1 Quando o Senhor, vosso Deus, tiver destruído os povos que vocês desarraigarão, quando passarem a viver nas cidades e nas casas deles, 2 terão de destacar três cidades de refúgio para que alguém que por simples acidente tenha matado outra pessoa possa para lá fugir e estar em segurança. 3 Para tal, dividam o território em três zonas, cada uma com a sua cidade, e com as vias que conduzam até elas em bom estado.

4 Se alguém matar sem intenção, e sem que houvesse prévia hostilidade, outra pessoa, o assassino pode fugir para qualquer uma destas cidades e aí encontrar asilo. 5 Por exemplo: um homem vai a um bosque na companhia do seu vizinho para cortar lenha. A certa altura, o ferro do machado escapa-se do cabo e mata o companheiro. Aquele homem poderá fugir então para uma dessas cidades e ficará seguro. 6 Se aparecer alguém pretendendo vingar a morte do seu vizinho, não poderá fazê-lo. Essas cidades deverão estar suficientemente acessíveis a toda a gente. Doutra forma, um vingador exaltado pode apanhar e liquidar o indivíduo que matou outro sem ser por mal, o que não deveria acontecer, pois não o matou deliberadamente. 7 Por isso, te ordenei que escolhesses três cidades de refúgio.

8 Se o Senhor, vosso Deus, alargar as vossas fronteiras, como prometeu aos vossos antepassados, e vos der toda a terra que garantiu dar-vos, 9 e ele fará isso na condição de obedecerem a todos os mandamentos que vos dou hoje, de amarem o Senhor, vosso Deus, e de andarem nos seus caminhos, então terão de destacar mais três outras cidades de refúgio. 10 Dessa forma, impedirão a morte de gente inocente e não se tornarão responsáveis por um derramamento injusto de sangue.

11 Mas se alguém odeia uma pessoa e, armando-lhe uma emboscada, lhe aparece de repente à frente e a mata, se depois vier a fugir para uma das cidades de refúgio, 12 os anciãos da sua cidade de origem mandarão buscá-lo e trazê-lo para casa e entregá-lo-ão ao vingador da morte daquele que assassinou, para ser executado. 13 Não tenham pena dele. Expurguem de Israel todos os assassinos. Só assim tudo vos correrá bem.

14 Quando chegarem à terra que o Senhor, vosso Deus, vos dá não se esqueçam de que não deverão roubar terra ao vosso vizinho, deslocando as marcas dos limites do seu campo.

15 Nunca culpem ninguém com base numa só testemunha. Toda a acusação deve ser confirmada por duas ou três testemunhas. 16 Se alguém der um falso testemunho, dizendo que viu outra pessoa praticar uma ação má, mas sem que isso seja verdade, 17 deverão ser ambos trazidos à presença dos sacerdotes e dos juízes em exercício na altura, perante o Senhor. 18 Será então interrogado e se virem que a testemunha está a mentir, 19 o seu castigo terá de ser aquele que o outro receberia se fosse verdade a acusação. Dessa forma, limparão o mal do vosso meio. 20 Todos quantos ouvirem o que aconteceu terão medo de dizer mentiras ao testemunhar contra outros. 21 Não tenham misericórdia de uma falsa testemunha. Vida por vida, olho por olho, dente por dente, mão por mão, pé por pé; será este o vosso critério em tais casos.

1 When the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;*19.1 succeedest: Heb. inheritest, or, possessest 2 Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it. 3 Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither.

4 And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;*19.4 in…: Heb. from yesterday the third day 5 As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live:*19.5 head: Heb. iron*19.5 helve: Heb. wood*19.5 lighteth…: Heb. findeth 6 Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.*19.6 slay…: Heb. smite him in life*19.6 in…: Heb. from yesterday the third day 7 Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee. 8 And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers; 9 If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three: 10 That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.

11 But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:*19.11 mortally: Heb. in life 12 Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die. 13 Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.

14 Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour’s landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.

15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.

16 If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;*19.16 that…: or, falling away 17 Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days; 18 And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother; 19 Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you. 20 And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you. 21 And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
