1 Quando forem à guerra e virem na vossa frente um grande número de cavaleiros e de carros de combate, um exército muito superior ao vosso, não se atemorizem! O Senhor, vosso Deus, está convosco, o mesmo Deus que vos trouxe com segurança para fora do Egito. 2 Antes de começarem a batalha haverá um sacerdote que se porá diante do exército de Israel 3 e dirá: "Ouçam-me, ó gente de Israel! Não desfaleçam nem tenham medo! Não entrem em pânico nem se deixem atemorizar por causa deles! 4 Porque o Senhor, vosso Deus, vai convosco. Ele combaterá contra os vossos inimigos e vos dará a vitória!"

5 Então os oficiais do exército dirigir-se-ão aos seus homens desta maneira: "Há alguém que acaba de construir uma casa nova, mas que ainda a não consagrou? Então que volte para casa. Porque pode morrer na batalha e seria outra pessoa que a consagraria. 6 Algum de vocês plantou uma vinha e ainda não comeu do seu fruto? Se sim, que vá para casa! Poderá vir a morrer na batalha e será uma outra pessoa a comê-lo. 7 Alguém aqui está noivo? Pois bem, que volte para casa e se case! Pode acontecer morrer na luta e ser um outro homem a casar com a noiva. 8 E agora, está alguém com medo? Se for o caso, volte já para casa antes de comunicar esse terror aos outros!" 9 Quando os oficiais tiverem terminado de falar aos soldados, anunciarão os nomes dos comandantes de batalhão.

10 Quando chegarem junto de uma cidade para atacá-la, primeiro ofereçam-lhe tréguas. 11 Se aceitar e vos abrir as portas, nessa altura toda a população se tornará vossa tributária e vos servirá. 12 Se recusar e não aceitar a vossa proposta de paz, deverão então sitiá-la. 13 Quando o Senhor, vosso Deus, vo-la tiver dado, matem todos os habitantes do sexo masculino; 14 poderão guardar para vós as mulheres, as crianças, o gado e o que tiver sido saqueado. 15 Estas instruções aplicam-se somente a cidades distantes, não às cidades propriamente da terra prometida.

16 Porque nestas cidades dentro dos limites da terra prometida não deverão poupar seja quem for; 17 terão de destruir tudo o que tem vida. Destruam completamente os hititas, os amorreus, os cananeus, os perizeus, os heveus e os jebuseus. É isto que o Senhor, vosso Deus, manda. 18 E o objetivo desta ordem é impedir que o povo da terra que viesse a ficar vivo vos engane e vos leve a adorar os seus ídolos e a participar nos seus costumes abomináveis, fazendo-vos pecar profundamente contra o Senhor, vosso Deus.

19 Quando sitiarem uma cidade, não destruam as árvores de fruto. Comam de toda a fruta que vos apetecer; mas não deitem abaixo as árvores. Não se tratam de inimigos que seja preciso abater! 20 Contudo, árvores que não deem fruto que sirvam para a alimentação, essas sim, podem cortar. Usem-nas até para montar o assalto à cidade, construindo baluartes, por exemplo.

5 And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it. 6 And what man is he that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? let him also go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it.*20.6 eaten…: Heb. made it common 7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her. 8 And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart faint as well as his heart.*20.8 faint: Heb. melt 9 And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall make captains of the armies to lead the people.*20.9 to lead…: Heb. to be in the head of the people

10 When thou comest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it. 11 And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee. 12 And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it: 13 And when the LORD thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword: 14 But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.*20.14 take: Heb. spoil 15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations. 16 But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth: 17 But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee: 18 That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the LORD your God.

19 When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them: for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man’s life) to employ them in the siege:*20.19 for the…: or, for, O man, the tree of the field is to be employed in the siege*20.19 to employ…: Heb. to go from before thee 20 Only the trees which thou knowest that they be not trees for meat, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it be subdued.*20.20 it…: Heb. it come down
