1 Ainda noutra ocasião o Senhor me falou. 2 "Não deverás casar nem ter filhos aqui nesta terra. 3 Porque as crianças que nascerem neste lugar, tal como os seus pais, 4 terão de morrer de doenças terríveis e ninguém chorará por elas nem enterrará os corpos que ficarem pelo chão; serão como esterco nos campos. Morrerão por causa da guerra e da fome; os seus cadáveres serão levados pelas aves do céu e por animais selvagens. 5 Não os lamentes, nem chores, porque lhes retirei a minha proteção e a minha paz; retirei-lhes a minha compaixão e as minhas misericórdias. 6 Tanto grandes como pequenos morrerão nesta terra, sem serem enterrados e sem serem chorados; ninguém de entre os seus amigos porá sinais de luto, fazendo incisões ou rapando a cabeça. 7 Ninguém consolará os que choram, dando-lhes comida ou enviando-lhes um copo de vinho como expressão de pesar pela morte dos seus parentes.

8 Como sinal desses tristes dias que hão de vir, não participes nas suas festanças e receções, nem sequer tomes qualquer refeição com eles. 9 Porque o Senhor dos exércitos, o Deus de Israel, diz: Ainda durante o tempo da tua vida, sob os teus próprios olhos, farei cessar o riso e a alegria nesta terra, as canções alegres, as bodas, a felicidade dos que se casam.

10 Quando lhes disseres tudo isto, se te perguntarem: ‘Afinal, por que razão o Senhor decretou todas estas coisas tão terríveis contra nós? Que fizemos nós para merecer um tratamento desta natureza? Qual é o nosso pecado contra o Senhor, nosso Deus?’ 11 Diz-lhes que a resposta do Senhor é esta: É porque os vossos pais me esqueceram e adoraram outros deuses, prestando-lhes culto e servindo-os; não guardaram a minha Lei. 12 Quanto a vocês, foram piores até do que os vossos próprios pais, tendo seguido o que era mau, segundo as tendências dos vossos corações, recusando ouvir-me. 13 Eis a razão por que vos lançarei para fora desta terra, para uma terra estrangeira que nem vocês nem os vossos antepassados conheceram. Se quiserem, poderão continuar a adorar ali os vossos ídolos pois, quanto a mim, não vos concederei os meus favores!

14 Mas virá o dia, diz o Senhor, em que não se dirá mais: ‘Tão certo como vive o Senhor que tirou os filhos de Israel do Egito!’ 15 Mas o único tema de conversa será o facto de Deus trazer de novo o seu povo para casa, vindo das terras do norte, e de todas as terras para onde os tinha exilado. Por isso dirão: ‘Vive o Senhor que trouxe o seu povo das terras para onde os tinha espalhado e os fez voltar à terra dos seus antepassados!’

16 Enviarei pescadores para que apanhem este povo. Depois enviarei muitos caçadores, diz o Senhor, para os caçarem em todas as montanhas e em todas as serras, até nos penhascos inacessíveis, para onde quer que tenham fugido para escapar aos meus olhos. 17 Os meus olhos vigiam-nos atentamente; não tenham ilusões quanto a esconderem de mim a sua iniquidade. 18 Castiga-los-ei duplamente por todos os seus pecados, pois não só contaminaram a terra com esses abomináveis ídolos, como também a encheram com toda a espécie de iniquidades."

19 Ó Senhor, a minha força e a minha fortaleza, o meu refúgio em dias de perturbação, nações em todo o mundo virão dizer-te: "Os nossos pais foram loucos, porque puseram-se indignamente a adorar ídolos e falsidades! 20 Alguma vez os homens podem fazer deuses? É evidente que os deuses que eles fazem não são deuses nenhuns!"

21 "E quando se chegarem a mim nesse espírito, dar-lhes-ei a conhecer o meu poder e a minha força; fá-los-ei compreender, enfim, que o meu nome é Senhor.

1 The word of the LORD came also unto me, saying, 2 Thou shalt not take thee a wife, neither shalt thou have sons or daughters in this place. 3 For thus saith the LORD concerning the sons and concerning the daughters that are born in this place, and concerning their mothers that bare them, and concerning their fathers that begat them in this land; 4 They shall die of grievous deaths; they shall not be lamented; neither shall they be buried; but they shall be as dung upon the face of the earth: and they shall be consumed by the sword, and by famine; and their carcases shall be meat for the fowls of heaven, and for the beasts of the earth. 5 For thus saith the LORD, Enter not into the house of mourning, neither go to lament nor bemoan them: for I have taken away my peace from this people, saith the LORD, even lovingkindness and mercies.*16.5 mourning: or, mourning feast 6 Both the great and the small shall die in this land: they shall not be buried, neither shall men lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them: 7 Neither shall men tear themselves for them in mourning, to comfort them for the dead; neither shall men give them the cup of consolation to drink for their father or for their mother.*16.7 tear…: or, break bread for them 8 Thou shalt not also go into the house of feasting, to sit with them to eat and to drink. 9 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will cause to cease out of this place in your eyes, and in your days, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride.

10 And it shall come to pass, when thou shalt shew this people all these words, and they shall say unto thee, Wherefore hath the LORD pronounced all this great evil against us? or what is our iniquity? or what is our sin that we have committed against the LORD our God? 11 Then shalt thou say unto them, Because your fathers have forsaken me, saith the LORD, and have walked after other gods, and have served them, and have worshipped them, and have forsaken me, and have not kept my law; 12 And ye have done worse than your fathers; for, behold, ye walk every one after the imagination of his evil heart, that they may not hearken unto me:*16.12 imagination: or, stubbornness 13 Therefore will I cast you out of this land into a land that ye know not, neither ye nor your fathers; and there shall ye serve other gods day and night; where I will not shew you favour.

14 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more be said, The LORD liveth, that brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt; 15 But, The LORD liveth, that brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the lands whither he had driven them: and I will bring them again into their land that I gave unto their fathers.

16 Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the LORD, and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks. 17 For mine eyes are upon all their ways: they are not hid from my face, neither is their iniquity hid from mine eyes. 18 And first I will recompense their iniquity and their sin double; because they have defiled my land, they have filled mine inheritance with the carcases of their detestable and abominable things. 19 O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit. 20 Shall a man make gods unto himself, and they are no gods? 21 Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is The LORD.*16.21 The LORD: or, JEHOVAH
