1 Aproximava-se já a celebração da Páscoa, a festa judaica durante a qual só se comia pão feito sem fermento. 2 Os principais sacerdotes e especialistas na Lei tramavam ativamente o assassínio de Jesus, pensando na maneira de o matar sem provocar tumulto, perigo que muito receavam.

3 Então Satanás entrou em Judas, o chamado Iscariotes, um dos doze discípulos, 4 o qual foi ter com os principais sacerdotes e com os capitães da guarda do templo, a fim de combinar a melhor maneira de lhes entregar Jesus. 5 Eles ficaram muito satisfeitos ao saberem que Judas estava pronto a auxiliá-los e prometeram-lhe uma recompensa. 6 Assim, começou a aguardar qualquer oportunidade para lhes entregar Jesus sem dar nas vistas.

7 Ao chegar o dia da celebração dos pães sem fermento, em que se matava o cordeiro da Páscoa, 8 Jesus enviou Pedro e João à frente para que arranjassem um lugar onde preparar a sua refeição da Páscoa.

9 "Onde queres que a preparemos?", perguntaram.

10 "Logo que entrarem na cidade encontrarão um homem transportando um cântaro de água. Sigam-no até à casa onde entrar 11 e digam ao dono da casa: ‘O Mestre pergunta: "Onde fica a sala onde irei comer a refeição da Páscoa com os meus discípulos?" ’ 12 Ele vos levará ao andar de cima, a uma sala grande, toda arranjada. É ali que devem preparar a ceia." 13 Eles partiram e, tendo encontrado tudo como Jesus tinha dito, prepararam a ceia da Páscoa.

14 Então chegou Jesus com os discípulos e, no momento devido, todos se sentaram à mesa. 15 Jesus disse: "Desejei muito comer esta Páscoa convosco antes de começar o meu sofrimento. 16 Porque vos digo que não comerei outra vez assim, na vossa companhia, senão quando o que esta refeição representa se realizar no reino de Deus."

17 Pegou então num cálice de vinho e, depois de ter dado graças, disse: "Tomem e repartam entre vós, 18 porque só tornarei a beber vinho quando tiver chegado o reino de Deus."

19 Depois pegou no pão e, dando igualmente graças a Deus por ele, partiu-o e deu-o aos discípulos: "Este é o meu corpo que é dado em vosso favor. Façam isto em memória de mim." 20 Depois da ceia serviu-lhes de novo o cálice de vinho, e disse: "Este cálice é a nova aliança, selada com o meu sangue que é derramado em vosso favor.

21 Mas aqui sentado comigo a esta mesa está também quem me vai trair. 22 O Filho do Homem tem de morrer, porque isso faz parte do plano de Deus. Mas ai do homem que me vai trair!"

23 Os discípulos puseram-se a perguntar entre si quem, de entre eles, seria capaz de fazer semelhante coisa.

24 Depois começaram também a discutir qual deles seria o mais importante. 25 Jesus disse-lhes: "Os reis entre os gentios dominam sobre eles e aos que exercem autoridade sobre eles chamam-lhes benfeitores! 26 No vosso meio, porém, não seja assim. O mais velho no vosso meio seja como o mais novo e o soberano será como aquele que serve. 27 O senhor senta-se à mesa e é servido pelos criados. Mas aqui, não! Porque sou eu quem vos serve. 28 Porque vocês têm continuado comigo nestes tempos de aflição; 29 e como o meu Pai me deu o reino, 30 eu concedo-vos o direito de comer e beber à minha mesa nesse reino. E sentar-se-ão em tronos para julgar as doze tribos de Israel.

31 Simão, Simão, Satanás pediu para vos peneirar a todos como o trigo. 32 Mas eu intercedi por ti para que a tua fé não enfraqueça. Assim, quando te tiveres voltado para mim, fortalece os teus irmãos."

33 Simão disse: "Senhor, estou pronto até a ir para a prisão e a morrer contigo!"

34 Jesus respondeu: "Pedro, deixa-me dizer-te uma coisa: Até o galo cantar, esta madrugada, três vezes dirás que não me conheces!"

35 Então Jesus perguntou-lhes: "Quando vos enviei a pregar as boas novas e não tinham dinheiro, nem bagagem, nem vestuário de muda, como é que se governaram?" Responderam: "Bem. Nada nos faltou!"

36 "Mas agora", Jesus disse, "se tiverem um saco ou um bolsa com dinheiro, levem-nos! E se não possuírem uma espada, vendam a roupa e comprem uma! 37 Porque chegou a altura de se cumprir isto que está escrito a meu respeito: ‘Ele foi contado entre os transgressores.’*22.37 Is 53.12. Sim, o que se escreveu acerca de mim se cumprirá."

38 "Mestre, temos aqui duas espadas!" Jesus retorquiu: "Basta!"

