1 Esta mensagem para o povo de Judá veio da parte do Senhor a Jeremias, durante o quarto ano do reinado de Joaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá. Este foi o ano em que Nabucodonozor, rei da Babilónia, começou a reinar.

2 E Jeremias foi dizer aos habitantes de Judá e de Jerusalém: 3 Há 23 anos, desde o ano treze do reinado de Josias, filho de Amom, rei de Judá, até agora, que o Senhor me tem mandado as suas mensagens, e sempre as comuniquei fielmente sem, contudo, me quererem ouvir. 4 Persistentemente o Senhor vos tem enviado os seus profetas e, no entanto, têm-se recusado a dar-lhes ouvidos. 5 A sua mensagem foi sempre: "Deixem esse caminho de maldade por onde vão e essas ações más que andam a fazer! Porque só assim poderão continuar a viver aqui nesta terra que o Senhor deu a vocês e aos vossos pais para sempre. 6 Não provoquem a minha ira adorando ídolos feitos com as vossas próprias mãos e assim não vos castigarei! 7 No entanto, recusaram-se a ouvir-me; continuaram no mesmo e inflamaram a minha cólera com os vossos ídolos. Foi dessa forma que trouxeram sobre vocês todo o mal que vos tem acontecido."

8 Agora o Senhor dos exércitos diz: "Porque não quiseram ouvir-me, 9 farei com que se juntem todos os exércitos do norte, sob o comando de Nabucodonozor, rei da Babilónia, do qual fiz meu instrumento, e os trarei contra esta terra e este povo, e também contra as nações tuas vizinhas. Destruir-te-ei inteiramente e farei de ti um espanto, um provérbio de desprezo para sempre. 10 Retirar-te-ei a alegria, os motivos de prazer, as festas, a euforia das bodas; os teus negócios falirão e sobre todas as tuas habitações cairá uma escuridão silenciosa. 11 A terra inteira se tornará numa vasta desolação e ficará vazia; todo o mundo ficará abismado perante a calamidade que te sobreveio. Israel e os seus vizinhos servirão o rei da Babilónia durante 70 anos.

12 Depois de terminar esse tempo de escravidão, castigarei então o rei da Babilónia e o seu povo, por causa dos seus pecados; farei da terra da Caldeia um ermo de ruínas para sempre. 13 Também trarei sobre eles todos os terrores que estão prometidos neste livro, todos os castigos anunciados por Jeremias contra as nações. 14 Porque muitas outras nações e grandes reis escravizarão, por sua vez, os caldeus, tal como estes fizeram com o meu povo; castigá-los-ei na mesma proporção do tratamento que lhes infligiram."

15 Disse-me o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: "Pega nesta taça que tenho aqui na mão, a transbordar com a minha ira, e dá a beber dela a todas as nações a que eu te mandar. 16 Beberão dessa taça, cambalearão e enlouquecerão, até morrerem com a violência da guerra que farei cair sobre eles."

17 Tomei a taça da mão do Senhor e dei-a a beber a todas as nações às quais Deus me tinha mandado. 18 Fui a Jerusalém e às cidades de Judá e os seus reis e nobres beberam da taça, de forma que desde esse dia até agora têm sido assoladas, odiadas e malditas, tal como se vê. 19 Fui ao Egito e o Faraó, os seus servidores, os nobres e o povo também beberam dessa taça terrível. 20 Também os estrangeiros imigrados que ali viviam dela beberam e o mesmo fizeram todos os reis da terra de Uz e todos os reis dos filisteus: os de Asquelom, Gaza e Ecrom, e o povo que ainda ficara em Asdode. 21 Castiguei da mesma forma as nações de Edom, de Moabe e de Amon, 22 assim como os reis de Tiro e de Sídon, e os das regiões do outro lado do mar; 23 Dedã, Tema, Buz e os povos pagãos que ali vivem; 24 e ainda os reis da Arábia e as tribos nómadas do deserto; 25 todos os reis de Zimri, do Elão e da Média; 26 tal como os das regiões do norte, de perto e de longe, uns após outros, todos os reis do mundo. Finalmente o rei da Babilónia*25.26 No texto hebraico, Chechac, ou seja, rei Chechac., ele próprio, bebeu desta taça da ira de Deus.

27 "Diz-lhes: O Senhor dos exércitos, o Deus de Israel, diz: Bebam desta taça da minha cólera, até se embebedarem e vomitarem, e caírem no chão para não mais se levantarem, porque vou enviar a espada sobre vocês. 28 E se recusarem aceitar a taça e beber, diz-lhes: O Senhor dos exércitos diz que terão de beber, queiram ou não! Não podem escapar a isso! 29 Já comecei a castigar o meu próprio povo e vocês haveriam de escapar? Não, vocês não poderão livrar-se do meu castigo! Mandarei vir a guerra sobre todos os povos da Terra, diz o Senhor dos exércitos!

