1 Abraão era agora já muito idoso e o Senhor o tinha abençoado em tudo. 2 Um dia, mandou chamar o encarregado da administração da sua casa que era quem há mais tempo trabalhava para ele.

3 "Põe a tua mão debaixo de mim e jura-me solenemente pelo Senhor, o Deus do céu e da Terra, que não deixarás que o meu filho se case com uma das raparigas desta terra em que habito, 4 mas que irás à minha terra de origem e lá procurarás uma mulher para ele entre os meus parentes."

5 "Supõe que eu não consigo encontrar uma moça que esteja disposta a vir de tão longe? Deverei, se assim acontecer, fazer voltar o teu filho para lá, para viver com os seus familiares?"

6 "Não! Nunca faças tal coisa! 7 Porque o Senhor, o Deus dos céus, disse-me que deixasse essa terra e o meu povo, e prometeu que me daria esta terra, a mim e aos meus descendentes. Ele enviará o seu anjo à tua frente e fará que encontres ali uma rapariga para mulher do meu filho. 8 Se ela não quiser vir, ficarás livre deste juramento. Mas em caso nenhum farás com que o meu filho volte para lá."

9 Então o mordomo, administrador da fazenda de Abraão, colocou a mão debaixo da coxa de Abraão, para significar solenemente que seguiria à risca todas as suas instruções. 10 Preparou dez dos camelos do seu patrão, carregou-os com amostras do que de melhor havia na casa de Abraão, porque tudo estava nas suas mãos, e partiu para a Mesopotâmia, para a localidade em que vivia Naor. 11 Quando ali chegou fez ajoelhar os camelos fora da cidade, junto de uma fonte. Era o final da tarde, altura em que as moças da povoação vinham tirar água.

12 "Ó Senhor, tu que és o Deus do meu patrão Abraão", orou ele, "mostra agora a tua bondade para com ele, ajudando-me a alcançar o objetivo para o qual aqui venho. 13 Como vês, eu estou aqui ao pé desta fonte, enquanto as raparigas da localidade vêm buscar água. 14 O pedido que te faço é que quando pedir a uma delas que me dê de beber, se ela disser, ‘Sim, com certeza; e posso até tirar também água para os teus camelos!’, que seja essa a que tu designaste como mulher de Isaque. Assim, ficarei a saber que estás a agir com bondade para com Abraão."

15,16 Enquanto estava a orar sobre isto, chegou-se uma rapariga muito formosa chamada Rebeca, filha de Betuel, com o seu cântaro de água sobre o ombro. Betuel era filho de Milca e de Naor, irmão de Abraão. 17 Ele apressou-se a ir ao seu encontro e pediu que lhe desse a beber um pouco de água do seu cântaro.

18 "Sim, certamente!", e logo baixou a vasilha para que bebesse. 19 Quando acabou de beber acrescentou: "Vou também tirar água para os teus camelos, tanta quanto precisarem."

20 Vazou o resto da água da bilha na pia da fonte, e correu de novo ao poço, começando a puxar a água para eles, até que ficassem saciados. 21 O mordomo entretanto não disse mais nada; limitava-se a observá-la, por um lado admirado, por outro cuidadoso em verificar se ela ia até ao fim da sua ação, de forma a não ficar com dúvida sobre se era ou não a indicada pelo Senhor.

22 Por fim, quando os camelos acabaram de beber, ofereceu-lhe uns brincos de 6 gramas de ouro e duas pulseiras de 115 gramas de ouro.

23 "De quem és tu filha?", perguntou-lhe. "Haverá na casa do teu pai lugar para descansarmos?"

24 "Meu pai é Betuel, filho de Milca e de Naor. 25 Sim. Temos lugar para ficares, assim como palha e comida em abundância para os animais."

26 O homem ficou ali um momento de pé, com a cabeça inclinada, adorando o Senhor. 27 Depois disse em voz alta: "Eu te agradeço, Senhor, Deus do meu patrão Abraão! Porque continuas a ser bondoso e fiel no cumprimento das tuas promessas para com ele! E a mim, conduziste-me precisamente à família dos parentes do meu patrão!"

