1 Mais tarde, veio até mim a palavra do Senhor: 2 "Homem mortal, eis que eu, o Senhor Deus, digo o seguinte a Israel: Para onde quer que olhares, para norte, para sul, este ou oeste, 3 a tua terra terá deixado de existir. Já não haverá esperança, pois farei cair sobre ti a minha ira, por causa dos vossos atos reprováveis. 4 Desviarei os meus olhos e deixarei de ter piedade de ti; serás castigado plenamente e saberás que eu sou o Senhor!"

5 Diz o Senhor Deus: "Com golpe sobre golpe, acabarei contigo! 6 Chegou o fim, a tua condenação final espera-te! Já desponta o dia do teu julgamento, chegou o tempo, aproxima-se o dia da aflição. 7 Será um dia de gritos de angústia e não de alegria, com toda a certeza! 8 Em breve derramarei a minha ira e farei com que realize completamente o seu trabalho de punição sobre ti, devido aos teus atos reprováveis. 9 Não te pouparei nem terei piedade de ti. Vou pedir-te contas pelo mal que fizeste e as tuas práticas reprováveis estarão no meio de ti, para que saibas que sou eu, o Senhor, quem faz isto.

10 Chegou o dia do juízo, já alvorece a manhã, porque a vossa maldade e orgulho cresceram desmedidamente e já atingiram o seu ponto máximo 11 A violência produziu mais maldade, mas deles nada ficará, nem da sua riqueza, nem do esplendor da sua glória.

12 Sim, chegou o momento! Esse dia de julgamento desponta rapidamente! Já nada adiantará comprar nem vender seja o que for, porque a ira ardente de Deus já está a aplicar-se na terra. 13 E mesmo que um determinado comerciante consiga sobreviver, o seu comércio desaparecerá, pois Deus falou já contra o povo de Israel; tudo será destruído; nenhum desses cujas vidas estão cheias de pecado poderá refazer a sua existência.

14 Tocam já as trombetas entre o exército israelita: ‘Às armas!’ Mas ninguém escuta, porque a minha indignação caiu sobre eles todos. 15 Se alguém ousa sair fora das muralhas, logo aparece o inimigo para o matar. Para os que se mantêm lá dentro é a peste e a fome que os devoram. 16 Os poucos que conseguirem escapar sentir-se-ão tão sós como as pombas matinais que se escondem pelas montanhas; cada um farta-se de chorar os seus pecados. 17 Todas as mãos se sentirão enfraquecidas e todos os joelhos inconsistentes como a água. 18 Hão de vestir-se de saco; horror e vergonha os cobrirão; raparão a cabeça em sinal de tristeza e remorso.

19 Lançarão a prata nas ruas e jogarão fora o ouro, como desperdício inútil, pois no dia do juízo do Senhor não servirá de nada. Não o poderão gastar para satisfazer os seus desejos nem para encher o estômago, pois o ouro e a prata é que os fizeram tropeçar. 20 Tinham orgulho nas suas belas joias e usaram-nas para fazer ídolos abomináveis! Por isso, eu mesmo as transformei em algo imundo e nojento para eles. 21 Por isso deixarei que os estrangeiros saqueiem as suas riquezas e que os ímpios lhes levem tudo, profanando a sua cidade. 22 Virarei deles o meu rosto, enquanto eles levarão todos os tesouros do meu lugar secreto e deixarão este em ruínas.

23 Preparem cadeias para o meu povo, porque a terra está cheia de crimes sangrentos e Jerusalém repleta de violência. 24 Por isso, farei escravos dos seus habitantes. Esmagarei o seu orgulho, fazendo vir sobre Jerusalém a pior gente de entre os povos, para que ocupem as suas casas, destruam as fortificações de que tanto se gabam e profanem os seus santuários. 25 Chegou a altura da destruição. Hão de procurar ansiosamente a paz, mas não a acharão. 26 Serão atingidos por calamidades umas atrás das outras! Hão de desejar ter um profeta que os guie, mas tanto os sacerdotes como os anciãos, 27 o rei e as altas entidades andarão desamparados, chorando de desespero. O povo tremerá de terror, porque darei a recompensa do mal que têm praticado, terão aquilo que merecem. Saberão, então, que eu sou o Senhor!"
