1 Também isto cuidadosamente tomei em consideração, que os justos e os sábios estão dependentes da vontade de Deus. Os homens não sabem sequer se virão a conhecer o amor ou o ódio. Não podem prever coisa nenhuma. 2 Acontece o mesmo a toda a gente, tanto ao justo como ao ímpio, ao bom e ao mau, ao puro e ao impuro, ao que consagra sacrifícios e louvores e àquele que não os oferece. O que acontece com o homem bom, ocorre também com o pecador, e o que faz juramentos passa pelas mesmas circunstâncias que aquele que evita jurar.

3 Essa é a razão por que os homens não procuram ser bons e escolhem os seus maus caminhos; porque na vida não lhes resta senão, como esperança, a morte. 4 A esperança é apenas para os vivos. Um cão vivo vale mais que um leão morto!

5 Os vivos, esses sabem, pelo menos, que hão de morrer! Os mortos não sabem nada, nem sequer têm memória. 6 Tudo o que fizeram, os seus amores, ódios, invejas, tudo se foi com eles e já não têm participação, de espécie alguma, naquilo que se passa aqui na Terra. 7 Por isso, come e bebe com alegria, porque Deus já se agradou do que fazes! 8 Veste sempre roupa de festa e nunca deixes de ungir a tua cabeça com óleo! 9 Vive feliz com a mulher que amas, cada dia da breve existência que Deus te concede aqui no mundo. Esse é o quinhão com que Deus te recompensa pelo que passas aqui em baixo. 10 Tudo o que fizeres, fá-lo bem, porque no mundo dos mortos*9.10 Sheol. Segundo o pensamento hebraico do Antigo Testamento, é o lugar dos mortos, mas não necessariamente como um sepulcro ou sepultura, que é um lugar de morte e definhamento, mas sim um lugar de existência consciente, embora sombria e infeliz., para onde acabarás por ir, não há realizações, nem planos para fazer, nem coisas para compreender e analisar.

11 Voltei-me de novo para o que se passa sobre a face da Terra e vi que os que correm mais rápido não são sempre os que ganham as corridas, nem são os mais fortes que ganham sempre as batalhas. Também vi que os homens mais sábios são frequentemente pobres e que os mais capazes não são necessariamente famosos; o tempo e a sorte sobrevêm a todos.

12 O ser humano nunca é capaz de prever quando sobrevirão tempos maus. Como o peixe capturado na rede ou o pássaro apanhado na armadilha, assim vê a desgraça cair-lhe em cima, repentinamente.

13 Há ainda outra coisa que me impressionou bastante, enquanto observava os assuntos dos homens. 14 Havia uma pequena localidade, apenas com alguns habitantes. Veio um poderoso rei atacá-la com o seu exército e sitiá-la com grandes engenhos bélicos. 15 Vivia ali um homem sábio, muito pobre, que sabia como salvar aquela povoação, mas ninguém se preocupou em ir ter com ele. 16 Então dei-me conta de que, apesar da sabedoria ser melhor do que a força, se uma pessoa sábia for pobre será desprezada, e aquilo que ela disser não será tido em consideração. 17 Mesmo assim, vale mais escutar as palavras sábias de um homem sensato, falando calmamente, do que os gritos dum rei de tolos. 18 A sabedoria tem mais valor do que um arsenal de guerra, mas um só erro é capaz de destruir os bens que ela concede.

I gave, or, set to my heart 2 All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath. 3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

4 For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion. 5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. 6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.

7 Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works. 8 Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment. 9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.*9.9 Live…: Heb. See, or, Enjoy life 10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. 12 For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

13 This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me: 14 There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it: 15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. 16 Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. 17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools. 18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.
