1 "Ai dos pastores que destroem e dispersam as ovelhas das minhas pastagens!", diz o Senhor. 2 Portanto, assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: "Enviarei calamidades sobre os chefes do meu povo, os pastores das minhas ovelhas, porque destruíram e dispersaram aquelas de quem deveriam ter cuidado atentamente. Em lugar de levarem o rebanho para sítios seguros, deixaram-no só e conduziram-no à destruição. Agora derramarei juízos sobre vocês pelo mal que lhe fizeram. 3 E tornarei a juntar o resto do meu rebanho, de todas as partes para onde os mandei, e o trarei para o seu próprio curral; será frutífero e crescerá. 4 Nomearei pastores responsáveis que cuidem das minhas ovelhas e não precisarão mais de viver em temores; nenhuma delas jamais faltará, quando se tomar a conta.

5 Porque vêm dias, diz o Senhor, em que porei um Renovo justo sobre o trono de David. Será um rei que governará com sabedoria e justiça, e que fará prevalecer a retidão sobre toda a Terra. 6 E este será o seu nome: O Senhor é a nossa Justiça. Nesse tempo, Judá será salva e Israel viverá em paz.

7 O povo não dirá mais, ao querer garantir qualquer coisa: ‘Tão certo como vive o Senhor, que libertou o povo de Israel da terra do Egito!’ 8 Mas dirão: ‘Tão certo como vive o Senhor que trouxe os israelitas para a sua terra, trazendo-os dos países para onde os tinha exilado!’ "

9 O meu coração está amachucado por causa dos falsos profetas. O meu coração está despedaçado e tremo todo; ando cambaleando como se estivesse embriagado, por causa do Senhor e das suas santas palavras. 10 Porque a terra está cheia de adultérios e a maldição de Deus está sobre ela. A própria terra se lamenta e as pastagens estão secas, porque os profetas praticam o mal e usam o seu prestígio para coisas injustas.

11 "Aliás, tanto os sacerdotes como os profetas andam longe de Deus; são gente ruim. Eu próprio vi os seus atos vis, praticados aqui mesmo no meu próprio templo, diz o Senhor. 12 Por isso, o caminho que trilham se tornará escorregadio e cheio de trevas; serão empurrados e cairão. Trarei sobre eles o mal e terei cuidado em que, quando chegar o tempo, paguem completamente o castigo de todos os seus pecados.

13 Certamente tive conhecimento da incrível maldade dos profetas de Samaria, pois chegaram a profetizar em nome de Baal e levaram o meu povo de Israel a pecar. 14 No entanto, os profetas de Jerusalém são ainda piores! As coisas que fazem são horríveis; cometem adultério e comportam-se com desonestidade. Encorajam e elogiam até os que agem iniquamente, em vez de se converterem dos seus pecados. Esta gente é tão depravada como as gentes de Sodoma e de Gomorra."

15 Por isso, eis o que o Senhor dos exércitos diz contra os profetas: "Alimentá-los-ei com fel e dar-lhes-ei veneno a beber, pois é por sua causa que a terra se está a encher de maldade. 16 Este é pois o meu aviso ao povo, diz o Senhor dos exércitos: Não ouçam esses falsos profetas, quando vos profetizarem, enchendo-vos com falsas esperanças. Eles dizem o que pensam, mas nunca, de maneira nenhuma, o que eu quero! 17 Continuam a dizer a estes rebeldes que me desprezam: ‘Não se preocupem! Vai tudo bem!’ E aos que vivem como muito bem lhes agrada: ‘O Senhor já disse que vocês terão paz!’

18 Mas podem, ao menos, nomear um só desses profetas que viva bastante perto do Senhor para ouvir a sua palavra? 19 Reparem bem, o Senhor há de enviar uma tremenda tempestade que levará para longe esta gente perversa. A grande ira do Senhor não esmorecerá antes de ter executado o castigo que decretou contra eles. 20 Quando chegarem, por fim, esses tempos, quando Jerusalém tiver caído, hão de ver como as minhas palavras se realizarão.

21 Não chamei nenhum desses profetas e, contudo, garantem que falam em meu nome; não lhes dei nenhuma mensagem a transmitir e, apesar disso, dizem que as palavras que proferem são as minhas. 22 Se assim fosse, tentariam converter o meu povo dos seus caminhos maus.

23 Serei eu um Deus que só pode estar num único lugar e que não tem possibilidade de ver tudo o que eles fazem? 24 Poderia alguém esconder-se de mim? Não estou eu em toda a parte, nos céus e na Terra?

25 Dizem eles: ‘Ouçam! Ouçam o sonho que tive da parte de Deus a noite passada!’ E então começam a dizer mentiras em meu nome. 26 Até quando é que isto continuará assim? Se são profetas, são uma fraude, pois inventam tudo o que dizem. 27 Ao contarem todos esses falsos sonhos, tentam levar o meu povo a esquecer-me, tal como fizeram os seus pais que me trocaram pelos ídolos de Baal. 28 Que esses falsos profetas contem então os seus sonhos, mas que os meus mensageiros proclamem fielmente a minha palavra! Há uma grande diferença entre a palha e o trigo!" 29 O Senhor diz: "Não é a minha palavra como o fogo e como um martelo que esmiuça uma rocha em pedaços?