39 Então, acompanhado dos discípulos, deixou aquela sala e foi, como de costume, para o monte das Oliveiras. 40 Ali disse-lhes: "Orem para não serem vencidos pela tentação!"

41 Afastou-se à distância de cerca de um tiro de pedra e, ajoelhando-se, orou assim: 42 "Pai, se quiseres, peço-te que leves de mim este cálice. Mas que se cumpra a tua vontade e não a minha." 43 Então apareceu um anjo vindo do céu que o confortava. 44 Porque estava em tal agonia de espírito que o seu suor era de sangue, caindo em gotas no chão, enquanto orava com fervor cada vez maior. 45 Por fim, tornou a levantar-se e voltou para junto dos discípulos, encontrando-os a dormir, exaustos de tristeza. 46 "Estão a dormir!", exclamou. "Levantem-se! Orem para não serem vencidos pela tentação!"

47 No próprio momento em que dizia isto, acercou-se uma multidão conduzida por Judas, um dos doze, o qual foi direito a Jesus para o beijar, numa saudação amistosa. 48 Jesus disse-lhe: "Judas, com um beijo trais o Filho do Homem?"

49 Quando os outros discípulos viram o que ia acontecer, exclamaram: "Mestre, queres que lutemos? Temos as espadas!" 50 E um deles chegou a desferir um golpe contra um servo do sumo sacerdote, cortando-lhe a orelha direita.

51 Mas Jesus respondeu: "Não resistam." E, tocando no sítio da orelha do homem, restituiu-lha. 52 Então, dirigindo-se aos principais sacerdotes, aos capitães da guarda do templo e aos anciãos que conduziam a multidão, Jesus perguntou: "Sou algum assaltante perigoso para que venham com espadas e paus? 53 Todos os dias estava convosco a ensinar no templo e não me prenderam. Mas este momento é vosso; é a hora em que domina o poder das trevas."

54 Agarraram-no e levaram-no à residência do sumo sacerdote. Pedro seguia-o à distância. 55 Acenderam uma fogueira no pátio e as pessoas sentaram-se em volta para se aquecerem. Pedro juntou-se a eles.

56 Reparando na sua presença, uma criada pôs-se a olhá-lo e disse: "Esse estava com Jesus!"

57 Pedro negou: "Mulher, nem sequer o conheço!"

58 Dali a pouco, mais alguém olhou para ele e exclamou: "Também tu deves ser um dos tais!" Pedro respondeu: "Não, não sou!"

59 Decorrida cerca de uma hora, ainda outra pessoa afirmou abertamente: "Sei que este é um dos discípulos de Jesus, até porque ambos são da Galileia."

60 Mas Pedro disse: "Homem, não sei o que estás para aí a dizer." E enquanto pronunciava estas palavras, cantou um galo. 61 Naquele instante, Jesus voltou-se e olhou para Pedro. Então lembrou-se do que lhe dissera: "Hoje, antes que o galo cante, negar-me-ás três vezes." 62 E saindo dali chorou amargamente.

63 Os guardas que estavam a tomar conta de Jesus começaram a fazer pouco dele. 64 Tapando-lhe os olhos, batiam-lhe e davam-lhe socos, perguntando-lhe: "Profetiza-nos quem foi que te bateu agora?" 65 E insultavam-no de muitas outras maneiras.

66 Ao romper do dia, reuniu-se o conselho dos anciãos do povo, os principais sacerdotes e os especialistas na Lei. Jesus foi conduzido perante o conselho dos anciãos 67 e intimado a responder. "Diz lá, tu és o Cristo?" Ele respondeu: "Se o disser, não acreditarão em mim 68 nem me deixarão defender-me. 69 Mas em breve o Filho do Homem estará sentado à direita de Deus Todo-Poderoso."

70 Logo todos gritaram: "Afirmas, então, que és o Filho de Deus?" E Jesus respondeu: "Estão certos em dizer que sou!"

71 "Que necessidade temos nós de outras testemunhas?", perguntaram. "Nós próprios ouvimos o que ele disse."

1 Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover. 2 And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.

3 Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. 4 And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. 5 And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. 6 And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.

7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. 8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat. 9 And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare? 10 And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in. 11 And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? 12 And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. 13 And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. 14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. 15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: 16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. 17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: 18 For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.

19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

21 But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. 22 And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed! 23 And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.

24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. 25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. 26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. 27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. 28 Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations. 29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me; 30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: 32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. 33 And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death. 34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. 35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. 36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. 37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. 38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

39 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. 40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. 41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, 42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. 43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45 And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.

47 And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. 48 But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? 49 When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?

50 And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. 51 And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves? 53 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

54 Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest’s house. And Peter followed afar off. 55 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them. 56 But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him. 57 And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not. 58 And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not. 59 And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilæan. 60 And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. 61 And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. 62 And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.

63 And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him. 64 And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee? 65 And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.

66 And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying, 67 Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: 68 And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go. 69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. 70 Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am. 71 And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.
