1 Há uma lei em como um homem que se divorcie duma mulher, se esta vier a casar com outro, não poderá casar novamente com ela, porque dessa forma a terra tornar-se-ia corrompida. Ora tu deixaste-me para te juntares a muitos amantes e, mesmo assim, queres tornar para mim?, diz o Senhor. 2 Haverá algum lugar em toda a terra onde tu não te tenhas manchado com os teus adultérios, esses cultos que prestas a outros deuses? Sentas-te como uma prostituta à beira da estrada à espera de clientes. Pões-te sozinha ali, como um beduíno no deserto. Poluíste a terra com as tuas prostituições. 3 É por isso que até as chuvas da primavera te falham, porque és uma prostituta que perdeu completamente a vergonha. 4 E ainda tens cara para me dizer: ‘Ó pai, tu foste sempre para nós um amigo! 5 Não vais ficar zangado com essas coisas tão pequenas! Vais com certeza esquecê-las!’ É essa a vossa conversa e, entretanto, continuam a fazer o mal que vos apetece."

6 Esta é a mensagem que o Senhor me transmitiu durante o reinado do rei Josias: "Tens reparado no que Israel está a fazer? Como uma mulher luxuriosa, que se prostitui a cada momento, assim Israel adorou outros deuses em cada colina, debaixo de cada árvore frondosa. 7 Eu sempre pensei que algum dia ela voltaria para mim e tornaria a ser minha, mas não voltou! E Judá, a sua infiel irmã, esteve a ver tudo. 8 Apesar disso, não prestou atenção, não ligou, mesmo quando me divorciei da sua desleal irmã Israel. Agora também me abandonou e entregou-se à prostituição, indo atrás doutros deuses para lhes prestar culto. 9 E fê-lo com toda a ligeireza; para ela era como se fosse coisa sem importância adorar ídolos de madeira e pedra. Dessa forma, a terra poluiu-se e sujou-se grandemente. 10 Passados tempos, esta infiel voltou para mim, mas a sua tristeza era inteiramente fingida, diz o Senhor Deus. 11 De facto, até a enganosa Israel é menos culpada do que a falsa Judá!

12 Portanto, vai e diz a Israel: Ó Israel, meu povo pecador, vem outra vez para casa, porque eu sou misericordioso e não ficarei irado eternamente contra ti! 13 Apenas te peço que reconheças a tua culpa, que admitas que te rebelaste contra o Senhor, o teu Deus, e que cometeste adultério contra mim ao adorares ídolos sob toda a espécie de árvores! Confessa que recusaste seguir-me! 14 Ó filhos pecadores, voltem para mim, porque eu sou o vosso Senhor e tornarei a trazer-vos para Sião; um daqui, outro dacolá, de toda a parte para onde foram espalhados. 15 E dar-vos-ei pastores, de acordo com o meu próprio coração, que vos conduzirão com sabedoria e compreensão.

16 Então, quando a vossa terra estiver de novo cheia de gente, diz o Senhor, nunca mais desejarão os bons velhos tempos de antigamente em que tinham no vosso meio a arca da aliança de Deus. Não terão saudades desses dias, nem sequer pensarão neles; não precisarão de tornar a reconstruir a arca. 17 Pois o Senhor, ele próprio, estará no vosso meio e a cidade inteira de Jerusalém será conhecida como sendo ela mesma o trono do Senhor. Todas as nações virão ter com ele ali e nunca mais andarão segundo os propósitos do seu coração maligno. 18 Nesse tempo, o povo de Judá e o povo de Israel voltarão juntos do exílio, no norte, para a terra que dei aos seus antepassados por posse, para sempre. 19 E pensei como seria maravilhoso que vocês aqui estivessem entre os meus filhos! Fiz planos de vos dar parte desta bela terra, a melhor do mundo. Previ que me chamariam pai e imaginei que nunca mais me deixariam. 20 Mas vocês atraiçoaram-me; foram-se embora e deram-se a uma multidão de deuses estranhos; foram como uma mulher infiel que deixa o seu marido."

21 Ouço vozes chorando alto do cimo das montanhas, vozes de lamento e de súplica. São os filhos de Israel que viraram as costas a Deus e se esqueceram do Senhor, do seu Deus.

22 "Ó meus filhos rebeldes, voltem de novo para mim e curar-vos-ei dos vossos pecados!"

Eles respondem, "Sim, voltaremos porque tu és o Senhor, nosso Deus! 23 Foi um erro adorar ídolos sobre os altos e fazer orgias nas montanhas. Só no Senhor, nosso Deus, pode Israel encontrar ajuda e salvação para sempre. 24 Desde a nossa mocidade, deuses vergonhosos consumiram tudo o que os nossos pais tinham; rebanhos, gado, filhos e filhas. 25 Aqui estamos agora, cobertos de vergonha e desonra, porque tanto nós como os nossos pais pecámos, já desde a juventude, contra o Senhor, nosso Deus, e não lhe obedecemos."

1 They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? but thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD.*3.1 They say: Heb. Saying 2 Lift up thine eyes unto the high places, and see where thou hast not been lien with. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness. 3 Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; and thou hadst a whore’s forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed. 4 Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth? 5 Will he reserve his anger for ever? will he keep it to the end? Behold, thou hast spoken and done evil things as thou couldest.

6 The LORD said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot. 7 And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it. 8 And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also. 9 And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with stocks.*3.9 lightness: or, fame 10 And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart, but feignedly, saith the LORD.*3.10 feignedly: Heb. in falsehood 11 And the LORD said unto me, The backsliding Israel hath justified herself more than treacherous Judah.

12 Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the LORD; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever. 13 Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the LORD thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the LORD. 14 Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion: 15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding. 16 And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more.*3.16 come to mind: Heb. come upon the heart*3.16 that…: or, it be magnified 17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart.*3.17 imagination: or, stubbornness 18 In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.*3.18 with: or, to*3.18 given…: or, caused your fathers to possess 19 But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, Thou shalt call me, My father; and shalt not turn away from me.*3.19 from me: Heb. from after me*3.19 a goodly…: Heb. an heritage of glory, or, beauty*3.19 pleasant…: Heb. land of desire

20 Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD.*3.20 husband: Heb. friend 21 A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel: for they have perverted their way, and they have forgotten the LORD their God. 22 Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God. 23 Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel. 24 For shame hath devoured the labour of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. 25 We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.