30 Dessa forma, estarei eu contra esses profetas que imitam as pregações uns dos outros; 31 esses profetas que dizem, com uma voz adocicada: ‘Esta mensagem vem do Senhor!’ 32 Os seus sonhos fabricados são mentiras petulantes que só servem para levar o meu povo a pecar. Não fui eu quem os nomeou e eles não têm nenhuma mensagem da minha parte para transmitir ao povo, diz o Senhor.

33 Quando alguém do povo, ou um dos profetas ou algum sacerdote te perguntar: ‘Então, Jeremias, qual é o encargo que tens da parte do Senhor?’, deverás responder-lhe: ‘Encargo? O encargo é que o Senhor vos expulsa!’

34 E quanto a esses falsos profetas e sacerdotes e ao povo que também se mete contigo, dizendo-te: ‘Este é o encargo que tenho da parte do Senhor’, castigá-los-ei, sem falhar, por falarem dessa maneira. 35 Podem perguntar uns aos outros: ‘Qual é a mensagem do Senhor? Que tem ele a dizer-nos?’ 36 Mas deixem de falar nestes termos: ‘Este é o encargo que tenho da parte do Senhor’, porque as palavras que cada um proferir serão para essa pessoa um encargo. Vocês inventam mensagens e alteram as palavras do Deus vivo, do Senhor dos exércitos, o nosso Deus. 37 Vocês podem, com seriedade, perguntar a Jeremias: ‘Qual é a mensagem do Senhor? Que te disse ele?’ 38 Mas se lhe perguntarem ‘Qual é encargo que recebeste da parte do Senhor?’, assim declara o Senhor: vocês dizem: ‘Este é o encargo que tenho da parte do Senhor’, quando eu vos adverti que não dissessem isso. 39 Por isso lançar-vos-ei para longe da minha presença, a vocês e esta cidade que vos dei e aos vossos pais. 40 Trarei um opróbrio infinito sobre vocês, o vosso nome será símbolo de coisa infame."

1 Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the LORD. 2 Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the LORD. 3 And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase. 4 And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking, saith the LORD.

5 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. 6 In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.*23.6 THE LORD…: Heb. Jehovah-tsidkenu 7 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that they shall no more say, The LORD liveth, which brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt; 8 But, The LORD liveth, which brought up and which led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries whither I had driven them; and they shall dwell in their own land.

9 Mine heart within me is broken because of the prophets; all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine hath overcome, because of the LORD, and because of the words of his holiness. 10 For the land is full of adulterers; for because of swearing the land mourneth; the pleasant places of the wilderness are dried up, and their course is evil, and their force is not right.*23.10 swearing: or, cursing*23.10 course: or, violence 11 For both prophet and priest are profane; yea, in my house have I found their wickedness, saith the LORD. 12 Wherefore their way shall be unto them as slippery ways in the darkness: they shall be driven on, and fall therein: for I will bring evil upon them, even the year of their visitation, saith the LORD. 13 And I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria; they prophesied in Baal, and caused my people Israel to err.*23.13 folly: or, an absurd thing: Heb. unsavoury 14 I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.*23.14 an…: or, filthiness 15 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts concerning the prophets; Behold, I will feed them with wormwood, and make them drink the water of gall: for from the prophets of Jerusalem is profaneness gone forth into all the land.*23.15 profaneness: or, hypocrisy 16 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD. 17 They say still unto them that despise me, The LORD hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you.*23.17 imagination: or, stubbornness 18 For who hath stood in the counsel of the LORD, and hath perceived and heard his word? who hath marked his word, and heard it?*23.18 counsel: or, secret 19 Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked. 20 The anger of the LORD shall not return, until he have executed, and till he have performed the thoughts of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly. 21 I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. 22 But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings. 23 Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off? 24 Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD. 25 I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed. 26 How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart; 27 Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal. 28 The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the LORD.*23.28 that hath a dream: Heb. with whom is, etc 29 Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? 30 Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that steal my words every one from his neighbour. 31 Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that use their tongues, and say, He saith.*23.31 that…: or, that smooth their tongues 32 Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD.

33 And when this people, or the prophet, or a priest, shall ask thee, saying, What is the burden of the LORD? thou shalt then say unto them, What burden? I will even forsake you, saith the LORD. 34 And as for the prophet, and the priest, and the people, that shall say, The burden of the LORD, I will even punish that man and his house.*23.34 punish: Heb. visit upon 35 Thus shall ye say every one to his neighbour, and every one to his brother, What hath the LORD answered? and, What hath the LORD spoken? 36 And the burden of the LORD shall ye mention no more: for every man’s word shall be his burden; for ye have perverted the words of the living God, of the LORD of hosts our God. 37 Thus shalt thou say to the prophet, What hath the LORD answered thee? and, What hath the LORD spoken? 38 But since ye say, The burden of the LORD; therefore thus saith the LORD; Because ye say this word, The burden of the LORD, and I have sent unto you, saying, Ye shall not say, The burden of the LORD; 39 Therefore, behold, I, even I, will utterly forget you, and I will forsake you, and the city that I gave you and your fathers, and cast you out of my presence: 40 And I will bring an everlasting reproach upon you, and a perpetual shame, which shall not be forgotten.
