1 Então veio até mim a seguinte mensagem do Senhor. 2 "Por que razão as pessoas usam este ditado a propósito da terra de Israel:

‘Os pais comeram uvas ácidas

e os filhos ficaram com os dentes embotados’?

3 Tão certo como eu viver, diz o Senhor Deus, não hão de dizer mais tal coisa em Israel! 4 Porque todas as almas me pertencem e hão de ser julgadas, tanto pais como filhos, da mesma forma. É unicamente por causa dos seus pecados que uma pessoa morrerá.

5 No entanto, se um indivíduo for justo, se fizer o que for justo e reto, 6 se não andar pelas montanhas a prestar culto perante os ídolos de Israel, adorando-os, se não cometer adultério, se não se deitar com uma mulher durante o período da sua menstruação, 7 se for paciente com os seus devedores, não ficando com os penhores que lhe deixaram os devedores mais pobres, se não roubar, mas antes pelo contrário matar a fome aos que comem mal e vestir os que não têm roupa suficiente, 8 se fizer empréstimos sem usura e se se mantiver longe de tudo o que é pecado, se for reto e justo quando emitir juízos sobre o seu semelhante, 9 se obedecer às minhas leis, então essa pessoa, que é justa, diz o Senhor Deus, certamente viverá.

10 Contudo, se aquele homem tiver um filho que é ladrão ou assassino, 11 crimes que o seu pai nunca cometeu, que recusa obedecer aos mandamentos de Deus, antes presta adoração aos deuses nos montes, comete adultério, 12 oprime os pobres e necessitados, engana os seus devedores, recusando devolver o que lhe entregaram como penhor da dívida, se amar os ídolos e lhes prestar culto, 13 se emprestar dinheiro com usura, poderá esse indivíduo, o filho desse homem, viver? Com certeza que não! Certamente há de morrer por sua própria culpa!

14 Mas se este indivíduo pecador tiver um filho que, vendo toda a maldade do pai, vier a temer a Deus e recusar um tal tipo de vida, 15 se não for para os montes fazer celebrações aos ídolos e adorá-los, se não cometer adultério, 16 se for leal para com os que lhe devem alguma coisa e não os defraudar, se souber alimentar os que têm fome e cobrir os que não têm com que se vestir, 17 se der ajuda aos pobres e não emprestar dinheiro com usura, se obedecer à minha palavra, não será por causa do pecado do seu pai que ele irá morrer, antes com toda a certeza viverá! 18 No entanto, o seu pai sim, esse morrerá por causa da sua própria maldade, porque foi mau, roubou e praticou injustiças.

19 ‘Como?’ perguntam vocês. ‘Então o filho não há de pagar pela maldade do pai?’ Não! Porque se fizer o que é reto e guardar os meus mandamentos, com toda a certeza que há de viver. 20 Aquele que pecar, esse morrerá. O filho não será castigado em consequência da iniquidade dos pais, nem o pai por causa do pecado dos filhos. A pessoa que for reta terá a recompensa da sua retidão, tal como o pecador terá a paga da sua própria maldade.

21 Mas se um pecador se arrepender do seu pecado e começar a cumprir as minhas leis, fazendo o que for justo, certamente que viverá; não morrerá. 22 Todo o seu passado de pecado será esquecido e terá vida em consequência da sua retidão.

23 Vocês julgam que eu tenho prazer em que o pecador morra?, pergunta o Senhor Deus. Com certeza que não! Aquilo que eu pretendo é unicamente que ele abandone os seus caminhos de maldade e viva.

24 E então, se uma pessoa justa começar a pecar e a agir como um outro pecador qualquer, ser-lhe-á conservada a vida? Não, certamente! Toda a sua anterior retidão é esquecida e a morte será o salário do seu pecado.

25 Mas vocês dizem ainda: ‘O Senhor não é justo!’ Ouçam-me, ó povo de Israel! Quem é que é justo afinal, eu ou vocês? 26 Quando uma pessoa justa deixar de o ser e se puser a pecar, morre pelo mal que praticou. 27 Um pecador que se desvia do mal e passa a guardar os meus mandamentos, praticando o que é justo, salvará a sua alma. 28 Reconsiderou a sua vida, decidiu abandonar o pecado e passar a viver uma vida justa. Sem dúvida que há de viver e não morrer. 29 Mas o povo de Israel continua a dizer que o Senhor não é justo!

Ó povo de Israel, vocês é que são injustos, não eu. 30 Julgarei cada um, ó povo de Israel, castigarei ou recompensarei cada um conforme as suas ações. Oh! Convertam-se dos vossos pecados, enquanto é tempo! 31 Lancem-nos para bem longe e recebam um novo coração e um novo espírito. Porque haveriam de morrer, ó povo de Israel? 32 Não tenho alegria nenhuma em que morram, diz o Senhor Deus. Convertam-se e vivam!

1 The word of the LORD came unto me again, saying, 2 What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge? 3 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel. 4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

5 But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,*18.5 that…: Heb. judgment and justice 6 And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour’s wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman, 7 And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment; 8 He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man, 9 Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.

10 If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things,*18.10 robber: or, breaker up of an house*18.10 that doeth…: or, that doeth to his brother besides any of these 11 And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour’s wife, 12 Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination, 13 Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.*18.13 blood: Heb. bloods

14 Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father’s sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like, 15 That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour’s wife, 16 Neither hath oppressed any, hath not withholden the pledge, neither hath spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,*18.16 hath not…: Heb. hath not pledged the pledge, or, taken to pledge 17 That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live. 18 As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.

19 Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live. 20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 22 All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live. 23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?

24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.

25 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal? 26 When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die. 27 Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. 28 Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 29 Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?

30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.*18.30 yourselves: or, others

31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? 32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.*18.32 yourselves: or, others
