1 Por isso, devemos prestar muita atenção à verdade que já temos ouvido. Se não, corremos o risco de nos desviarmos dela. 2 Porque se a palavra da Lei vinda por intermédio de anjos se mostrou tão válida que todos os que lhe desobedeceram foram castigados, 3 como escaparemos nós se ficarmos indiferentes a essa tão grande salvação, que nos foi anunciada pelo próprio Senhor, e depois transmitida por aqueles que a ouviram? 4 Além disso, Deus mesmo tem apoiado esses testemunhos através de sinais, de milagres e de várias manifestações do seu poder, e por dons da parte do Espírito Santo, concedidos segundo a sua vontade.

5 Além disso, o mundo futuro, de que falamos nas nossas pregações, não é pelos anjos que há de ser dirigido. 6 Porque há uma passagem das Escrituras em que se diz:

"Que é o homem, para que te preocupes com ele?

E quem é o filho do homem, para que te lembres dele?

7 E apesar disso, fizeste-o um pouco mais baixo que os anjos,

e coroaste-o de honra e glória,

8 puseste tudo sob os seus pés."*2.8 Sl 8.4-6.

Contudo, não vemos que essas coisas estejam, de facto, realizadas e que tudo esteja submetido ao ser humano. 9 Vemos, sim, Jesus, o qual por um pouco de tempo foi mesmo inferior aos anjos, dignificado agora com toda a glória e honra, por causa de ter sofrido a morte por nós; morte essa que, pela bondade de Deus, experimentou a favor de toda a humanidade. 10 Porque Deus tinha planeado permitir que Jesus sofresse e por esse meio levasse muitos filhos a Deus, a quem pertence tudo, pois tudo criou. Esse sofrimento tornou Jesus o seu perfeito Salvador.

11 Nós que fomos purificados por Jesus temos agora o mesmo Pai que ele. E é por isso que ele não se envergonha de nos chamar irmãos, 12 dizendo:

"Declararei o teu nome perante os meus irmãos;

falarei de ti perante a assembleia do povo."*2.12 Sl 22.22.

13 E noutra ocasião disse também:

"Porei a minha confiança em Deus."*2.13 Is 8.17.

E disse também:

"Aqui estou eu, com os filhos que Deus me deu."*2.13 Is 8.18.

14 E visto que nós, seus filhos, somos seres humanos, também ele se tornou carne e sangue. Pois só como ser humano poderia passar pela morte e esmagar a força daquele que tinha o poder da morte, o Diabo, 15 libertando todos aqueles que tinham a sua vida inteiramente subjugada pelo medo da morte.

16 Todos sabemos que não é aos anjos que ele ajuda, mas aos da descendência de Abraão. 17 Por isso, era necessário que Jesus fosse em tudo semelhante aos seus irmãos e que, por consequência, pudesse ser nosso fiel sumo sacerdote, cheio de compaixão. Assim, ele pôde oferecer um sacrifício que tira os pecados do povo. 18 Tendo ele mesmo sido sujeitado à tentação, e passado pelo sofrimento, pode assim socorrer aqueles que passam pela prova da tentação!

1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. 2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; 3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; 4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

5 For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak. 6 But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? 7 Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: 8 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him. 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. 10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. 11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, 12 Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee. 13 And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me. 14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. 16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. 17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. 18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.
