1,2 Quando os reis das áreas circunvizinhas ouviram o que acontecera a Jericó, rapidamente reuniram os exércitos para lutarem em defesa das suas vidas contra Josué e os israelitas. Os povos que esses reis governavam a ocidente do Jordão, ao longo da planície costeira junto ao mar Mediterrâneo até ao norte, às montanhas do Líbano, eram os seguintes: hititas, amorreus, cananeus, perizeus, heveus e jebuseus.

3 Contudo, quando o povo de Gibeão soube o que acontecera a Jericó e a Ai, 4,5 resolveram usar dum ardil para salvarem as suas vidas. Enviaram embaixadores a Josué, vestidos com roupas usadas e sujas, como se viessem duma longa viagem, com sapatos muito gastos e remendados, velhos sacos sobre os jumentos, odres de vinho velhos e rotos e pão seco e bolorento. 6 Quando chegaram ao acampamento de Israel em Gilgal, disseram a Josué e às gentes de Israel: "Viemos duma terra distante pedir-vos que façam connosco um tratado de paz."

7 Os israelitas responderam a esses heveus: "E como é que nós sabemos que vocês não são gente daqui de perto? Pois se assim fosse não faríamos convosco nenhum tratado."

8 "Seremos vossos escravos", replicaram. "Mas quem são vocês, afinal? Donde é que vêm?", perguntou-lhes Josué.

9 "Somos duma terra muito longe; temos ouvido falar do poder do Senhor, vosso Deus, e de tudo o que já fez no Egito; 10 assim como daquilo que fizeram aos dois reis amorreus, a Siom rei de Hesbom e a Ogue rei de Basã, que reinava em Astarote. 11 Por isso, os nossos anciãos e o nosso povo nos deram ordens: ‘Preparem-se para uma longa viagem; vão ter com o povo de Israel e declarem-lhes, em nosso nome, que a nossa nação se submeterá a eles como escravos e façam paz com eles.’ 12 Este pão que aqui está vinha ainda quente do forno, quando deixámos a terra, e agora, como estão a ver, está seco e cheio de bolor; 13 estes odres eram novinhos, e aqui estão eles já velhos e meio rotos; a roupa e o calçado que trazemos gastou-se durante a longa viagem que tivemos de fazer."

14 Josué e os outros líderes acabaram por acreditar neles, sem se terem incomodado de pedir conselho ao Senhor. 15 Foram para a frente com esse tratado de paz e os líderes de Israel ratificaram-no com juramento.

16 Três dias mais tarde os factos começaram a ser conhecidos e a verdade a vir ao de cima; essa gente não era mais do que simples vizinhos. 17 O exército de Israel pôs-se logo em campo para averiguar os factos e alcançou as cidades deles em três dias. Os nomes dessas povoações eram Gibeão, Cafira, Beerote e Quiriate-Jearim. 18 No entanto, nenhuma dessas cidades foi atacada, devido ao tratado que os líderes de Israel tinham feito na presença do Senhor, o Deus de Israel. O povo de Israel ficou revoltado contra os seus chefes, por causa do engano em que caíram, assinando esse tratado de paz.

19 Contudo, os líderes responderam-lhes: "Jurámos perante o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, que não lhes tocaríamos e assim faremos. 20 Teremos de deixá-los com vida pois, se quebrarmos o juramento que fizemos, a ira de Deus cairá sobre nós."

21 E foi assim que eles se tornaram servos dos israelitas como rachadores de lenha e aguadeiros.

22 Josué entretanto tinha-os chamado e falou-lhes desta forma: "Porque é que nos enganaram dizendo-nos que vinham duma terra distante, quando afinal viviam mesmo aqui ao nosso lado? 23 Por isso, permanecerá sobre vós uma maldição. Desde agora e para sempre deverão ser nossos servos, servindo-nos como rachadores de lenha e como aguadeiros no serviço do santuário do meu Deus."

24 Eles responderam: "Fizemos isto porque nos disseram que o Senhor, vosso Deus, dera instruções a Moisés, o seu servo, para conquistar toda esta terra e destruir o povo que aqui vive. Por isso, tivemos medo que nos tirassem a vida. Essa foi a razão por que atuámos desta forma. 25 Estamos nas vossas mãos; façam connosco o que bem entenderem."

26 Josué não deixou que o povo os matasse. 27 Tornaram-se, efetivamente, rachadores de lenha e carregadores de água para o povo de Israel e para o altar do Senhor, onde quer que este fosse construído, porque o Senhor não tinha ainda dito onde haveria de ser erguido. Este acordo vigora ainda hoje, no tempo em que este texto está a ser escrito.

3 And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai, 4 They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up; 5 And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy. 6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us. 7 And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you? 8 And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye? 9 And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt, 10 And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth. 11 Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.*9.11 with you: Heb. in your hand 12 This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy: 13 And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey. 14 And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.*9.14 the men…: or, they received the men by reason of their victuals

15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.

16 And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them. 17 And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim. 18 And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes. 19 But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them. 20 This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them. 21 And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.

22 And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us? 23 Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.*9.23 none…: Heb. not be cut off from you 24 And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing. 25 And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do. 26 And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not. 27 And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.*9.27 made: Heb. gave, or, delivered to be
