1 De novo o Senhor me falou. 2 "Vai e grita isto nas ruas de Jerusalém: O Senhor diz: Lembro-me do tempo em que procuravas pressurosamente agradar-me, tal como um jovem esposo, em que me amavas e me seguias, mesmo nas terras secas do deserto. 3 Nesses dias Israel era um povo santo, o primeiro dos meus filhos. Quem lhe fizesse mal seria considerado profundamente culpado e grande prejuízo caía sobre quem lhe tocasse."

4 Ó descendentes de Jacob e gentes da casa de Israel, o Senhor pergunta: 5 "Porque é que os vossos pais me abandonaram? Que mal encontraram em mim, a ponto de se desviarem e de se porem a adorar ídolos sem valor, tornando-se eles próprios sem valor? 6 Eles não se preocuparam em perguntar: ‘Onde está o Senhor que nos trouxe seguramente para fora do Egito e nos conduziu através do deserto estéril, duma terra de sequidão e de pedregulhos, de sombras tenebrosas e de morte, onde ninguém vive nem sequer viaja?’ 7 Eu vos trouxe para uma terra fértil, onde puderam comer dos seus frutos e de todas as boas coisas que generosamente produz, mas vocês transformaram-na numa terra de pecado e corrupção, tendo feito desse meu território uma abominação. 8 Os sacerdotes não perguntaram: ‘Onde está o Senhor?’ Os seus juízes ignoraram-me; os responsáveis por ensinar a Lei revoltaram-se contra mim e os profetas puseram-se a falar em nome de Baal, gastando o tempo em coisas insensatas.

9 Contudo, continuarei a pleitear convosco, para que voltem para mim, e até com os filhos dos vossos filhos!

10,11 Olhem e vejam se podem encontrar outra nação assim, que tenha trocado os deuses que tinha antes por outros novos, ainda que não se trate de deuses nenhuns. Vão ver a ocidente, para os lados da ilha de Chipre; mandem gente informar-se na direção do oriente, dos desertos de Quedar. Verifiquem se ali alguém alguma vez ouviu coisas tão estranhas como estas. 12 Os céus ficam desolados com estas coisas. 13 Porque o meu povo cometeu dois pecados! Deixaram-me a mim, a fonte da água da vida e, além disso, cavaram cisternas rotas que não podem conter água!

14 Por que razão se tornou Israel numa nação de escravos? Porque foram eles capturados e levados para longe?

15 Vejo grandes exércitos marchando sobre Jerusalém, com rugidos poderosos, prontos para destruir e para deixar todas as outras cidades em ruínas, queimadas e desoladas. 16 Vejo os exércitos do Egito levantando-se contra Israel, avançando desde as suas cidades de Menfis e de Tafnes, para aniquilar inteiramente a glória de Israel. 17 E isto é consequência direta do facto de se terem rebelado contra o Senhor, vosso Deus, que queria guiar-vos no vosso caminho!

18 O que pensas tu ganhar indo ao Egito, para beber da água do Nilo? O que pensas tu ganhar indo à Assíria, para beber água do Eufrates? 19 A vossa própria maldade vos castiga. Hão de ver que coisa má e amarga é rebelarem-se contra o Senhor, vosso Deus, sem temor algum de o esquecerem, diz Deus, o Senhor dos exércitos. 20 Há já muito tempo, tu quebraste o meu jugo e desprendeste as cadeias que te prendiam, mas não quiseste obedecer-me. No cimo de cada outeiro, debaixo de cada árvore frondosa te entregaste a algum culto de prostituição.

