1 Deverão amar o Senhor, vosso Deus, e cumprir os seus preceitos, os seus decretos, as suas leis e os seus mandamentos, durante toda a vossa vida. 2 Ouçam bem! Não estou a falar com os vossos filhos que não tiveram a experiência dos castigos do Senhor, vosso Deus, nem viram a imensidão do seu tremendo poder. 3 Eles não assistiram aos milagres que fez no Egito contra Faraó em toda aquela terra. 4 Não viram o que Deus fez aos exércitos do Egito, aos seus cavalos, aos seus carros de combate; como os afundou no mar Vermelho, quando vos perseguiam, e como anulou toda a sua força até ao dia de hoje. 5 Eles não sentiram como Deus tomou conta de vocês, momento após momento, por todos estes anos em que andaram vagueando pelo deserto até chegarem aqui. 6 Eles não estavam lá quando Datã e Abirão, os filhos de Eliabe, descendentes de Rúben, pecaram e a terra se abriu e foram engolidos com as suas famílias, as tendas e tudo o que tinham, aos olhos de todo o Israel!

7 Vocês, sim, viram todas essas coisas espantosas que o Senhor realizou. 8 Por isso, tanto mais zelosos devem ser na observância destes mandamentos que vos dou hoje, para que possam ter força para tomar posse da terra que vão conquistar. 9 Se obedecerem a estas ordenanças desfrutarão de uma vida próspera e longa na terra que o Senhor vos prometeu e àqueles de quem descendem, uma terra onde jorra leite e mel. 10 Porque essa terra onde se preparam para entrar não é como o território do Egito donde vêm, onde era necessário regar com bombas operadas com o pé para dar de beber à terra. 11 Esta é uma terra de colinas e de vales onde a terra é regada pelas chuvas que caiem do céu; 12 é uma terra da qual o Senhor, vosso Deus, se ocupa pessoalmente! Os seus olhos estarão sempre sobre ela, dia após dia, todo o ano.

13 Se cuidadosamente respeitarem todas estas leis que vos dou hoje, e se amarem o Senhor, vosso Deus, com todo o coração e de toda a vossa alma, e o adorarem, 14 então, enviar-vos-ei chuvas no seu devido tempo, chuvas do outono e da primavera, as quais farão produzir maravilhosas colheitas de cereais, de vinho novo e de azeite. 15 Terão excelentes pastagens para o gado, beneficiarão de comida abundante e viverão felizes.

16 Mas tenham cuidado que os vossos corações não se desviem de Deus, para vir a adorar uns outros deuses quaisquer. 17 Pois se o fizerem, a ira do Senhor se acenderá severamente contra vocês e vos fechará os céus; não haverá mais chuva, nem belas searas, e depressa perecerão nessa boa terra que o Senhor vos dá. 18 Por isso, guardem estes mandamentos atentamente nos vossos espíritos. Atem-nos às vossas mãos como um sinal de lembrança, para nunca falharem em obedecer-lhes; ponham-nos nas vossas testas, entre os olhos! 19 Ensinem-nos aos vossos filhos. Falem deles quando estiverem sentados, repousando em casa, ou quando saírem e estiverem caminhando fora de casa, à hora de deitar e à hora de levantar de manhã. 20 Escrevam-nos nas portas das vossas casas, à entrada das vossas habitações, 21 a fim de que, enquanto houver céus acima da Terra, vocês e os vossos filhos gozem dessa vida próspera que vos espera na terra que o Senhor jurou dar aos vossos antepassados.

22 Se obedecerem cuidadosamente aos mandamentos que vos dou, se amarem o Senhor, vosso Deus, andando em todos os seus caminhos, apegando-se a ele, 23 então o Senhor lançará fora da vossa terra todos os outros povos, ainda que possam ser maiores e mais poderosos do que vocês. 24 Para onde quer que forem a terra é vossa. As vossas fronteiras estender-se-ão desde o Negueve, a sul, até ao Líbano, e desde o rio Eufrates até ao mar Mediterrâneo. 25 Ninguém terá poder bastante para vos fazer frente, porque o Senhor, vosso Deus, mandará medo e terror à vossa frente, para onde quer que forem, como prometeu.

