1 Nesse mesmo dia, enquanto era lida a Lei de Moisés, o povo reparou numa passagem em que se dizia que os amonitas e os moabitas nunca deveriam ser aceites em atos de culto no templo, 2 porque esses povos não tinham tido uma atitude amigável para com o povo de Israel. Pelo contrário, eles compraram os serviços de Balaão para que os amaldiçoasse, ainda que Deus tivesse transformado essa maldição em bênção. 3 Quando essa proibição foi lida, todos os estrangeiros foram imediatamente retirados da assembleia.

4 Antes disso acontecer, o sacerdote Eliasibe, que fora designado encarregado das câmaras do templo, tinha transformado uma das câmaras num belo quarto, para receber Tobias, homem de quem era muito amigo. 5 Essa divisão tinha sido anteriormente reservada ao armazenamento de ofertas de cereais, incenso, recipientes, dízimos de cereais, vinho novo e azeite. Moisés decretara que essas ofertas pertencessem aos levitas, aos membros do coro e aos porteiros; as ofertas alçadas é que seriam para os sacerdotes.

6 Eu não estava em Jerusalém nessa ocasião, porque voltara à Babilónia no ano 32 do reinado de Artaxerxes, embora tivesse mais tarde pedido autorização para regressar novamente a Jerusalém. 7 Quando voltei a Jerusalém e soube dessa ação indigna de Eliasibe, de preparar um quarto de hóspede para Tobias no templo, fiquei bastante desagradado. 8 Fui lá e lancei fora todo o mobiliário e as coisas pertencentes a Tobias. 9 Depois mandei que fosse limpo e que pusessem de novo ali os recipientes do templo, as ofertas de cereais e o incenso.

10 Também soube que não se tinha dado aos levitas o que lhes era devido e que, por isso, tanto eles como os membros do coro tinham voltado às suas terras no campo. 11 Dirigi-me imediatamente aos chefes, perguntando-lhes porque tinham descurado o templo. Tornei a chamar os levitas e reorganizei as suas funções respetivas. 12 O povo de Judá tornou a trazer os seus dízimos dos cereais, do vinho novo e do azeite para os cofres do templo.

13 Coloquei o sacerdote Selemias, o escriba Zadoque e o levita Pedaías na administração desse armazenamento; também designei Hanã, filho de Zacur, filho de Matanias, como assistente. Estes homens tinham excelente reputação e o seu trabalho consistia em fazer uma distribuição equitativa dessas dádivas pelos seus irmãos levitas.

14 Meu Deus, lembra-te destas coisas boas que fiz! Não te esqueças de tudo o que fiz pela casa do meu Deus e pelo seu culto.

15 Um dia, em Judá, vi alguns homens a pisar uvas, e era sábado; também carregavam fardos que punham sobre jumentos, e carregamentos de vinho, uvas, figos e toda a espécie de mercadorias para levarem nesse mesmo dia para Jerusalém. Opus-me veementemente a tudo isso. 16 Havia até gente de Tiro que vinha vender peixe e outras coisas, aos sábados, ao povo de Jerusalém.

17 Então perguntei aos chefes de Judá: "Porque profanam o sábado? 18 Não bastou que os vossos antepassados fizessem essas coisas, tendo trazido sobre nós os males que nós conhecemos, e que a nossa cidade sofreu? Agora fazem cair maior ira de Deus sobre o povo de Israel, permitindo que profanem o sábado desta forma!"

19 A partir de então, ordenei que as portas da cidade se fechassem, assim que escuresse na sexta-feira à noite, e que só tornassem a ser abertas quando terminasse o período do sábado. Enviei mesmo alguns elementos da minha guarda para que nenhuma mercadoria fosse trazida durante o sábado. 20 Os mercadores e comerciantes ainda insistiram, ficando fora das muralhas uma ou duas vezes. 21 Mas eu falei-lhes severamente: "Que estão aí a fazer acampados à volta das muralhas? Se tornarem a voltar, mando-vos prender!" E foi a última vez que apareceram ao sábado. 22 Ordenei aos levitas que se purificassem cerimonialmente e que guardassem as portas, a fim de preservar a santidade do sábado.

Lembra-te, ó meu Deus, destes bons atos que pratiquei! Tem compaixão de mim segundo a tua grande bondade!

23 Pela mesma altura, constatei que alguns judeus se tinham casado com mulheres de Asdode, Amon e Moabe. 24 Muitos dos seus filhos falavam na língua dos asdoditas e não percebiam a língua de Judá. 25 Então adverti duramente esses pais e lembrei-lhes que estavam sob a maldição de Deus; tive mesmo de castigar alguns e de lhes puxar os cabelos; fi-los jurar que não deixariam casar mais filhos seus com gente que não fosse judia. 26 "Não foi esse exatamente o problema do rei Salomão?", perguntei. "Não houve soberano que se lhe comparasse; Deus amava-o e fê-lo rei sobre Israel, e mesmo assim ele deixou-se levar para a idolatria pelas mulheres estrangeiras. 27 Não pensem que vos deixaremos à vontade, a continuar a prevaricar num assunto tão importante como este!"

28 Um dos filhos de Jeoiada, filho de Eliasibe, o sumo sacerdote, era genro de Sanbalate, o horonita; por isso, excluí-o do templo.

29 Lembra-te deles, ó meu Deus, pois profanaram o sacerdócio, e a aliança que fizeste com sacerdotes e levitas!

30 Assim, suprimi a presença dos estrangeiros, verificando que cada um desempenharia com eficiência a sua função. 31 Forneciam madeira para o altar, no momento preciso, ocupavam-se dos sacrifícios e também das ofertas das primícias na época das colheitas.

Lembra-te de mim, ó meu Deus, de acordo com a tua misericórdia!

15 In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals. 16 There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. 17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day? 18 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath. 19 And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day. 20 So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice. 21 Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you.
