15 As escamas que possui,

sobrepostas como escudo, são o seu orgulho;

16 são como uma proteção compacta,

de tal forma que nem o ar passa entre elas,

17 e assim é impossível separá-las.

18 Quando ele espirra, a luz brilha;

os seus olhos são como as pálpebras da alva.

19 Da sua boca saem chamas,

saltam dela fagulhas de fogo que estalam.

20 O fumo brota das suas narinas,

até parece uma panela a ferver com água,

ou uma caldeira aquecida.

21 A sua respiração bastaria para acender carvões;

jorram-lhe chamas da boca.

22 A força enorme que tem no pescoço

lança o terror por onde passa.

23 Tem uns músculos duros e firmes;

não se encontra nele carne flácida.

24 O seu coração é duro como uma rocha,

é como uma mó de moinho.

25 Quando se ergue, até os mais valentes têm medo

e ficam paralisados de terror.

26 Não há espada que o detenha, nem qualquer outra arma,

seja lança, dardo ou flecha.

27 Ferro, para ele, é como palha

e o bronze como madeira podre.

28 Setas não o fariam fugir;

pedras de fundas valem contra ele tanto como estolho.

29 Uma tranca, que lhe seja atirada, é perfeitamente inútil;

fica-se a rir das lanças projetadas na sua direção.

30 O ventre, tem-no revestido de escamas;

espoja-se no chão duro como sobre relva!

31 Quando se desloca, deixa atrás de si um rasto de espuma;

agita violentamente os abismos dos oceanos.

32 Deixa atrás de si um sulco brilhante;

poderia pensar-se que o mar gelou!

33 Não há nada mais tremendo, sobre a face da Terra,

que se lhe possa comparar.

34 De todos os animais, é o mais altivo;

é o rei sobre todos os arrogantes."