28 A rapariga correu a casa para contar tudo à mãe e à família. 29,30 Quando o seu irmão Labão lhe viu os brincos e as pulseiras nas mãos, e ao ouvir o relato que ela fez do encontro que tinha tido, correu por sua vez à fonte onde o homem ainda estava junto aos camelos, 31 e disse-lhe: "Vem, fica connosco, amigo; o Senhor está certamente contigo. Porque havias de ficar aqui quando temos um quarto pronto para te receber e lugar para recolher os camelos?"

32 Assim, foi para casa com Labão. Desataram os camelos, puseram palha para que se deitassem, e forneceram água para o homem e os camelos lavarem os pés.

33 E depois prepararam-se para jantar. Mas o administrador de Abraão disse: "Eu não queria começar a comer sem vos dizer a razão por que vim até aqui."

"Pois sim", respondeu-lhe Labão. "Diz o que tens a dizer."

34 "Eu sou o administrador da casa de Abraão", explicou. 35 "O Senhor tem enriquecido o meu patrão com toda a espécie de coisas boas, de tal forma que se tornou um grande senhor na terra em que vive. Deus tem-lhe dado rebanhos de ovelhas, manadas de vacas, uma fortuna em prata e ouro, muita gente ao seu serviço, e ainda camelos e jumentos. 36 Sara, a mulher do meu patrão, deu-lhe um filho, quando já estava numa idade avançada, e o moço agora vai herdar tudo quanto o pai tem. 37 Ora o meu patrão fez-me prometer solenemente que não deixaria que Isaque casasse com uma cananita, com uma das raparigas da terra em que habitamos, 38 mas que viria buscar aqui a esta terra distante, a terra dos seus parentes, à família do seu irmão, uma moça com quem seu filho casasse.

39 ‘Mas supondo que não encontro uma rapariga que queira vir comigo?’, perguntei-lhe. 40 ‘Há de querer com certeza! Porque o Senhor, em cuja presença sempre tenho andado, enviará o seu anjo contigo para que sejas bem sucedido na tua missão. Sim, procura uma moça entre os meus parentes na família do meu irmão. 41 Fizeste um juramento. Contudo, se eles não quiserem mandar alguém, então ficarás livre da promessa solene que fizeste.’

42 Pois bem. Esta tarde quando me aproximava da fonte à entrada da localidade, fiz esta oração: ‘Ó Senhor, Deus do meu patrão Abraão, se tens a intenção de me fazer bem sucedido nesta missão, peço-te que me guies da seguinte maneira: 43 Eu fico aqui junto da fonte, e direi a uma das raparigas que vier buscar água: "Dá-me a beber um pouco de água do teu cântaro." 44 Se ela responder: "Com certeza! E até poderei tirar também água para os teus camelos!", então por essa resposta verei que é essa rapariga que tu escolheste para casar com o filho do meu patrão!’

45 Pois ainda estava eu a dizer a Deus estas palavras quando Rebeca se aproximou com o cântaro de água sobre o ombro. Desceu à fonte, tirou água, encheu a vasilha e eu disse-lhe: ‘Por favor, dá-me de beber!’ 46 Imediatamente baixou o cântaro e eu bebi. Depois acrescentou: ‘Não só te dou a beber a ti como também poderei tirar água para os teus camelos!’ E assim fez.

47 Nessa altura, perguntei-lhe: ‘Quem é a tua família?’ Respondeu: ‘Sou filha de Betuel, filho de Naor e de Milca.’ E dei-lhe os brincos e as pulseiras. 48 Então inclinei a cabeça e adorei e louvei o Senhor, o Deus do meu patrão Abraão, por me ter conduzido pelo caminho exato de forma a encontrar a sobrinha do meu patrão para vir a ser a esposa do seu filho. 49 Sendo assim, digam-me se querem ou não fazer este bem ao meu patrão, o que é, aliás, uma coisa justa. Conforme a vossa resposta, saberei o que fazer a seguir, se devo ou não ir a outro sítio."

50 Então Labão e Betuel responderam: "Sem dúvida alguma que foi o Senhor que te conduziu até aqui. 51 Por isso, que queres tu que digamos mais? Pega na moça e parte! Que ela case com o filho do teu patrão, conforme o Senhor planeou."