30 Por isso, profetiza contra eles. Diz-lhes que o Senhor dos exércitos clama desde a sua habitação, desde o seu santo templo nos céus, contra todos os que vivem na Terra. Fá-lo-á com a exaltação de quem pisa uvas no lagar. 31 Essa voz de julgamento ecoará por toda a Terra, até aos seus confins, pois o Senhor tem um contencioso contra todos os povos, contra toda a humanidade. Quanto aos ímpios, ele os entregará à espada, diz o Senhor. 32 Será a matança de todos os ímpios. Vejam, declara o Senhor dos exércitos, a punição irá de nação em nação! Será como uma colossal tempestade de cólera que se levanta contra os mais longínquos cantos da Terra."

33 Nesse tempo, a Terra ficará cheia com todos aqueles que o Senhor fez morrer, dum extremo ao outro. E ninguém chorará por eles, nem juntarão os seus corpos para os enterrar; serão como esterco nos campos.

34 Chorem e lamentem-se, ó maus pastores! Que os chefes do rebanho se revolvam na cinza, porque o seu tempo chegou, a altura de serem mortos e aniquilados! Cairão como se fossem frágeis mulheres! 35 Não encontrarão lugar onde se possam esconder para escapar!

36 Ouçam os gritos frenéticos de desespero dos pastores e dos líderes, porque o Senhor lhes destruiu as pastagens. 37 Gente que vive neste momento em sossego será desarraigada pela violência da cólera do Senhor. 38 Ele deixou o seu covil como um leão feroz que vai atrás da presa; a sua terra foi devastada por batalhões bem armados e aguerridos, tudo por causa da tremenda cólera do Senhor.

1 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, that was the first year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; 2 The which Jeremiah the prophet spake unto all the people of Judah, and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, 3 From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, even unto this day, that is the three and twentieth year, the word of the LORD hath come unto me, and I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye have not hearkened. 4 And the LORD hath sent unto you all his servants the prophets, rising early and sending them; but ye have not hearkened, nor inclined your ear to hear. 5 They said, Turn ye again now every one from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the LORD hath given unto you and to your fathers for ever and ever: 6 And go not after other gods to serve them, and to worship them, and provoke me not to anger with the works of your hands; and I will do you no hurt. 7 Yet ye have not hearkened unto me, saith the LORD; that ye might provoke me to anger with the works of your hands to your own hurt.

8 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Because ye have not heard my words, 9 Behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith the LORD, and Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabitants thereof, and against all these nations round about, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and an hissing, and perpetual desolations. 10 Moreover I will take from them the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the candle.*25.10 I will…: Heb. 12 And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the LORD, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations.*25.12 punish: Heb. visit upon 13 And I will bring upon that land all my words which I have pronounced against it, even all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah hath prophesied against all the nations. 14 For many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of them also: and I will recompense them according to their deeds, and according to the works of their own hands.

15 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it. 16 And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them. 17 Then took I the cup at the LORD’s hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the LORD had sent me: 18 To wit, Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and the kings thereof, and the princes thereof, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, an hissing, and a curse; as it is this day; 19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people; 20 And all the mingled people, and all the kings of the land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, and Azzah, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod, 21 Edom, and Moab, and the children of Ammon, 22 And all the kings of Tyrus, and all the kings of Zidon, and the kings of the isles which are beyond the sea,*25.22 isles: or, region by the sea side 23 Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all that are in the utmost corners,*25.23 that…: Heb. cut off into corners, or, having the corners of the hair polled 24 And all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mingled people that dwell in the desert, 25 And all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of the Medes, 26 And all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the world, which are upon the face of the earth: and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them. 27 Therefore thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Drink ye, and be drunken, and spue, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you. 28 And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink. 29 For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts.*25.29 which…: Heb. upon which my name is called

30 Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words, and say unto them, The LORD shall roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation; he shall mightily roar upon his habitation; he shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth. 31 A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the LORD hath a controversy with the nations, he will plead with all flesh; he will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the LORD. 32 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth. 33 And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground.

34 Howl, ye shepherds, and cry; and wallow yourselves in the ashes, ye principal of the flock: for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are accomplished; and ye shall fall like a pleasant vessel.*25.34 the days…: Heb. your days for slaughter*25.34 a pleasant…: Heb. a vessel of desire 35 And the shepherds shall have no way to flee, nor the principal of the flock to escape.*25.35 the shepherds…: Heb. flight shall perish from the shepherds, and escaping from, etc 36 A voice of the cry of the shepherds, and an howling of the principal of the flock, shall be heard: for the LORD hath spoiled their pasture. 37 And the peaceable habitations are cut down because of the fierce anger of the LORD. 38 He hath forsaken his covert, as the lion: for their land is desolate because of the fierceness of the oppressor, and because of his fierce anger.*25.38 desolate: Heb. a desolation
