1 Ó Senhor, sempre me tens feito justiça, quando te trago algum caso para que sejas tu a decidir! Permite-me agora que te traga esta queixa: Por que razão são os maus tão prósperos? Porque é que os malvados são tão felizes? 2 Plantaste-os e eles criaram raízes, os seus negócios prosperam. Multiplicam-se os seus ganhos e tornam-se ricos. Depois dizem: "Graças a Deus!" Mas nos seus corações não querem saber de ti para nada. 3 Quanto a mim, Senhor, tu conheces o meu coração, vês tudo a meu respeito. Senhor, empurra-os para o matadouro como ovelhas!

4 Durante quanto tempo suportará ainda esta terra todos os seus excessos? Até a erva do campo chora e se lamenta por causa dos seus atos malvados! Já os animais selvagens e as aves se foram, deixando deserta a terra. Mesmo assim, o povo ainda diz: "Deus não nos condenará! Estamos perfeitamente seguros!"

5 Deus respondeu-me: "Se te cansas de correr com meros homens, como poderás competir com cavalos? Se tropeças numa terra plana, que farás quando correres nos matagais, na altura da enchente do Jordão? 6 Até os teus irmãos, a tua própria família se voltaram contra ti. Formaram uma intriga, convocando a multidão para te linchar. Não confies neles! Por muito bem que falem, não creias neles!

7 Abandonei o meu povo, a minha possessão; entreguei aqueles que eu amava aos seus inimigos. 8 O meu povo rugiu contra mim como um leão das florestas, por isso, tratei-os como se os odiasse. 9 O meu povo caiu; trarei sobre eles bandos de aves de rapina e animais selvagens para comerem a carne dos seus cadáveres.

10 Muitos chefes estrangeiros assolaram a minha vinha, pisaram os seus cachos e fizeram de toda aquela beleza uma desolação. 11 Transformaram-na num deserto; estou a ouvir os seus gritos lamentosos. Toda a terra está desvastada e ninguém se ocupa dela. 12 Exércitos destruidores rasgam a terra; a espada do Senhor devora tudo duma ponta à outra do país; nada lhe escapa; não há paz para ninguém. 13 O meu povo semeou trigo e colhe espinhos; trabalharam bem duro na terra e nada recolheram. Segarão unicamente uma colheita de vergonha, porque a dura cólera do Senhor caiu sobre eles."

14 Agora o Senhor dirige esta mensagem às nações perversas, aos povos que rodeiam Israel: "Explusar-vos-ei das vossas terras, mas arrancarei a casa de Judá do meio deles. 15 Depois voltarei e terei compaixão de todos. Tornarei a trazer-vos de novo para casa, para as vossas terras, cada homem para a sua terra. 16 E se estas nações pagãs aprenderem realmente os caminhos do meu povo e me proclamarem como o seu Deus, em vez de Baal, a quem ensinaram o meu povo a adorar, serão estabelecidas juntamente com o meu povo. 17 Mas toda aquela nação que recusar obedecer-me será de novo expulsa e liquidada", diz o Senhor.

5 If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan? 6 For even thy brethren, and the house of thy father, even they have dealt treacherously with thee; yea, they have called a multitude after thee: believe them not, though they speak fair words unto thee.*12.6 they have called…: or, they cried after thee fully*12.6 fair…: Heb. good things

14 Thus saith the LORD against all mine evil neighbours, that touch the inheritance which I have caused my people Israel to inherit; Behold, I will pluck them out of their land, and pluck out the house of Judah from among them. 15 And it shall come to pass, after that I have plucked them out I will return, and have compassion on them, and will bring them again, every man to his heritage, and every man to his land. 16 And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, The LORD liveth; as they taught my people to swear by Baal; then shall they be built in the midst of my people. 17 But if they will not obey, I will utterly pluck up and destroy that nation, saith the LORD.