21 Quando vos plantei, escolhi cuidadosamente a minha videira, a melhor de todas, de uma semente absolutamente pura. Como foi que se tornaram uma planta degenerada, uma vinha estragada? 22 Não há sabão ou detergente que chegue para vos lavar. Vocês estão sujos com uma culpa que não sai assim. Vejo-a continuamente perante os meus olhos, diz o Senhor Deus. 23 Vocês dizem que não, que não é assim, que não têm adorado ídolos de Baal. Mas como é que podem afirmar uma coisa dessas? Vão ver, em cada vale da terra! Encarem bem os terríveis pecados que têm praticado. Vocês são como camelas ligeiras desviando-se do seu caminho! 24 São como uma jumenta selvagem sorvendo o ar no tempo do acasalamento. Quem poderá reter a tua lascívia? Qualquer macho que te queira nem precisa de procurar-te; tu logo apareces correndo para ele! 25 Porque não deixas de andar a correr assim atrás de outros deuses? Mas tu dizes: ‘Não percas tempo! Estou apaixonada por esses estrangeiros e já não posso deixar de os amar!’

26 Tal como um ladrão inveterado, a única coisa de que pode ter vergonha é ser apanhado. Reis, altas entidades, sacerdotes e profetas, são todos assim! 27 Chamam pai a uma coisa talhada em madeira e têm como mãe um ídolo esculpido em pedra! Mas o certo é que em tempos de aflição sabem clamar a mim que os salve. 28 Porque não vão ter com essa espécie de deuses que vocês mesmo fizeram? Quando o perigo ameaça, deem-lhes ocasião para que se mostrem e vos salvem, se puderem! Até porque vocês têm tantos deuses quantas as cidades de Judá! 29 Não venham ter comigo, porque vocês são rebeldes, diz o Senhor. 30 Castiguei os teus filhos, mas isso de pouco lhes serviu. Continuam sem querer obedecer. Vocês mesmos têm morto os meus profetas, como os leões ao despedaçarem a presa.

31 Ó, meu povo, ouve a palavra do Senhor! Terei sido como um deserto para com Israel? Ter-lhe-ei proporcionado uma vida como numa terra de trevas e de maldade? Então porque diz o meu povo: ‘Até que enfim estamos livres de Deus! Já não temos mais nada a ver com ele!’? Como podem desligar-se de Deus assim dessa maneira? 32 Poderá uma rapariga esquecer os seus enfeites? Qual é a noiva que os põe de lado e não se lembra mais do seu vestido de noiva? Pois é o que tem acontecido há anos com o meu povo que se tem esquecido de mim!

33 O que tu não inventas para cativares os teus amantes! A meretriz mais experimentada teria muito a aprender contigo! 34 As tuas roupas estão manchadas com o sangue dos inocentes e dos pobres. Assassinas descaradamente, sem causa alguma, e ainda por cima dizes: 35 ‘Não fiz nada que justifique a cólera de Deus! Estou certo de que ele não está zangado!’ Hei de castigar-te severamente, porque dizes: ‘Não pequei!’

36 Andas de um lado para o outro, de um aliado saltas para outro, procurando apoio, mas isso não servirá de nada. Os teus novos amigos no Egito hão de esquecer-te, tal como já aconteceu com a Assíria. 37 Serás deixado no desespero, cobrindo a cara com as mãos, porque o Senhor rejeita esses em quem tu confias. Não terás sucesso, a despeito da sua ajuda.

1 Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2 Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.*2.2 thee: or, for thy sake 3 Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD. 4 Hear ye the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel:

5 Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain? 6 Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt? 7 And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.*2.7 a plentiful…: or, the land of Carmel 8 The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.

9 Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the LORD, and with your children’s children will I plead. 10 For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.*2.10 over: or, over to 11 Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit. 12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD. 13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

14 Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he spoiled?*2.14 spoiled: Heb. become a spoil? 15 The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant.*2.15 yelled: Heb. gave out their voice 16 Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head.*2.16 have…: or, feed on thy crown 17 Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way? 18 And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river? 19 Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

29 Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the LORD. 30 In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

31 O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?*2.31 We are…: Heb. We have dominion 32 Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number. 33 Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways. 34 Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.*2.34 secret…: Heb. digging 35 Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned. 36 Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria. 37 Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.
