1 No primeiro dia do terceiro mês*31.1 Mês de Sivan. Entre a lua nova do mês de maio e o mês de junho., do décimo primeiro ano do cativeiro do rei Jeconias, recebi esta palavra do Senhor. 2 "Homem mortal, diz o seguinte ao Faraó, rei do Egito, e a todo o seu povo: Quem se pode comparar contigo, na tua grandeza? 3 Vocês são como a Assíria era, uma grande e poderosa nação, semelhante a um cedro do Líbano cheio de grossos ramos e frondosas ramagens, com o seu cimo a chegar às nuvens. 4 As suas raízes penetraram profundamente na terra húmida; desenvolveu-se luxuriantemente; havia água para ela e ainda para as outras árvores à sua volta. 5 Elevou-se acima de todas as outras; prosperou e desenvolveu em si esplêndidos ramos, por causa da fertilidade do terreno em que penetravam as raízes. 6 As aves fizeram os ninhos nas suas ramagens e foi à sua fresca sombra que muitos animais do campo tiveram as crias. Aliás, poder-se-ia dizer que todas as grandes nações da Terra viveram à sua sombra. 7 Tornou-se assim forte e admirável, por causa das águas que as raízes conseguiram ir buscar ao fundo da terra. 8 Era mais alta do que todas as árvores do jardim de Deus; não havia cipreste que tivesse ramos como os seus; não havia plátanos com ramagem que se lhe comparasse, nem nada a igualava em beleza. 9 Devido a toda aquela magnificência que lhe dei, tornou-se alvo de inveja de todas as árvores do Éden.

10 Mas o Egito fez-se orgulhoso e arrogante, diz o Senhor Deus. Por isso, devido a ter-se posto tão acima das outras, chegando até às nuvens, 11 entregá-lo-ei nas mãos de uma tremenda nação que a destruirá, tal como merece a sua maldade. Eu próprio o derrubarei. 12 Um exército estrangeiro, o terror das nações, invadir-lhe-á a terra, derrubá-la-á e abandoná-la-á tombada no chão. Os seus ramos serão cortados e espalhados pelas montanhas, vales e ribeiros da terra. Todos os que se abrigavam à sua sombra partirão, não lhe ligando mais importância alguma. 13 Os pássaros arrancarão os seus rebentos verdes; só os animais selvagens procurarão ainda abrigo no que lhe resta de ramos secos. 14 Daqui em diante, nenhuma outra árvore próxima das águas chegará a erguer-se orgulhosamente tão alto, com a sua copa sobre ramos bem espessos; porque todos estão condenados a morrer, como os homens mortais, e a descer às profundezas da Terra, como os mortos descem ao sepulcro.

15 Diz o Senhor Deus: Quando ele caiu, fiz os oceanos vestirem-se de luto por ele e refreei as suas correntes. Também o Líbano se pôs de luto e as suas árvores choraram. 16 Fiz as nações tremerem de medo ao ouvirem a notícia da sua queda, pois mandei-o descer ao mundo dos mortos*31.16 No hebraico, Sheol, é traduzido, ao longo do livro, por mundo dos mortos. Segundo o pensamento hebraico do Antigo Testamento, é o lugar dos mortos, mas não necessariamente como um sepulcro ou sepultura, que é um lugar de morte e definhamento, mas sim um lugar de existência consciente, embora sombria e infeliz., e todos os que eram iguais a ele. Todas as outras orgulhosas árvores do Éden, as melhores e as mais excelentes que havia no Líbano, cujas raízes iam buscar bem fundo a água, ficam satisfeitas por vê-las também ali com elas. 17 Também os seus aliados foram todos destruídos e pereceram com ele. Desceram juntamente ao mundo dos mortos aqueles povos que tinham vivido à sua sombra.

18 Ó Egito, és glorioso e magnificente entre as outras árvores do jardim de Deus, as outras nações do mundo! Porém, serás abatido até às profundezas da Terra com todas essas nações! Serás atirado para o meio dos pagãos que foram mortos pela espada!

É este o destino do Faraó e das multidões que constituem o seu povo, diz o Senhor Deus!"

1 And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the third month, in the first day of the month, that the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 2 Son of man, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, and to his multitude; Whom art thou like in thy greatness?

3 Behold, the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon with fair branches, and with a shadowing shroud, and of an high stature; and his top was among the thick boughs.*31.3 with fair branches: Heb. fair of branches 4 The waters made him great, the deep set him up on high with her rivers running round about his plants, and sent out her little rivers unto all the trees of the field.*31.4 made…: or, nourished him*31.4 set…: or, brought him up*31.4 little rivers: or, conduits 5 Therefore his height was exalted above all the trees of the field, and his boughs were multiplied, and his branches became long because of the multitude of waters, when he shot forth.*31.5 when…: or, when it sent them forth 6 All the fowls of heaven made their nests in his boughs, and under his branches did all the beasts of the field bring forth their young, and under his shadow dwelt all great nations. 7 Thus was he fair in his greatness, in the length of his branches: for his root was by great waters. 8 The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the fir trees were not like his boughs, and the chesnut trees were not like his branches; nor any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty. 9 I have made him fair by the multitude of his branches: so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, envied him.

10 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast lifted up thyself in height, and he hath shot up his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height; 11 I have therefore delivered him into the hand of the mighty one of the heathen; he shall surely deal with him: I have driven him out for his wickedness.*31.11 he…: Heb. in doing he shall do unto him 12 And strangers, the terrible of the nations, have cut him off, and have left him: upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen, and his boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the people of the earth are gone down from his shadow, and have left him. 13 Upon his ruin shall all the fowls of the heaven remain, and all the beasts of the field shall be upon his branches: 14 To the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves for their height, neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs, neither their trees stand up in their height, all that drink water: for they are all delivered unto death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.*31.14 their trees…: or, stand upon themselves for their height 15 Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day when he went down to the grave I caused a mourning: I covered the deep for him, and I restrained the floods thereof, and the great waters were stayed: and I caused Lebanon to mourn for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him.*31.15 to mourn: Heb. to be black 16 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth. 17 They also went down into hell with him unto them that be slain with the sword; and they that were his arm, that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen.

18 To whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? yet shalt thou be brought down with the trees of Eden unto the nether parts of the earth: thou shalt lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord GOD.
