1 Por isso, deixemos as noções elementares da doutrina cristã e avancemos no sentido do amadurecimento. Não fiquemos como que a lançar de novo os mesmos alicerces, do arrependimento do pecado e das obras que levam à morte, da necessidade da fé em Deus, 2 do ensino referente às lavagens, da imposição das mãos, da ressurreição dos mortos e do julgamento eterno. 3 Mas, com a ajuda de Deus, avancemos para um conhecimento mais perfeito.

4 De facto, é impossível que alguém que já tenha recebido a luz de Deus, que provou das coisas celestiais, que participou do Espírito Santo, 5 viu como é boa a palavra de Deus e conheceu o poder do mundo que há de vir e, 6 depois disto tudo, se transviaram, sejam renovados para o arrependimento. É como se crucificassem novamente o Filho de Deus, expondo-o publicamente à afronta.

7 Quando a terra lavrada recebe chuvas que caem com frequência e produz boas colheitas para os que a cultivam, tem a bênção de Deus. 8 Se uma terra produz espinhos e cardos é porque não presta e será queimada.

9 Mas de vocês, meus queridos amigos, ainda que falemos assim, contamos que as vossas vidas produzam sempre os melhores frutos, que devem ser o resultado normal da vossa salvação. 10 Deus não é injusto. Ele não se esquece do vosso trabalho e do amor que têm mostrado pelo Senhor, pelos serviços que têm prestado e continuam a prestar aos crentes. 11 E o nosso desejo é que cada um continue a mostrar o mesmo zelo até ao fim da vida, até ao momento em que verão completamente realizada a vossa esperança. 12 Não se tornem descuidados, mas procurem seguir o exemplo de todos aqueles que pela fé, e pela sua persistência, têm recebido o cumprimento das promessas de Deus.

13 Quando Deus fez a promessa a Abraão, garantiu-a com um juramento feito em seu próprio nome, visto que não havia ninguém maior do que ele. 14 E disse: "Garanto-te que te abençoarei efetivamente e que terás uma descendência abundantíssima."*6.14 Gn 22.17.15 Abraão esperou com paciência e viu a promessa concretizar-se.

16 É evidente que os homens, quando prestam juramento, procuram fazê-lo por alguém que lhes seja superior, que sirva de garantia, para que não haja desentendimento. 17 Assim também Deus confirmou o que disse com um juramento, a fim de que aqueles que iriam receber a promessa tivessem a certeza de que nunca mudaria os seus planos. 18 Assim, por dois fatores imutáveis, a promessa e o juramento, podemos encontrar um forte consolo nele. É pois impossível que Deus diga uma coisa que afinal não cumpre. E isso dá-nos muita segurança, a nós para quem a esperança da vida eterna é como um refúgio. 19 Esta esperança é para a nossa alma como uma âncora segura e firme que nos garante a entrada no interior do véu, 20 onde Cristo entrou antes de nós e em nosso favor, na sua dignidade de sumo sacerdote para sempre, à semelhança de Melquisedeque.

1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this will we do, if God permit. 4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. 7 For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God: 8 But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned. 9 But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. 10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. 11 And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: 12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. 13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, 14 Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. 15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. 16 For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife. 17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: 18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: 19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; 20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
