1 Assim, Isaque chamou a Jacob, abençoou-o e disse-lhe: "Não cases com nenhuma destas raparigas cananeias. 2 Vai antes para Padan-Arã, para a casa do teu avô Betuel, e casa com uma das tuas primas, filhas do teu tio Labão. 3 Que Deus, o Todo-Poderoso, te abençoe, te faça frutificar e te multiplique, para que sejas uma multidão de povos! 4 Que Deus te dê, a ti e aos teus descendentes, as ricas bênçãos que prometeu a Abraão. Que venhas a possuir esta terra, em que agora somos estrangeiros, pois que também já a tinha prometido a Abraão."

5 Desta forma, foi Jacob mandado pelo pai a Padan-Arã, à casa do seu tio Labão, irmão de sua mãe e filho de Betuel, o arameu.

6 Esaú deu-se conta de que o pai tinha abençoado Jacob e enviado-o a Padan-Arã, para procurar lá uma moça para casar, com o aviso severo de que nunca procurasse uma cananita. 7 Constatou que Jacob tinha concordado e tinha partido para Padan-Arã. 8 Esaú percebeu então que o pai não tinha em boa conta as mulheres de Canaã. 9 Então Esaú foi à terra do seu tio Ismael, e casou-se com uma das filhas de Ismael, além das que já tinha. Esta mulher com quem se casou, chamava-se Maalate, irmã de Nabaiote e filha do próprio Ismael, filho de Abraão.

10 Jacob partiu pois de Berseba a caminho de Harã. 11 Ao anoitecer, procurou um sítio onde passar a noite; procurou uma pedra que lhe servisse de cabeceira e adormeceu. 12 E sonhou com uma escada que ia da Terra ao céu e que os anjos de Deus subiam e desciam por ela. 13 No cimo da escada estava o Senhor que lhe disse: "Eu sou o Senhor, o Deus de Abraão e do teu pai Isaque. Esta terra em que estás deitado é tua. Dar-ta-ei a ti e aos teus descendentes. 14 Porque terás tantos descendentes como o pó da Terra; hão de cobrir a Terra do Oriente ao Ocidente e do Norte ao Sul. E todas as nações da Terra serão abençoadas por intermédio de ti e da tua descendência. 15 E mais ainda, eu estou contigo e te protegerei onde quer que fores; hei de tornar a trazer-te com segurança a esta terra. Serei contigo em todos os momentos, a fim de te dar tudo quanto te estou a prometer."

16 Jacob acordou: "O Senhor está neste lugar e eu não sabia!", exclamou. 17 E teve medo. "Que lugar tremendo! É mesmo a casa de Deus e a própria entrada do céu!"

18 De manhã levantou-se cedo, pegou na pedra sobre a qual tinha dormido, ergueu-a e colocou-a em forma de pilar, em sinal comemorativo, derramando azeite sobre ela. 19 E chamou àquele sítio Betel,*28.19 Isto é, Casa de Deus. ainda que o nome da localidade próxima fosse Luz.

20 E Jacob formulou este voto: "Se Deus estiver comigo e me proteger nesta viagem, se me der comida e roupa, 21 e me trouxer de novo em segurança à casa dos meus pais, então o Senhor será o meu Deus. 22 Este pilar tornar-se-á um local de adoração e comprometo-me a dar-lhe a décima parte de tudo quanto ele me der."

1 And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan. 2 Arise, go to Padan-aram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother’s father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother’s brother. 3 And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;*28.3 a multitude…: Heb. an assembly of people 4 And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.*28.4 wherein…: Heb. of thy sojournings 5 And Isaac sent away Jacob: and he went to Padan-aram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother.

6 When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padan-aram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan; 7 And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padan-aram; 8 And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;*28.8 pleased…: Heb. were evil in the eyes, etc 9 Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.*28.9 Mahalath: or, Bashemath

10 And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran.*28.10 Haran: Gr. Charran 11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep. 12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. 13 And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed; 14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.*28.14 spread…: Heb. break forth 15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not. 17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. 18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it. 19 And he called the name of that place Beth-el: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.*28.19 Beth-el: that is, The house of God 20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, 21 So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God: 22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.
