1 Então Jacob chamou todos os seus filhos e disse-lhes: "Juntem-se aqui, perto de mim e dir-vos-ei o que será de vocês no futuro.

2 Ouçam-me, ó filhos de Jacob,

escutem Israel, o vosso pai!

3 Rúben, tu és o mais velho,

o filho que eu tive na maturidade do meu vigor;

és o primeiro em categoria e em honra.

4 Mas inconstante como és, semelhante às vagas do mar,

deixarás de ser o mais excelente porque me desonraste,

deitando-te com uma das minhas mulheres,

profanando o meu leito.

5 Simeão e Levi são dois da mesma espécie;

são homens de violência e injustiça.

6 A minha alma manteve-se afastada deles,

não quis participar nos seus intentos secretos,

porque no seu ódio mataram homens,

na sua excitação mutilaram bois.

7 Maldita seja a sua fúria, pois foi feroz e cruel.

Por isso, espalharei os seus descendentes por todo o Israel.

8 Judá, os teus irmãos te louvarão.

Destruirás os teus inimigos.

Os filhos do teu pai se inclinarão perante ti.

9 És como um pequeno leão

que acabou de tragar a sua presa.

Assenta-se como um forte leão e deita-se como uma leoa;

quem ousará despertá-lo?

10 O cetro real não deixará de lhe pertencer,

até que venha Silo, a quem todo o mundo obedecerá.

11 Ele amarra o seu jumentinho à melhor videira,

e lava os seus fatos no vinho.

12 Seus olhos são mais escuros do que o vinho,

seus dentes mais brancos que o leite.

13 Zebulão habitará à beira do mar

e terá os portos de que se servirão os navios.

Os seus limites estender-se-ão até Sídon.

14 Issacar é um possante animal de carga

que repousa no meio dos fardos.

15 Quando vê que o seu repouso é bom,

e a terra é agradável para se viver,

de boa vontade se entregou ao trabalho

e aceitou a tarefa que lhe era imposta.

16 Dan governará o seu povo

tal como qualquer outra tribo de Israel.

17 Ele será como uma serpente no caminho,

como uma víbora à beira da estrada

que morde as patas do cavalo,

o qual lança o cavaleiro ao chão.

18 Eu confio na tua salvação, Senhor!

19 Gad será atacado por um bando de guerrilheiros,

mas ele os atacará pelos calcanhares.

20 Aser produzirá alimento abundante

e de finíssima qualidade, próprio de reis.

21 Naftali é como uma gazela à solta,

produzindo lindas crias.

22 José é como uma árvore frutífera,

produzindo frutos junto duma fonte.

Os seus ramos passam acima do muro.

23 Foi gravemente ferido por aqueles

que se atiraram sobre ele e o perseguiram.

24 Mas o seu arco permeneceu firme,

e os seus braços jamais esmoreceram,

diante do Poderoso de Jacob,

o seu Pastor, o Rochedo de Israel.

25 Que o Deus dos teus pais, o Todo-Poderoso,

te abençoe com as bênçãos dos céus

e também com as da Terra,

as bênçãos dos seios, assim como as da madre,

26 Que as bênçãos do teu pai ultrapassem as bênçãos das antigas montanhas,

que chegam às alturas das colinas eternas.

Estas serão as bênçãos que descerão sobre a cabeça de José,

que teve de se separar dos irmãos.

27 Benjamim é um lobo que devora a sua presa.

Devora os seus inimigos logo de manhã

e pela tarde reparte os despojos."

28 Estas são as bênçãos que Israel deu aos doze filhos.

29,30 Depois disse-lhes: "Vou morrer em breve. Vocês deverão pôr-me junto dos meus pais na terra de Canaã, na gruta que está no campo de Macpela, diante de Mamre, o campo que Abraão comprou a Efrom, o hitita, como terreno para sepultura. 31 Foi lá que sepultaram Abraão e Sara, a sua mulher; e ainda Isaque mais a sua mulher Rebeca; eu próprio ali coloquei o corpo de Leia. 32 Essa gruta e o campo foram comprados pelo meu avô Abraão aos filhos de Hete."

33 Tendo acabado de dar aquelas profecias e estas indicações aos filhos, deitou-se, acomodou-se na cama, deu um último suspiro e faleceu, juntando-se aos seus antepassados.

3 Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power: 4 Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.*49.4 thou shalt…: Heb. do not thou excel*49.4 he went…: or, my couch is gone

5 Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations.*49.5 instruments…: or, their swords are weapons of violence 6 O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall.*49.6 digged…: or, houghed oxen 7 Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

8 Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father’s children shall bow down before thee. 9 Judah is a lion’s whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up? 10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. 11 Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass’s colt unto the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes: 12 His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk.

13 Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea; and he shall be for an haven of ships; and his border shall be unto Zidon.

14 Issachar is a strong ass couching down between two burdens: 15 And he saw that rest was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto tribute.

16 Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. 17 Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward.*49.17 an adder: Heb. an arrow-snake 18 I have waited for thy salvation, O LORD.

19 Gad, a troop shall overcome him: but he shall overcome at the last.

20 Out of Asher his bread shall be fat, and he shall yield royal dainties.

21 Naphtali is a hind let loose: he giveth goodly words.

22 Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall:*49.22 branches: Heb. daughters 23 The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him: 24 But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:) 25 Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb: 26 The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.

27 Benjamin shall ravin as a wolf: in the morning he shall devour the prey, and at night he shall divide the spoil.

28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel: and this is it that their father spake unto them, and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them. 29 And he charged them, and said unto them, I am to be gathered unto my people: bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 In the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a buryingplace. 31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah. 32 The purchase of the field and of the cave that is therein was from the children of Heth. 33 And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.
