1 Toquem a trombeta de alarme! Eles aproximam-se! Como águia, o inimigo abate-se contra a casa do Senhor, porque quebrou a minha aliança e se revoltou contra a minha Lei.

2 E agora Israel clama junto de mim dizendo: ‘Socorre-nos, porque és o nosso Deus!’ 3 Mas é demasiado tarde! Israel rejeitou o bom momento com violência e agora serão os seus inimigos a persegui-lo. 4 Designaram os reis e os governantes que haveriam de ter, tudo sem o meu consentimento. Prestaram culto aos deuses que fabricaram com prata e ouro, para sua própria destruição.

5 Ó Samaria, rejeita em absoluto esse bezerro, esse ídolo, que fizeste! A minha ira acende-se contra ti. Quanto tempo haverá ainda até que se encontre no meio de ti um homem honesto? 6 Quando será que reconheces, enfim, que esse bezerro não passa de um objeto feito por mãos humanas? Não é Deus! Por essa razão, terá de ser feito em pedaços.

7 Semearam ventos, colherão tempestades. As suas searas não deram frutos nenhuns, não têm farinha; e se alguma se encontrar, serão os estrangeiros a comê-la.

8 Israel está destruído; jaz no meio das nações como uma bilha de barro feita em cacos. 9 É como um jumento solitário, selvagem, a vaguear. Os únicos amigos que tem são aqueles que compra e a Assíria é um deles. 10 Ainda que consiga comprar amigos de várias regiões, mandá-los-ei para o exílio. Logo começarão a definhar debaixo da opressão do rei dos príncipes, o rei poderoso!

11 Efraim construiu muitos altares, mas não são para me prestar culto! São altares de pecado! 12 Escrevi-lhes, muitas vezes, ensinamentos da minha Lei, mas eram para eles coisas estranhas. 13 Esse povo ama o ritual dos sacrifícios, mas para mim eles não têm significado! Farei um rol de todos os seus pecados e serão castigados; regressarão ao Egito.

14 Israel construiu grandes palácios; Judá edificou grandes defesas para as suas cidades, contudo, esqueceu-se do grande construtor. Eis a razão por que mandarei fogo sobre esses palácios e queimarei essas fortalezas."

5 Thy calf, O Samaria, hath cast thee off; mine anger is kindled against them: how long will it be ere they attain to innocency? 6 For from Israel was it also: the workman made it; therefore it is not God: but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces. 7 For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.*8.7 stalk: or, standing corn
