1 Então o Senhor disse-me: "Mesmo que Moisés e Samuel se pusessem perante mim, rogando a favor deste povo, mesmo assim eu não ajudaria essa gente. Que se vão embora! Que se tirem da minha vista! 2 E se te perguntarem: ‘Mas para onde iríamos nós?’, diz-lhes que o Senhor lhes responde: ‘Os que estão destinados a morrer, para a morte; os que tiverem de morrer à espada, para a espada; os que estão condenados a morrer à fome, para a fome; os que tiverem de ficar cativos, para o cativeiro.’

3 Lançarei contra eles quatro espécies de destruidores, diz o Senhor: a espada para os matar, cães para os dilacerar, aves de rapina e animais selvagens para devorar e acabar com aquilo que restar dos outros. 4 Por causa de toda a maldade que Manassés, filho de Ezequias, rei de Judá, praticou em Jerusalém, castigar-te-ei tão severamente que o teu destino fará arrepiar todos os povos da Terra.

5 Quem virá a sentir tristeza por ti, Jerusalém? Quem chorará por ti? Quem se incomodará sequer para saber quem és tu? 6 Tu desprezaste-me e viraste-me as costas. Por isso, estenderei o meu punho fechado contra ti, para te destruir. Já estou cansado de estar sempre a dar-vos novas oportunidades. 7 Peneirar-te-ei à porta das tuas cidades e tirar-te-ei tudo o que te é querido; destruirei o meu próprio povo, porque se recusa a voltar para mim e deixar os seus maus caminhos. 8 Haverá viúvas sem conta e em pleno dia trarei a morte sobre os jovens e o pesar às suas mães. Farei com que a angústia e o terror caiam sobre eles repentinamente. 9 Uma mãe de sete filhos desfalecerá de aflição, porque todos os seus filhos terão sido mortos. O Sol pôs-se enquanto ainda era dia e ali fica ela, agora desfilhada, porque a guerra lhe roubou todos os que saíram do seu seio!", diz o Senhor.

10 Então eu disse: "Ai de mim, minha mãe! Mais valia que eu tivesse morrido ao nascer, porque sou odiado para onde quer que vá! Não sou nenhum credor que lhes tivesse emprestado com usura e estivesse a reclamar os juros ou o dinheiro! Não lhes devo nada, tão-pouco, e mesmo assim me amaldiçoam!"

11 Respondeu o Senhor: "Libertar-te-ei seguramente para um bom fim. Farei com que os teus inimigos venham interceder junto de ti, quando sofrerem calamidades e estiverem em angústia!

12 Poderá um homem quebrar barras de ferro, ferro do norte ou de bronze? Da mesma forma, também não pode ser quebrada a vontade rebelde deste povo. 13 Assim entregarei todos os vossos bens, as vossas posses, como despojo ao inimigo. 14 Este vos levará como escravos para uma terra onde nunca estiveram anteriormente, porque a minha ira arde como fogo e te consumirei."

15 Então eu disse: "Senhor, sabes que tem sido por tua causa que tenho sofrido. Tenho-lhes pregado a tua palavra e por isso sou perseguido. Não deixes que me matem! Livra-me das suas garras e dá-lhes o que merecem! 16 São as tuas palavras que me sustêm; são o alimento da minha alma faminta, trazem alegria ao meu coração amargurado e comunicam-me satisfação. Como me sinto orgulhoso em me chamar pelo teu nome, ó Senhor, Deus dos exércitos! 17 Não me juntei às gentes nas suas reuniões e festins de risota e malícia. Preferi ficar só, sob a tua mão. Rebento de indignação perante os seus pecados e mesmo assim senti que me faltavas quando precisei de ti! 18 Permitiste que continuassem a perseguir-me. Será que eles não pensam em deixar de me ferir? A tua ajuda parece-me tão incerta como um ribeiro que corre da montanha; por vezes cheio de águas torrenciais, noutras alturas sem gota de água."

19 O Senhor retorquiu: "Para com esse falar insensato! Só se voltares a confiar em mim é que poderás ser meu porta-voz! És tu quem tem de os influenciar a eles e não eles a ti! 20 Combaterão contra ti como um exército que sitia uma cidade com muros de bronze. Não prevalecerão contra ti, porque eu estou contigo para te proteger e livrar, diz o Senhor. 21 Sim, podes ter a certeza de que te libertarei dessa gente malvada! Livrar-te-ei das suas mãos violentas!"

1 Then said the LORD unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth. 2 And it shall come to pass, if they say unto thee, Whither shall we go forth? then thou shalt tell them, Thus saith the LORD; Such as are for death, to death; and such as are for the sword, to the sword; and such as are for the famine, to the famine; and such as are for the captivity, to the captivity. 3 And I will appoint over them four kinds, saith the LORD: the sword to slay, and the dogs to tear, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the earth, to devour and destroy.*15.3 kinds: Heb. families 4 And I will cause them to be removed into all kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasseh the son of Hezekiah king of Judah, for that which he did in Jerusalem.*15.4 cause…: Heb. give them for a removing 5 For who shall have pity upon thee, O Jerusalem? or who shall bemoan thee? or who shall go aside to ask how thou doest?*15.5 how…: Heb. of thy peace? 6 Thou hast forsaken me, saith the LORD, thou art gone backward: therefore will I stretch out my hand against thee, and destroy thee; I am weary with repenting. 7 And I will fan them with a fan in the gates of the land; I will bereave them of children, I will destroy my people, since they return not from their ways.*15.7 children: or, whatsoever is dear 8 Their widows are increased to me above the sand of the seas: I have brought upon them against the mother of the young men a spoiler at noonday: I have caused him to fall upon it suddenly, and terrors upon the city.*15.8 the mother…: or, the mother city a young man spoiling, etc, or, the mother and the young men 9 She that hath borne seven languisheth: she hath given up the ghost; her sun is gone down while it was yet day: she hath been ashamed and confounded: and the residue of them will I deliver to the sword before their enemies, saith the LORD.

10 Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent on usury, nor men have lent to me on usury; yet every one of them doth curse me. 11 The LORD said, Verily it shall be well with thy remnant; verily I will cause the enemy to entreat thee well in the time of evil and in the time of affliction.*15.11 cause…: or, intreat the enemy for thee 12 Shall iron break the northern iron and the steel? 13 Thy substance and thy treasures will I give to the spoil without price, and that for all thy sins, even in all thy borders. 14 And I will make thee to pass with thine enemies into a land which thou knowest not: for a fire is kindled in mine anger, which shall burn upon you.

15 O LORD, thou knowest: remember me, and visit me, and revenge me of my persecutors; take me not away in thy longsuffering: know that for thy sake I have suffered rebuke. 16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.*15.16 I am…: Heb. thy name is called upon me 17 I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand: for thou hast filled me with indignation. 18 Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuseth to be healed? wilt thou be altogether unto me as a liar, and as waters that fail?*15.18 fail: Heb. be not sure?

19 Therefore thus saith the LORD, If thou return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them. 20 And I will make thee unto this people a fenced brasen wall: and they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the LORD. 21 And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem thee out of the hand of the terrible.
