1 Disse o Senhor de novo a Moisés: "Mandarei só mais uma grande calamidade sobre o Faraó e a sua terra, depois da qual deixará então o povo partir. Desta vez ficará, na realidade, tão ansioso por se ver livre de vocês que será ele próprio, praticamente, a expulsar-vos. 2 Diz a todos os homens e mulheres de Israel que se preparem, pedindo aos seus vizinhos egípcios todo o tipo de objetos caros, de prata e ouro."

3 O Senhor fez com que os egípcios se tornassem agradáveis para eles, até porque Moisés era já uma grande figura no Egito, respeitado não só pelos funcionários do Faraó, como por todo o povo.

4 Moisés fez então anunciar ao Faraó: "Assim diz o Senhor: ‘Cerca da meia-noite passarei através do Egito. 5 E morrerão todos os filhos mais velhos de cada família no país; desde o filho mais velho do Faraó, herdeiro do trono, até ao filho mais velho do mais humilde escravo, inclusive dos animais. 6 Um grande clamor de morte se levantará em toda a terra. Nunca se terá visto tristeza semelhante, nem antes nem depois. 7 Contudo, nem sequer um cão ousará ladrar contra alguém do povo de Israel ou contra um só dos seus animais, para que saibam a diferença que o Senhor faz entre os egípcios e os israelitas.’ 8 Toda a tua comitiva virá até mim, inclinando-se e rogando: ‘Por favor, retira-te imediatamente daqui e leva o teu povo contigo.’ Nessa altura, então, ir-me-ei!" E Moisés retirou-se, encolerizado, do palácio.

9 O Senhor disse a Moisés: "O Faraó não vos ouvirá, e isso dar-me-á oportunidade de fazer poderosas maravilhas que demonstrem o meu poder." 10 Por isso, ainda que Moisés e Aarão tenham feito estes milagres na presença do próprio Faraó, o Senhor endureceu o coração deste e não deixou sair daquela terra os filhos de Israel.

1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Yet will I bring one plague more upon Pharaoh, and upon Egypt; afterwards he will let you go hence: when he shall let you go, he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether. 2 Speak now in the ears of the people, and let every man borrow of his neighbour, and every woman of her neighbour, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold. 3 And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants, and in the sight of the people.

4 And Moses said, Thus saith the LORD, About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt: 5 And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts. 6 And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more. 7 But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast: that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel. 8 And all these thy servants shall come down unto me, and bow down themselves unto me, saying, Get thee out, and all the people that follow thee: and after that I will go out. And he went out from Pharaoh in a great anger.*11.8 that follow…: Heb. that is at thy feet*11.8 a great…: Heb. heat of anger 9 And the LORD said unto Moses, Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you; that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt. 10 And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh: and the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, so that he would not let the children of Israel go out of his land.
