1 Então José não se pôde conter mais e mandou: "Saiam todos!" As pessoas que estavam ali a ver a cena retiraram-se, ficando ele sozinho com os irmãos. 2 Depois começou a chorar, mas com tal emoção e intensidade que todos no palácio se deram conta disso, tendo a notícia chegado depressa aos ouvidos do Faraó.

3 "Eu sou José! Meu pai ainda está vivo?" Os irmãos, apanhados de surpresa, estavam de tal maneira espantados que não podiam proferir uma palavra. 4 "Cheguem-se cá!" Aproximaram-se e ele repetiu: "Eu sou José, o vosso irmão, que vocês venderam para o Egito. 5 Mas não se aflijam por causa do que me fizeram, porque afinal foi Deus quem o planeou para que vocês todos pudessem continuar com vida. 6 Esta fome, que já dura há dois anos, vai prolongar-se ainda por mais cinco, durante os quais não servirá de nada lavrar a terra; não haverá colheitas de espécie alguma. 7 Deus mandou-me para aqui para vos conservar com vida, assim como à vossa descendência. É uma grande salvação que ele vos dá. 8 Sim, com efeito foi Deus mesmo que me mandou para cá, e não vocês. Por isso, me pôs como conselheiro do Faraó, governador de toda esta nação, chefe sobre toda a terra do Egito.

9 Agora vão, vão depressa ter com meu pai. Comuniquem-lhe que o seu filho José lhe manda dizer que é governador de toda a terra do Egito e que lhe pede que venha depressa ter com ele! 10 Ficará a viver na fértil terra de Gosen e viverá assim perto de mim com os seus filhos, netos, rebanhos, o gado e tudo o que tem. 11 Tomarei ao meu cuidado o seu sustento durante os cinco anos que ainda restam de fome. Para que não venham a empobrecer, ele e todos os seus.

12 Vocês são testemunhas de todas estas promessas que acabo de fazer; vocês e o meu irmão Benjamim bem ouviram tudo o que eu disse. 13 Contem igualmente ao meu pai a alta posição que aqui tenho no Egito, como tudo e todos dependem de mim, e tragam-no depressa para cá."

14 Então, chorando de alegria, abraçou-se a Benjamim e este chorou também com ele. 15 Fez o mesmo com os outros irmãos, ficando ali a falar com eles.

16 O Faraó rapidamente teve conhecimento do que se passava: "Chegaram os irmãos de José", foram-lhe dizer. E toda a gente ficou muito satisfeita com aquilo, tanto o rei como os seus súbditos.

17 O Faraó mandou dizer a José: "Diz aos teus irmãos que carreguem os animais, que regressem à terra de Canaã, que tragam o pai assim como as suas famílias e venham viver para cá." 18 E frisou: "O rei vos dará o melhor solo do Egito e comereis o que há de melhor no país. 19 Diz igualmente aos teus irmãos que levem daqui carros do Egito para poderem transportar para cá as mulheres, os filhos e o vosso pai. 20 Não se preocupem quanto àquilo que tenham de deixar na vossa terra porque o melhor que há por cá será vosso."

21 José deu-lhes carros, como o rei mandara, e provisões para a viagem; 22 deu-lhes também roupas novas. Mas a Benjamim, em especial, deu-lhe cinco mudas de roupa e trezentas peças de prata. 23 Ao pai mandou dez jumentos carregados de belos presentes do Egito e de toda a espécie de alimentos para a viagem. 24 E mandou-os embora. "Sobretudo não discutam durante o caminho!", avisou-os à despedida.

25 E chegaram, vindos do Egito, à terra de Canaã, à casa do seu pai Jacob. 26 "José está vivo!", gritaram-lhe logo à chegada. "Ele é o governador de toda a terra do Egito!" Mas Jacob não reagiu, porque já não acreditava neles; o seu coração tinha perdido a sensibilidade. 27 Mas quando começaram a dar-lhe conta de tudo o que José lhe mandava dizer, quando viu os carros e todos os carregamentos com os alimentos e com o que José lhe enviava, o seu espírito reviveu. 28 E disse: "Agora acredito! O meu filho José está vivo e poderei vê-lo ainda antes de morrer!"

1 Then Joseph could not refrain himself before all them that stood by him; and he cried, Cause every man to go out from me. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt. 5 Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.*45.5 nor…: Heb. neither let there be anger in your eyes 6 For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest. 7 And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.*45.7 to preserve…: Heb. to put for you a remnant 8 So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt. 9 Haste ye, and go up to my father, and say unto him, Thus saith thy son Joseph, God hath made me lord of all Egypt: come down unto me, tarry not: 10 And thou shalt dwell in the land of Goshen, and thou shalt be near unto me, thou, and thy children, and thy children’s children, and thy flocks, and thy herds, and all that thou hast: 11 And there will I nourish thee; for yet there are five years of famine; lest thou, and thy household, and all that thou hast, come to poverty. 12 And, behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth that speaketh unto you. 13 And ye shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that ye have seen; and ye shall haste and bring down my father hither. 14 And he fell upon his brother Benjamin’s neck, and wept; and Benjamin wept upon his neck. 15 Moreover he kissed all his brethren, and wept upon them: and after that his brethren talked with him.

16 And the fame thereof was heard in Pharaoh’s house, saying, Joseph’s brethren are come: and it pleased Pharaoh well, and his servants.*45.16 pleased…: Heb. was good in the eyes of Pharaoh 17 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Say unto thy brethren, This do ye; lade your beasts, and go, get you unto the land of Canaan; 18 And take your father and your households, and come unto me: and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and ye shall eat the fat of the land. 19 Now thou art commanded, this do ye; take you wagons out of the land of Egypt for your little ones, and for your wives, and bring your father, and come. 20 Also regard not your stuff; for the good of all the land of Egypt is yours.*45.20 regard…: Heb. let not your eye spare, etc. 21 And the children of Israel did so: and Joseph gave them wagons, according to the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provision for the way.*45.21 commandment: Heb. mouth 22 To all of them he gave each man changes of raiment; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver, and five changes of raiment. 23 And to his father he sent after this manner; ten asses laden with the good things of Egypt, and ten she asses laden with corn and bread and meat for his father by the way.*45.23 laden…: Heb. carrying 24 So he sent his brethren away, and they departed: and he said unto them, See that ye fall not out by the way.

25 And they went up out of Egypt, and came into the land of Canaan unto Jacob their father, 26 And told him, saying, Joseph is yet alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob’s heart fainted, for he believed them not.*45.26 Jacob’s: Heb. his 27 And they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said unto them: and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived: 28 And Israel said, It is enough; Joseph my son is yet alive: I will go and see him before I die.
