1 Abraão casou outra vez, com uma mulher chamada Quetura. 2 E teve vários filhos: Zimrã, Jocsã, Medã, Midiã, Jisbaque e Suá. 3 Os filhos de Jocsã foram Sabá e Dedã. Os filhos de Dedã: Assurim, Letusim e Leumim. 4 Os filhos de Midiã: Efá, Efer, Enoque, Abida e Eldá. Estes foram os seus descendentes por parte de Quetura.

5 Abraão deixou tudo quanto tinha a Isaque. 6 No entanto, deu presentes aos filhos das concubinas e mandou-os para as regiões orientais, longe de Isaque.

7 Abraão viveu 175 anos; 8 morreu numa velhice feliz, repleto de bons anos, e foi sepultado junto dos outros membros da sua família. 9 Os seus filhos Isaque e Ismael sepultaram-no na gruta de Macpela, perto de Mamre, no campo de Efrom, filho de Zoar, o hitita, 10 no campo que Abraão tinha comprado aos hititas. Foi ali que Abraão e Sara, sua esposa, foram sepultados.

11 Depois da morte de Abraão, Deus abençoou muito a Isaque, que habitava junto do Poço de Laai-Roi.

12 Seguem-se os descendentes de Ismael, filho de Abraão e de Agar, a egípcia, criada de sua mulher Sara.

13 Nabaiote era o mais velho; depois Quedar, Adbeel, Mibsão,

14 Misma, Dumá, Massá,

15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Nafis e Quedmá.

16 Estes doze deram os seus nomes às comunidades segundo as quais as famílias se organizaram; ou seja, em acampamentos e em aldeamentos.

17 Ismael viveu 137 anos e foi sepultado junto dos corpos dos outros membros da família. 18 Os seus descendentes espalharam-se desde Havila até Sur, que fica a noroeste do Egito, na direção da Assíria. E estavam constantemente em guerra uns com os outros.

19 Seguem-se os descendentes de Isaque, filho de Abraão.

20 Isaque tinha 40 anos quando casou com Rebeca, filha de Betuel, o arameu de Padan-Arã, e irmã de Labão.

21 Isaque orou insistentemente para que Rebeca lhe desse um filho, pois era estéril. O Senhor ouviu as suas orações e ela ficou grávida. 22 Dois bebés como que lutavam dentro dela. "Mas porque sou assim?" E pediu ao Senhor que a esclarecesse.

23 O Senhor disse-lhe: "Os filhos que tens no teu seio tornar-se-ão dois grandes povos rivais. Um deles será mais forte. E o mais velho terá de submeter-se ao mais novo."

24 Quando se cumpriu o seu tempo teve gémeos. 25 O primeiro a nascer era ruivo e estava coberto de pelo no corpo todo. Então chamaram-lhe Esaú*25.25 O nome do irmão de Jacob é homófono de uma palavra hebraica que significa cabelo.. 26 O outro vinha agarrado ao calcanhar do irmão. Por isso, lhe puseram o nome de Jacob*25.26 Que significa enganar, agarrar o calcanhar, suplantador.. Tinha Isaque 60 anos quando lhe nasceram estes gémeos.

27 Entretanto, os meninos cresceram; Esaú fez-se um hábil caçador, enquanto Jacob tinha um feitio sossegado e preferia ficar em casa. 28 Isaque gostava muito de Esaú, porque a caça também era muito do seu gosto. Rebeca tinha uma predileção especial por Jacob.

29 Um dia, Jacob estava a preparar um guisado quando chegou Esaú, exausto de correr pelos campos à procura de caça. 30 "Deixa-me comer desse guisado apetitoso e vermelho que aí tens!" Foi por isso que lhe ficou a alcunha de Edom (vermelho). 31 "Está bem", disse Jacob. "Mas em troca dás-me o teu direito de filho mais velho." 32 "De acordo. Para que me há de servir isso se estou a desfalecer, quase a morrer!" 33 "Então jura-me diante de Deus que esse direito há de ser meu!" E Esaú jurou, vendendo assim o seu direito de filho primogénito ao irmão mais novo. 34 Jacob deu-lhe o guisado de lentilhas que estava a preparar e o acompanhamento. Esaú comeu e bebeu e foi-se embora, indiferente à perda dos seus direitos de filho mais velho.

1 Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah. 2 And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah. 3 And Jokshan begat Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim. 4 And the sons of Midian; Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abidah, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.

5 And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac. 6 But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country. 7 And these are the days of the years of Abraham’s life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years. 8 Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people. 9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre; 10 The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth: there was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.

11 And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac dwelt by the well Lahai-roi.

12 Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s handmaid, bare unto Abraham: 13 And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam, 14 And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa, 15 Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah:*25.15 Hadar: or, Hadad 16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations. 17 And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people. 18 And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria: and he died in the presence of all his brethren.*25.18 died: Heb. fell

19 And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham begat Isaac: 20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan-aram, the sister to Laban the Syrian. 21 And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived. 22 And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD. 23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.

24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau. 26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them. 27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents. 28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.*25.28 he…: Heb. venison was in his mouth

29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint: 30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.*25.30 with…: Heb. with that red, with that red pottage*25.30 Edom: that is Red 31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. 32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?*25.32 at…: Heb. going to die 33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.
