1 É maravilhoso ser-se sábio, entender as coisas, ser capaz de as analisar e interpretar. A sabedoria dá luz a um rosto, suaviza a sua dureza.

2 Observa os mandamentos do rei, de acordo com os teus votos. 3 Não estejas sempre a tentar livrar-te da obrigação de cumprir com os teus deveres, mesmo que sejam desagradáveis, porque o rei faz o que bem entende. 4 A palavra do rei tem poder e ninguém tem capacidade para o contestar ou contrariar. 5 Os que lhe obedecem estarão abrigados de qualquer mal. 6 O sábio encontrará sempre a ocasião mais oportuna e a melhor forma de dizer o que pensa; mesmo quando são grandes os problemas que pesam sobre o homem.

7 Sim, há um tempo para tudo e um modo próprio de agir, ainda que os males dos homens caiam pesadamente sobre si próprios. Como podem impedir que aquilo que desconhecem venha mesmo a acontecer? 8 Ninguém pode impedir que o seu espírito parta para a eternidade; ninguém tem poder para escapar à morte. Não há armas que valham, nessa peleja. Quanto aos ímpios, não será a sua maldade a livrá-los.

9 Tenho refletido profundamente sobre tudo o que acontece aqui, neste mundo, onde há gente que é capaz de oprimir a outros. 10 Vi pessoas malvadas irem a sepultar, e os seus amigos, de regresso do cemitério, tendo esquecido todas as más ações do morto, louvarem-no na localidade onde tinham sido praticados tantos crimes! Que coisa absurda!

11 Visto que Deus não castiga os pecadores no próprio instante, as pessoas convencem-se que ficam impunes, ao praticarem o mal. 12 Ainda que um homem peque mil vezes e continue a viver, sei, de certeza, que as coisas correrão bem para os que temem a Deus. 13 O mesmo não sucederá aos ímpios, que não terão vidas prolongadas e boas; os seus dias passarão tão depressa como as sombras, visto que não temem a Deus.

14 Acontece uma coisa estranha aqui neste mundo: há justos que sofrem, como se fossem maus, e alguns maus que são recompensados, como se fossem retos. Isto é algo muito perturbador! 15 Por isso, decidi gastar a minha vida divertindo-me, pois senti que não havia nada melhor, sobre a Terra, para um homem, do que comer, beber e alegrar-se, na esperança de que esta felicidade o acompanhe em todo o duro trabalho que Deus dá à humanidade, por toda a parte.

16 Na minha busca de sabedoria, observei que tudo isso acontecia em qualquer ponto do mundo; atividades incessantes, de dia e de noite. 17 Na verdade, apenas Deus pode ver tudo o que se passa; nem o homem mais sábio, que diz que sabe tudo, nem esse consegue ver o mesmo que Deus.

6 Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him. 7 For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?*8.7 when…: or, how it shall be? 8 There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.*8.8 discharge: or, casting off weapons

9 All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt. 10 And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity. 11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

12 Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him: 13 But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.

14 There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity. 15 Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.

16 When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:) 17 Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
