1 Dirige esta lamentação aos chefes de Israel.

2 Que tipo de mulher foi a vossa mãe? Foi como uma leoa que, deitada entre leões, alimentou e criou os seus filhotes. 3 Um desses filhotes tornou-se um forte leão, aprendeu a lançar-se sobre a presa, fez-se um devorador de gente. 4 Então as nações fizeram um apelo a caçadores que o apanharam e o fizeram cair numa cova armadilhada, trazendo-o depois em cadeias para o Egito.

5 Quando a mãe do leão se deu conta de que todas as esperanças que tinha posto nele se esvaneciam, pegou noutro dos seus cachorrinhos e ensinou-o a ser um verdadeiro rei de feras. 6 Tornou-se assim um chefe entre os leões, aprendeu a capturar as presas e também ele ficou sendo um autêntico devorador de gente.

7 Demoliu os grandes palácios das nações circunvizinhas, arruinou-lhes as cidades, desolou-lhes as plantações, devastou searas. Não havia ninguém que não tremesse de terror ao ouvi-lo rugir. 8 Foi então que os exércitos desses povos em volta o cercaram, lhe armaram uma cilada e o apanharam numa cova. 9 Fizeram-no entrar numa jaula e levaram-no à presença do rei da Babilónia. No cativeiro a sua voz nunca mais ecoaria através das montanhas de Israel.

10 A vossa mãe foi também como uma videira à beira dum rego de água. 11 A sua rama aumentou e deu abundante fruto, por causa de toda aquela água. O ramo mais desenvolvido dessa videira tornou-se num cetro de governante, forte e temível, elevando-se distintamente acima dos outros, sendo visível à distância.

12 No entanto, essa videira foi arrancada com fúria e deitada ao chão. Os seus ramos foram quebrados e secaram com a ajuda dum forte vento oriental. O seu fruto foi todo queimado com fogo. 13 Essa videira está agora plantada num deserto, numa terra árida e seca. 14 O fogo espalhou-se através dum dos seus ramos mais fortes e consumiu toda a ramagem e frutos. Não há nela mais nenhum ramo vigoroso para servir de cetro de governante."

O cumprimento desta lamentação já começou e vai, com toda a certeza, continuar.

1 Moreover take thou up a lamentation for the princes of Israel, 2 And say, What is thy mother? A lioness: she lay down among lions, she nourished her whelps among young lions. 3 And she brought up one of her whelps: it became a young lion, and it learned to catch the prey; it devoured men. 4 The nations also heard of him; he was taken in their pit, and they brought him with chains unto the land of Egypt. 5 Now when she saw that she had waited, and her hope was lost, then she took another of her whelps, and made him a young lion. 6 And he went up and down among the lions, he became a young lion, and learned to catch the prey, and devoured men. 7 And he knew their desolate palaces, and he laid waste their cities; and the land was desolate, and the fulness thereof, by the noise of his roaring.*19.7 their desolate…: or, their widows*19.7 the fulness…: or, all it containeth 8 Then the nations set against him on every side from the provinces, and spread their net over him: he was taken in their pit. 9 And they put him in ward in chains, and brought him to the king of Babylon: they brought him into holds, that his voice should no more be heard upon the mountains of Israel.*19.9 in chains: or, in hooks

10 Thy mother is like a vine in thy blood, planted by the waters: she was fruitful and full of branches by reason of many waters.*19.10 in…: or, in thy quietness, or, in thy likeness 11 And she had strong rods for the sceptres of them that bare rule, and her stature was exalted among the thick branches, and she appeared in her height with the multitude of her branches. 12 But she was plucked up in fury, she was cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up her fruit: her strong rods were broken and withered; the fire consumed them. 13 And now she is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and thirsty ground. 14 And fire is gone out of a rod of her branches, which hath devoured her fruit, so that she hath no strong rod to be a sceptre to rule. This is a lamentation, and shall be for a lamentation.
