será um dia de escuridão e sem esperança alguma.

21 "Aborreço profundamente as vossas celebrações religiosas; também não suporto as vossas assembleias solenes. 22 Não aceitarei os vossos holocaustos e sacrifícios de gratidão, nem sequer olharei para os vossos sacrifícios de paz. 23 Calem os vossos hinos de louvor, pois não passam de mero barulho aos meus ouvidos. Não escutarei a vossa música, por muito bonita que possa ser. 24 O que eu quero ver é a justiça correndo como o poderoso caudal de um rio, como uma torrente abundante de boas obras.

25 Ofereceram-me sacrifícios durante 40 anos no deserto, ó casa de Israel, 26 mas o que vos interessava eram os vossos deuses pagãos, as imagens de Sicute, vosso deus-rei, e Quium*5.26 Sicute e Quium seriam divindades, provavelmente de origem assíria., o vosso deus das estrelas, e todas as imagens que fizeram para vós mesmos. 27 Por isso, vou mandar-vos para o cativeiro, lá bem para o oriente de Damasco", diz o Senhor, cujo nome é Deus dos exércitos.

1 Hear ye this word which I take up against you, even a lamentation, O house of Israel. 2 The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is forsaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up. 3 For thus saith the Lord GOD; The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred, and that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten, to the house of Israel.

4 For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live: 5 But seek not Beth-el, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beer-sheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Beth-el shall come to nought. 6 Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Beth-el. 7 Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth, 8 Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name: 9 That strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong, so that the spoiled shall come against the fortress.*5.9 spoiled: Heb. spoil 10 They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly. 11 Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.*5.11 pleasant…: Heb. vineyards of desire 12 For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.*5.12 a bribe: or, a ransom 13 Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time. 14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken. 15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

16 Therefore the LORD, the God of hosts, the Lord, saith thus; Wailing shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing. 17 And in all vineyards shall be wailing: for I will pass through thee, saith the LORD. 18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light. 19 As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him. 20 Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?

21 I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.*5.21 in…: or, your holy days 22 Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.*5.22 peace…: or, thank offerings 23 Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols. 24 But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.*5.24 run: Heb. roll 25 Have ye offered unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel? 26 But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.*5.26 the tabernacle…: or, Siccuth your king 27 Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the LORD, whose name is The God of hosts.