52 Perante esta resposta, o mordomo de Abraão caiu de joelhos perante o Senhor. 53 Depois foi buscar várias joias em prata e ouro, assim como belas e ricas peças de vestuário para dar a Rebeca. E também à mãe e ao irmão ofereceu valiosos presentes.

54 Só então se sentaram para jantar e o mordomo de Abraão com aqueles que o acompanhavam passaram ali a noite. Logo pela manhã do dia seguinte, levantou-se e disse aos da casa: "Deixem-me regressar, para prestar contas ao meu patrão!"

55 "Mas nós queríamos que a pequena ficasse aqui connosco ainda uns dias, pelo menos uns dez! Depois sim, partiria contigo!"

56 Contudo, ele insistiu: "Não retenham o meu regresso! O Senhor fez com que a minha missão fosse bem sucedida. Por isso, deixem-me ir dar já conta de tudo ao meu patrão."

57 "Bom, então chamemos a moça para saber o que ela pensa." 58 Chamaram Rebeca: "Queres partir agora com este homem?"

"Sim, quero!"

59 Fizeram a despedida de Rebeca e mandaram com ela a sua ama. 60 E abençoaram-na desta forma: "Ó nossa irmã, que tu te tornes mãe de muitos milhões de pessoas! E que os teus descendentes sejam vitoriosos sobre os seus inimigos!"

61 Por fim, Rebeca e as suas criadas subiram para os camelos e partiram.

62 Entretanto, Isaque, que morava para os lados do sul, do Negueve, tinha regressado ao Poço de Laai-Roi. 63 Tinha saído ao entardecer a dar uma volta no campo e orar e reparou nos camelos que se aproximavam. 64 Por sua vez, Rebeca também viu Isaque que se aproximava e desmontou depressa do camelo em que vinha.

65 "Quem é aquele homem que vem ali pelos campos em nossa direção?", perguntou ao mordomo. "É o meu patrão." Então cobriu o rosto com um véu.

66 O mordomo contou a Isaque tudo o que acontecera. 67 Isaque trouxe Rebeca para a tenda da sua mãe e ela tornou-se sua mulher. E amou-a muito. Ela foi para ele um conforto muito especial, após a morte de sua mãe, Sara.

7 The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence. 8 And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again. 9 And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning that matter.

15 And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder. 16 And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.*24.16 very…: Heb. good of countenance 17 And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher. 18 And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. 19 And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking. 20 And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels. 21 And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not. 22 And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold;*24.22 earring: or, jewel for the forehead 23 And said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee: is there room in thy father’s house for us to lodge in? 24 And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor. 25 She said moreover unto him, We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in. 26 And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped the LORD. 27 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master’s brethren. 28 And the damsel ran, and told them of her mother’s house these things.

29 And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well. 30 And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister’s hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well. 31 And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.

32 And the man came into the house: and he ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men’s feet that were with him. 33 And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told mine errand. And he said, Speak on. 34 And he said, I am Abraham’s servant. 35 And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses. 36 And Sarah my master’s wife bare a son to my master when she was old: and unto him hath he given all that he hath. 37 And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell: 38 But thou shalt go unto my father’s house, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son. 39 And I said unto my master, Peradventure the woman will not follow me. 40 And he said unto me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father’s house: 41 Then shalt thou be clear from this my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they give not thee one, thou shalt be clear from my oath. 42 And I came this day unto the well, and said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, if now thou do prosper my way which I go: 43 Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink; 44 And she say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman whom the LORD hath appointed out for my master’s son. 45 And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the well, and drew water: and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee. 46 And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I drank, and she made the camels drink also. 47 And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands. 48 And I bowed down my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, which had led me in the right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter unto his son. 49 And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left. 50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good. 51 Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master’s son’s wife, as the LORD hath spoken. 52 And it came to pass, that, when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth. 53 And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things.*24.53 jewels: Heb. vessels

54 And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master. 55 And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.*24.55 a few…: or, a full year, or ten months 56 And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master. 57 And they said, We will call the damsel, and enquire at her mouth. 58 And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go. 59 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham’s servant, and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them.

61 And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.

62 And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahai-roi; for he dwelt in the south country. 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.*24.63 to meditate: or, to pray 64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel. 65 For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself. 66 And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done. 67 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.
