1 Então, diz o Senhor, o inimigo quebrará os selos dos túmulos dos reis de Judá, dos governantes, dos profetas e do povo; pegará nos seus ossos e os espalhará pelo chão. 2 Esses ossos não tornarão a ser apanhados e sepultados, mas antes espalhados como estrume pelo chão, à luz do Sol, sob a claridade da Lua e das estrelas, esses que eram os deuses deste povo e a quem amaram e prestaram culto. 3 E a gente desta nação maligna que for deixada ainda com vida desejará muito mais morrer do que ir viver para onde os espalharei, diz o Senhor dos exércitos.

4 Mais uma vez dá-lhes esta mensagem do Senhor. Quando uma pessoa cai, procura levantar-se; se encetou caminho por uma estrada errada e verifica que se enganou, voltará para trás, até ao cruzamento onde se enganou na direção. 5 Mas esta gente continua no seu trilho errado, mesmo tendo-os eu avisado. 6 Ouço a sua conversa e que é que ouço? Ouvirei eu alguém triste por ter pecado? Haverá alguém a dizer: ‘Que coisa terrível que eu fiz!’? Não! Todos eles descem como loucos pelo caminho do pecado, tão velozes como cavalos correndo para a batalha! 7 Até a cegonha conhece o tempo em que deve emigrar e o mesmo acontece com outras aves, como a rola, o grou e a andorinha. Todas sabem regressar na altura que Deus lhes indica, em cada ano, mas isso não é para o meu povo! Não aceitam as leis do Senhor.

8 Como podem dizer: ‘Nós compreendemos a sua Lei’, quando os vossos escribas a distorceram de forma a poder significar aquilo que eu nunca disse? 9 Essas pessoas tão sábias ficarão cobertas de vergonha com o exílio que o vosso pecado vos trouxer, porque rejeitaram a palavra do Senhor. Veremos se nessa altura terão assim tanta sabedoria! 10 Por isso, darei as suas mulheres e as suas quintas a outros, porque todos eles, grandes e pequenos, profetas e sacerdotes têm atualmente uma só coisa em mente, apossar-se do que não é deles. 11 Tratam as feridas do meu povo com remédios perfeitamente ineficazes, pois lhe asseguram que tudo vai bem, quando não é nada assim. 12 Serão eles capazes de ter vergonha de adorar outros deuses? Absolutamente! Nem um bocadinho sequer! Eles nem são capazes de corar! É por isso que hei de fazer que morram entre os vencidos. 13 Castigá-los-ei com a morte. Os seus figos e as suas uvas desaparecerão; as suas árvores de fruto secarão; desaparecerão em breve todas as boas coisas que preparei para eles."

14 Então o povo dirá: "Porque haveremos então de esperar aqui para morrer? Venham, vamos para as cidades fortificadas e morreremos lá! Porque o Senhor, nosso Deus, decretou a nossa condenação e dá-nos a beber uma taça de veneno, por causa dos nossos pecados. 15 Esperávamos a paz e não foi paz que tivemos! Contávamos com o bem-estar e chega-nos o terror!"

16 "O ruído da guerra já soa na fronteira do norte. Toda a terra treme à aproximação daquele tremendo exército, porque o inimigo aproxima-se e vai devorando a terra e tudo o que nela encontra, tanto as povoações como os seus habitantes. 17 Porque eu enviarei essas tropas adversárias para o vosso meio como serpentes envenenadas que ninguém poderá encantar. Façam o que fizerem, elas vos morderão e vocês hão de morrer", diz o Senhor.

18 A minha mágoa não tem consolação; o meu coração será destruído. 19 Ouçam o choro do meu povo por toda a terra.

"Não está o Senhor em Sião?", perguntam. "Esta terra já não tem o seu Rei?"

E o Senhor responde-lhes: "Oh! Porque é que eles me provocaram com os seus ídolos esculpidos, com aqueles ritos perversos e extravagantes?"

20 "Acabou a sega; passou o verão e nós não estamos salvos!"

21 Choro pela ferida do meu povo. Estou espantado, sem fala, mudo de angústia. 22 Já não há remédio em Gileade? Não haverá ali um médico? Porque é que não houve cura para o meu povo?

1 At that time, saith the LORD, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves: 2 And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth. 3 And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places whither I have driven them, saith the LORD of hosts.

4 Moreover thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD; Shall they fall, and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return? 5 Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return. 6 I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle. 7 Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD. 8 How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us?