26 Hoje vos proponho a escolha entre a bênção e a maldição de Deus! 27 Haverá bênção se obedecerem aos mandamentos do Senhor, vosso Deus, que hoje vos dou; 28 haverá maldição se os rejeitarem e se se puserem a adorar os deuses dos outros povos.

29 Quando o Senhor, vosso Deus, vos estabelecer na terra que vão possuir, deverá ser proclamada uma bênção no monte Gerizim e uma maldição no monte Ebal. 30 Gerizim e Ebal são dois montes a poente do rio Jordão, onde moram os cananeus, nas campinas de Gilgal, onde estão os carvalhais de Moré. 31 Vão pois atravessar o Jordão e viver na terra que o Senhor, vosso Deus, vos dá. Quando tomarem posse dela e nela viverem, 32 deverão obedecer a todas as leis que hoje vos dou.

1 Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, alway. 2 And know ye this day: for I speak not with your children which have not known, and which have not seen the chastisement of the LORD your God, his greatness, his mighty hand, and his stretched out arm, 3 And his miracles, and his acts, which he did in the midst of Egypt unto Pharaoh the king of Egypt, and unto all his land; 4 And what he did unto the army of Egypt, unto their horses, and to their chariots; how he made the water of the Red sea to overflow them as they pursued after you, and how the LORD hath destroyed them unto this day; 5 And what he did unto you in the wilderness, until ye came into this place; 6 And what he did unto Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, the son of Reuben: how the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and their tents, and all the substance that was in their possession, in the midst of all Israel:*11.6 substance…: or, living substance which followed them*11.6 was…: Heb. was at their feet 7 But your eyes have seen all the great acts of the LORD which he did.

8 Therefore shall ye keep all the commandments which I command you this day, that ye may be strong, and go in and possess the land, whither ye go to possess it; 9 And that ye may prolong your days in the land, which the LORD sware unto your fathers to give unto them and to their seed, a land that floweth with milk and honey.

10 For the land, whither thou goest in to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, from whence ye came out, where thou sowedst thy seed, and wateredst it with thy foot, as a garden of herbs: 11 But the land, whither ye go to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven: 12 A land which the LORD thy God careth for: the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.*11.12 careth…: Heb. seeketh

13 And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, 14 That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil. 15 And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle, that thou mayest eat and be full.*11.15 send: Heb. give 16 Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them; 17 And then the LORD’s wrath be kindled against you, and he shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and lest ye perish quickly from off the good land which the LORD giveth you.

18 Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. 19 And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. 20 And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates: 21 That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth.

22 For if ye shall diligently keep all these commandments which I command you, to do them, to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, and to cleave unto him; 23 Then will the LORD drive out all these nations from before you, and ye shall possess greater nations and mightier than yourselves. 24 Every place whereon the soles of your feet shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates, even unto the uttermost sea shall your coast be. 25 There shall no man be able to stand before you: for the LORD your God shall lay the fear of you and the dread of you upon all the land that ye shall tread upon, as he hath said unto you.

26 Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse; 27 A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day: 28 And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known. 29 And it shall come to pass, when the LORD thy God hath brought thee in unto the land whither thou goest to possess it, that thou shalt put the blessing upon mount Gerizim, and the curse upon mount Ebal. 30 Are they not on the other side Jordan, by the way where the sun goeth down, in the land of the Canaanites, which dwell in the champaign over against Gilgal, beside the plains of Moreh? 31 For ye shall pass over Jordan to go in to possess the land which the LORD your God giveth you, and ye shall possess it, and dwell therein. 32 And ye shall observe to do all the statutes and judgments which I set before you this day.
