1 Houve uma grande fome naquela terra, como tinha acontecido nos tempos de Abraão. Por isso, Isaque resolveu mudar-se para a cidade de Gerar, onde reinava Abimeleque, rei dos filisteus.

2 O Senhor apareceu-lhe e disse-lhe: "Não desças ao Egito. Faz o que eu te disser 3 e fica nesta terra. Assim, serei contigo e abençoar-te-ei. Hei de dar-te toda esta terra a ti e aos teus descendentes, tal como prometi a Abraão teu pai. 4 Farei com que a tua descendência seja tão numerosa como as estrelas. Eu lhe darei todas estas terras e através dela serão abençoadas todas as nações da Terra. 5 Faço isto porque Abraão obedeceu à minha voz, aos meus preceitos e às minhas leis."

6 Assim, ficou Isaque em Gerar. 7 E quando os homens dali lhe perguntavam quem era Rebeca, respondia: "É a minha irmã!" Porque tinha receio pela sua própria vida se dissesse que era sua mulher. Temia que o matassem por causa dela, pois era muito atraente.

8 Estava Isaque ali havia já um longo tempo, quando Abimeleque, rei dos filisteus, aproximando-se de uma janela do seu palácio, viu que Isaque brincava afetuosamente com Rebeca.

9 Então mandou chamar Isaque e disse-lhe: "Afinal ela é tua mulher! Porque é que disseste que era tua irmã?" Ele respondeu: "Porque tinha medo que me matassem para ficarem com ela!"

10 "Como é que foste capaz de nos tratar desta maneira? Podia muito bem ter acontecido que alguém tentasse violá-la, e todos nos teríamos tornado culpados de um grave delito por tua causa." 11 Assim, Abimeleque mandou publicar um comunicado em que dizia: "Seja quem for que tocar neste homem ou na sua mulher morrerá."

12 Nesse mesmo ano, a colheita de Isaque foi enorme: cem vezes o que tinha semeado. Isto porque o Senhor o abençoava. 13 E tornou-se um homem de grande posição e cada vez mais rico. 14 Tinha grandes rebanhos de ovelhas e manadas de vacas, assim como muita gente ao seu serviço, de tal forma que os filisteus começaram a invejá-lo. 15 Por isso, começaram a encher de terra os poços que tinham sido todos abertos pelos criados do seu pai, Abraão.

16 Por fim, o rei Abimeleque resolveu pedir-lhe que deixasse o país: "É melhor que nos deixes, porque te tornaste muito mais rico e poderoso do que nós."

17 Isaque mudou-se para o vale de Gerar e ficou ali a viver. 18 E tornou a abrir os poços que tinham sido cavados pelo pai, e que os filisteus tinham enchido de terra, dando-lhes os mesmos nomes que tinham antes. 19 Além disso, os seus pastores abriram um novo poço no vale de Gerar e encontraram uma fonte subterrânea jorrando águas vivas.

20 Os pastores do sítio vieram reclamá-lo: "O poço é nosso; esta terra é nossa!" E insistiram, levantando discussão sobre o assunto. Por isso, Isaque lhe chamou Poço da Discussão. 21 Os homens de Isaque cavaram outro poço, mas houve de novo contenda por causa da posse da água. Por isso, pôs a esse poço o nome de Poço da Desavença. 22 Foram-se dali e abriram ainda um terceiro poço, mas desta vez não houve luta pela sua posse por parte dos habitantes da terra. Daí que lhe tivesse chamado o Reobote,*26.22 Em hebraico, Reobote significa Poço da Largueza. "Porque agora enfim", justificou ele, "o Senhor nos deu espaço bastante para vivermos e temos prosperado."

23 Depois subiu até Berseba. 24 E o Senhor, na noite da sua chegada, disse-lhe: "Eu sou o Deus do teu pai Abraão. Nada receies porque estou contigo e te abençoarei, e farei que os teus descendentes venham a formar uma enorme nação, em consequência do que prometi a Abraão que me serviu e obedeceu." 25 Então levantou ali um altar ao Senhor e orou. E estabeleceu-se ali, tendo os seus homens aberto outro poço.

26 Um dia, Isaque teve a visita do rei Abimeleque, vindo de Gerar, acompanhado do seu conselheiro e amigo Auzate e do comandante do seu exército, Ficol.

27 "Que pretendem de mim?", perguntou-lhes Isaque. "Porque é bem evidente que não é com intuitos amigáveis que me vêm visitar, visto que as vossas atitudes têm sido muito pouco cordiais."

28 "Pois bem", disseram, "temos visto que na verdade o Senhor tem sido contigo e te tem abençoado. Por isso, decidimos vir pedir-te que façamos um tratado. 29 Tu prometes-nos que não nos farás mal, tal como nós nunca te prejudicámos; da nossa parte só te temos feito bem e deixámos-te partir em paz, quando estiveste connosco. Desejamos-te a bênção do Senhor."

30 Isaque fez-lhes uma grande festa; comeram e beberam. 31 No dia seguinte, de manhã cedo, logo que se levantaram, juraram solenemente um ao outro um pacto de não agressão. E despediram-se em paz.

32 Nesse mesmo dia, os homens de Isaque vieram dizer-lhe que tinham achado água no poço que tinham estado a cavar. 33 Por essa razão, pôs-lhe o nome de Siba*26.33 Em hebraico, Siba significa juramento e sete. Berseba, por seu turno, significa poço do juramento e poço das sete (ovelhas). Ver nota a 21.31.. A povoação que se formou ali ficou a ser chamada Berseba, até hoje.

34 Esaú, aos 40 anos, casou com uma rapariga chamada Judite, filha de Beeri, hitita. Casou ainda com Basemate, filha de Elom, hitita também. 35 Estas duas mulheres foram para Isaque e Rebeca razão de amargura.

1 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. 2 And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: 3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; 4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; 5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar: 7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon. 8 And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife. 9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her. 10 And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us. 11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him.*26.12 received: Heb. found 13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great: *26.13 went…: Heb. went going 14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.*26.14 servants: or, husbandry 15 For all the wells which his father’s servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth. 16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.

17 And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. 18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them. 19 And Isaac’s servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.*26.19 springing: Heb. living 20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac’s herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.*26.20 Esek: that is, Contention 21 And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.*26.21 Sitnah: that is, Hatred 22 And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.*26.22 Rehoboth: that is Room 23 And he went up from thence to Beer-sheba. 24 And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake. 25 And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac’s servants digged a well.

26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army. 27 And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you? 28 And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;*26.28 We saw…: Heb.
